Āḷavakasutte pakāsayissāma, idha pana vassavuṭṭhiṃ sandhāya vuttaṃ. Saheyyun ti khameyyuṃ. Sesaṃ pākaṭam eva.
Ettha Dhaniyo, ye andhakamakasā sannipatitvā rudhire pivantā muhutten’eva gāvo anayabyasanaṃ pāpenti, tasmā vuṭṭhitamatte yeva te gopālakā paṃsunā ca sākhāhi ca mārenti, tesaṃ abhāvena gunnaṃ khemataṃ, kacche ruḷhatiṇacaraṇena addhānagamana-parissamābhāvaṃ vatvā khudākilamathābhāvañ ca dīpento, “yathā aññesaṃ gāvo andhakamakasasamphassehi dissamānā9 addhānagamanena kilantā khudāya milāyamānā10 ekavuṭṭhinipātam pi na saheyyuṃ, na me tathā gāvo, mayhaṃ pana gāvo vuttappakārābhāvā dvikkhattuṃ vā tikkhatuṃ vā vuṭṭhim pi saheyyun” ti dīpeti.
Tato Bhagavā, yasmā Dhaniyo antaradīpe vasanto bhayaṃ disvā, kullaṃ bandhitvā, Mahāmahiṃ taritvā, taṃ kacchaṃ āgamma “ahaṃ suṭṭhu āgato, nibbhaye va ṭhāne ṭhito” ti maññamāno evam āha, sabhaye eva ca so ṭhāne ṭhito, tasmā tassa āgamanaṭṭhānā attano āgamanaṭṭhānaṃ uttaritarañ ca paṇītatarañ ca vaṇṇento “baddhāsi bhisī” ti imaṃ gātham abhāsi, atthasabhāgaṃ no byañjanasabhāgaṃ.
Tattha bhisī ti pattharitvā puthulaṃ katvā baddhakullo vuccati loke, ariyassa pana dhammavinaye ariyamaggass’etaṃ adhivacanaṃ. Ariyamaggo hi
“Maggo pajjo patho pantho añjasaṃ vaṭumâyanaṃ
nāvā uttarasetu ca kullo ca bhisi saṅkamo (cūḷani. pārāyanatthutigāthāniddesa 101)
addhānaṃ pabhavo c’eva tattha tattha pakāsito”.
Imāya pi gāthāya Bhagavā purimanayen’eva taṃ ovadanto imaṃ atthaṃ āhā ti veditabbo: Dhaniya, tvaṃ kullaṃ bandhitvā, mahiṃ taritvā, imaṃ ṭhānam āgato, puna pi ca te kullo bandhitabbo eva bhavissati, nadī ca taritabbā, na c’etaṃ ṭhānaṃ khemaṃ, mayā pana ekacitte maggaṅgāni samodhānetvā ñāṇabandhanena baddhā ahosi bhisi, sā ca sattatiṃsa-bodhipakkhiyadhamma-paripuṇṇatāya ekarasa-bhāvūpagatattā11 aññamaññaṃ anativattanena puna bandhitabba-ppayojanābhāvena devamanussesu kenaci mocetuṃ asakkuṇeyyatāya ca susaṅkhatā.
Tāya c’amhi tiṇṇo, pubbe patthitaṃ tīrappadesaṃ gato, gacchanto pi ca na sotāpannādayo viya kañcid eva padesaṃ gato, atha kho pāragato sabbāsavakkhayaṃ sabbadhammapāraṃ paramaṃ khemaṃ nibbānaṃ gato. Tiṇṇo ti vā sabbaññutaṃ patto, pāragato ti arahattaṃ patto. Kiṃ vineyya pāragato ti ce? Vineyya oghaṃ, kāmoghādi-catubbidhaṃ oghaṃ taritvā atikkamma taṃ pāraṃ gato ti. Idāni ca pana me puna taritabbābhāvato attho bhisiyā na vijjati, tasmā mam’eva yuttaṃ vattuṃ “atha ce patthayasī pavassa devā” ti.
Tam pi sutvā Dhaniyo purimanayen’eva “gopī mama assavā” ti imaṃ gāthaṃ abhāsi. Tattha gopī ti bhariyaṃ niddisati. Assavā ti vacanakarā kiṃkāra-paṭisāvinī. Alolā ti mātugāmo hi pañcahi lolatāhi lolo hoti: āhāralolatāya, alaṅkāralolatāya, parapurisalolatāya, dhanalolatāya, pādalolatāya. Tathā hi mātugāmo bhatta-pūva-surādi-bhede āhāre lolatāya antamaso pārivāsika-bhattam pi bhuñjati, hatthotāpakam pi khādati, diguṇaṃ dhanam anuppadatvā pi suraṃ pivati. Alaṅkāralolatāya aññaṃ alaṅkāraṃ alabhamāno antamaso udaka-telakena pi kese osaṇḍetvā mukhaṃ parimajjati. Parapurisalolatāya antamaso puttena pi tādise padese pakkosiyamāno paṭhamaṃ asaddhammavasena cinteti. Dhanalolatāya
“Haṃsarājaṃ gahetvāna suvaṇṇā parihāyatha”.
Pādalolatāya ārāmādigamanasīlo hutvā sabbaṃ dhanaṃ vināseti. Tattha Dhaniyo “ekā pi lolatā mayhaṃ gopiyā natthī” ti dassento alolā ti āha.
Dīgharattaṃ saṃvāsiyā ti dīghakālaṃ saddhiṃ vasamānā komārabhāvato pabhuti ekato vaḍḍhitā, tena parapurise na jānātī ti dasseti. Manāpā ti evaṃ parapurise ajānantī mam’eva manaṃ allīyatī ti dasseti. Tassā na suṇāmi kiñci pāpan ti “itthannāmena nāma saddhiṃ imāya hasitaṃ vā lapitaṃ vā” ti evaṃ tassā na suṇāmi, kañci aticāradosan ti dasseti.
Atha Bhagavā etehi guṇehi gopiyā tuṭṭhaṃ Dhaniyaṃ ovadanto purimanayen’eva “cittaṃ mama assavan” ti imaṃ gātham abhāsi, atthasabhāgaṃ byañjanasabhāgañ ca. Tattha uttānatthān’eva padāni, ayaṃ pana adhippāyo: Dhaniya, tvaṃ “gopī mama assavā” ti tuṭṭho, sā pana te assavā bhaveyya vā na vā, dujjānaṃ paracittaṃ, visesato mātugāmassa. Mātugāmañ hi kucchiyā pariharantā pi rakkhituṃ na sakkonti, evaṃ durakkhacittattā eva na sakkā tumhādisehi itthī alolā ti vā saṃvāsiyā ti vā manāpā ti vā nippāpā ti vā jānituṃ.
Mayhaṃ pana cittaṃ assavaṃ ovādapaṭikaraṃ mama vase vattati, nāhaṃ tassa vase vattāmi. So c’assa assavabhāvo yamakapāṭihāriye channaṃ vaṇṇānaṃ aggidhārāsu ca udakadhārāsu ca pavattamānāsu sabbajanassa pākaṭo ahosi. Agginimmāne hi tejokasiṇaṃ samāpajjitabbaṃ, udakanimmāne āpokasiṇaṃ, nīlādinimmāne nīlādikasiṇāni. Buddhānam pi hi dve cittāni ekato na ppavattanti, ekam eva pana assavabhāvena evaṃ vasavatti ahosi.
Tañ ca kho pana sabbakilesabandhanāpagamā vimuttaṃ, vimuttattā tad eva alolaṃ, na tava gopī. Dīpaṅkarabuddhakālato ca pabhuti dānasīlādīhi dīgharattaṃ paribhāvitattā saṃvāsiyaṃ, na tava gopī. Tad etaṃ anuttarena damathena damitattā sudantaṃ, sudantattā attano vasena chadvāra-visevanaṃ pahāya mam’eva adhippāyamanassa vasenānuvattanato manāpaṃ, na tava gopī.
Pāpaṃ pana me na vijjatī ti iminā pana Bhagavā tassa attano cittassa pāpābhāvaṃ dasseti, Dhaniyo viya gopiyā. So c’assa pāpābhāvo na kevalaṃ sammāsambuddhakāle yeva, ekūnatiṃsa vassāni sarāgādikāle agāramajjhe vasantassâpi veditabbo. Tadā pi hi’ssa agāriyabhāvānurūpaṃ viññupaṭikuṭṭhaṃ kāyaduccaritaṃ vā vacīduccaritaṃ vā manoduccaritaṃ vā na uppannapubbaṃ. Tato paraṃ Māro pi chabbassāni anabhisambuddhaṃ, ekaṃ vassaṃ abhisambuddhan ti satta vassāni Tathāgataṃ anubandhi “app eva nāma vālagga-nitudana12-mattam pi’ssa pāpasamācāraṃ passeyyan” ti, so adisvā va nibbinno imaṃ gāthaṃ abhāsi
“Satta vassāni Bhagavantaṃ anubandhiṃ padā padaṃ,
otāraṃ nâdhigacchissaṃ Sambuddhassa satīmato” ti. (su. ni. 449)
Buddhakāle pi naṃ Uttaramāṇavo satta māsāni anubandhi ābhisamācārikaṃ daṭṭhukāmo, so kiñci vajjaṃ adisvā va parisuddhasamācāro Bhagavā ti gato. Cattāri hi Tathāgatassa arakkheyyāni, yathāha:
“Cattār’imāni, bhikkhave, Tathāgatassa arakkheyyāni. Katamāni cattāri? Parisuddhakāyasamācāro, bhikkhave, Tathāgato, natthi Tathāgatassa kāyaduccaritaṃ, yaṃ Tathāgato rakkheyya ‘mā me idaṃ paro aññāsī’ ti, parisuddhavacīsamācāro…pe… parisuddhamanosamācāro…pe… parisuddhājīvo, bhikkhave, Tathāgato, natthi Tathāgatassa micchājīvo, yaṃ Tathāgato rakkheyya ‘mā me idaṃ paro aññāsī’” ti (a. ni. 7.58)
Evaṃ, yasmā Tathāgatassa cittassa na kevalaṃ sammāsambuddhakāle, pubbe pi pāpaṃ natthi eva, tasmā āha “pāpaṃ pana me na vijjatī” ti. Tassādhippāyo: mam’eva cittassa pāpaṃ na sakkā suṇituṃ, na tava gopiyā, tasmā yadi etehi guṇehi tuṭṭhena “atha ce patthayasī pavassa devā” ti vattabbaṃ, mayā v’etaṃ vattabban ti.
Tam pi sutvā Dhaniyo tat’uttari pi subhāsitarasāyanaṃ pivitukāmo attano bhujissabhāvaṃ dassento āha “attavetanabhato’ham asmī” ti. Tattha attavetanabhato ti attaniyen’eva ghāsacchādanena bhato, attano yeva kammaṃ katvā jīvāmi, na parassa vetanaṃ gahetvā parassa kammaṃ karomī ti dasseti. Puttā ti dhītaro ca puttā ca, te sabbe puttā tv eva ekajjhaṃ vuccanti. Samāniyā ti sannihitā avippavuṭṭhā. Arogā ti nirābādhā, sabbe va ūru-bāhu-balā13 ti dasseti. Tesaṃ na suṇāmi kiñci pāpan ti tesaṃ corā ti vā paradārikā ti vā dussīlā ti vā kiñci pāpaṃ na suṇāmī ti.
Evaṃ vutte Bhagavā purimanayen’eva Dhaniyaṃ ovadanto imaṃ gāthaṃ abhāsi “nâhaṃ bhatako” ti. Atrâpi uttānatthān’eva padāni, ayaṃ pana adhippāyo: tvaṃ “bhujisso’ham asmī” ti mantvā tuṭṭho, paramatthato ca attano kammaṃ karitvā jīvanto pi dāso evâsi taṇhādāsattā, bhatakavādā ca na parimuccasi, vuttañ h’etaṃ
“Ūno loko atitto taṇhādāso” ti (ma. ni. 2.305)
paramatthato pana nāhaṃ bhatako’smi kassaci. Ahañ hi kassaci parassa vā attano vā bhatako na homi.
Kiṃ kāraṇā? Yasmā nibbiṭṭhena carāmi sabbaloke. Ahañ hi Dīpaṅkarapādamūlato yāva bodhi tāva sabbaññutaññāṇassa bhatako ahosiṃ, sabbaññutaṃ patto pana nibbiṭṭho nibbiso rājabhato viya, ten’eva nibbiṭṭhena sabbaññubhāvena lokuttarasamādhisukhena ca jīvāmi.
Tassa me idāni uttarikaraṇīyassa kataparicayassa14 vā abhāvato appahīna-paṭisandhikānaṃ tādisānaṃ viya pattabbo koci attho bhatiyā na vijjati, “bhaṭiyā” ti pi pāṭho, tasmā yadi bhujissatāya tuṭṭhena “atha ce patthayasī pavassa devā” ti vattabbaṃ, mayā v’etaṃ vattabban ti.
Tam pi sutvā Dhaniyo atitto va subhāsitāmatena attano pañcappakāra-gomaṇḍala-paripuṇṇabhāvaṃ dassento āha “atthi vasā” ti. Tattha vasā ti adamita-vuḍḍha-vacchakā. Dhenupā ti dhenuṃ pivantā taruṇa-vacchakā, khīradāyikā vā gāvo. Godharaṇiyo ti gabbhiniyo. Paveṇiyo ti vayappattā balībaddehi saddhiṃ methuna-patthanaka-gāvo. Usabho pi gavampatī ti yo gopālakehi pāto eva nhāpetvā, bhojetvā, pañcaṅgulaṃ datvā, mālaṃ bandhitvā “ehi, tāta, gāvo gocaraṃ pāpetvā rakkhitvā ānehī” ti pesīyati, evaṃ pesito ca tā gāvo agocaraṃ pariharitvā, gocare cāretvā, sīhabyagghādibhayā parittāyitvā āneti, tathārūpo usabho pi gavampati idha mayhaṃ gomaṇḍale atthī ti dassesi.
Evaṃ vutte Bhagavā tath’eva Dhaniyaṃ ovadanto imaṃ paccanīkagāthaṃ āha “natthi vasā” ti. Ettha c’esa adhippāyo: idha amhākaṃ sāsane adamitaṭṭhena vuḍḍhaṭṭhena ca vasāsaṅkhātā pariyuṭṭhānā vā, taruṇavacchake sandhāya vasānaṃ mūlaṭṭhena khīradāyiniyo sandhāya paggharaṇaṭṭhena dhenupāsaṅkhātā anusayā vā, paṭisandhigabbhadhāraṇaṭṭhena godharaṇisaṅkhātā puññāpuññāneñjâbhisaṅkhāracetanā vā, saṃyoga-patthanaṭṭhena paveṇisaṅkhātā patthanā taṇhā vā, ādhipaccaṭṭhena pubbaṅgamaṭṭhena seṭṭhaṭṭhena ca gavampati-usabha-saṅkhātaṃ abhisaṅkhāraviññāṇaṃ vā natthi. Svāhaṃ imāya sabbayogakkhemabhūtāya natthitāya tuṭṭho, tvaṃ pana sokādivatthubhūtāya atthitāya tuṭṭho, tasmā sabbayogakkhematāya tuṭṭhassa mam’ev’etaṃ yuttaṃ vattuṃ “atha ce patthayasī pavassa devā” ti.
Tam pi sutvā Dhaniyo tat’uttari pi subhāsitaṃ amatarasaṃ adhigantukāmo attano gogaṇassa khilabandhanasampattiṃ dassento āha “khilā nikhātā” ti. Tattha khilā ti gunnaṃ bandhanatthambhā. Nikhātā ti ākoṭetvā bhūmiyaṃ pavesitā khuddakā, mahantā khaṇitvā ṭhapitā. Asampavedhī ti akampakā. Dāmā ti vacchakānaṃ bandhanatthāya katā ganthita-pāsa-yuttā15 rajjubandhanavisesā. Muñjamayā ti muñjatiṇamayā. Navā ti acirakatā. Susaṇṭhānā ti suṭṭhu saṇṭhānā, suvaṭṭitasaṇṭhānā vā. Na hi sakkhintī ti neva sakkhissanti. Dhenupā pi chettun ti taruṇavacchakā pi chindituṃ.
Evaṃ vutte Bhagavā Dhaniyassa indriya-paripāka-kālaṃ ñatvā purimanayen’eva taṃ ovadanto imaṃ catusaccadīpikaṃ gāthaṃ abhāsi “usabhor iva chetvā” ti. Tattha usabho ti gopitā gopariṇāyako goyūthapati balībaddo. Keci pana bhaṇanti “gavasatajeṭṭho usabho, sahassajeṭṭho vasabho, satasahassajeṭṭho nisabho” ti, apare “ekagāmakhette jeṭṭho usabho, dvīsu jeṭṭho vasabho, sabbattha appaṭihato nisabho” ti, sabbe p’ete papañcā, api ca kho pana usabho ti vā vasabho ti vā nisabho ti vā sabbe p’ete appaṭisamaṭṭhena veditabbā, yathāha
“Nisabho vata bho samaṇo Gotamo” ti. (saṃ. ni. 1.38)
ra-kāro padasandhikaro. Bandhanānī ti rajjubandhanāni kilesabandhanāni ca. Nāgo ti hatthī. Pūtilatan ti gaḷocīlataṃ. Yathā hi suvaṇṇavaṇṇo pi kāyo pūtikāyo, vassasatiko pi sunakho kukkuro, tadahu jāto pi siṅgālo16 “jarasiṅgālo” ti vuccati, evaṃ abhinavā pi gaḷocīlatā asārakattena17 “pūtilatā” ti vuccati. Dālayitvā ti chinditvā. Gabbhañ ca seyyañ ca gabbhaseyyaṃ, tattha gabbhaggahaṇena jalābujayoni, seyyaggahaṇena avasesā, gabbhaseyyamukhena vā sabbā pi tā vuttā ti veditabbā. Sesam ettha padatthato uttānam eva.
Ayaṃ pan’ettha adhippāyo: Dhaniya, tvaṃ bandhanena tuṭṭho, ahaṃ pana bandhanena aṭṭīyanto18 thāmavīriyūpeto mahāusabhor iva bandhanāni pañcuddhambhāgiya-saṃyojanāni catuttha-ariyamagga-thāmavīriyena chetvā, nāgo pūtilataṃ va pañcorambhāgiya-saṃyojana-bandhanāni heṭṭhāmaggattaya-thāmavīriyena dālayitvā. Atha vā usabhor iva bandhanāni anusaye, nāgo pūtilataṃ va pariyuṭṭhānāni chetvā dālayitvā va ṭhito. Tasmā na puna gabbhaseyyaṃ upessaṃ, so’haṃ jātidukkhavatthukehi sabbadukkhehi parimutto sobhāmi “atha ce patthayasī pavassa devā” ti vadamāno. Tasmā sace tvam pi ahaṃ viya vattum icchasi, chinda tāni bandhanānī ti.
Ettha ca bandhanāni samudayasaccaṃ, gabbhaseyyā dukkhasaccaṃ, “na upessan” ti ettha anupagamo anupādisesavasena, “chetvā dālayitvā19” ti ettha chedo padālanañ ca sa-upādisesavasena nirodhasaccaṃ, yena chindati padāleti ca, taṃ maggasaccan ti.
Evam etaṃ catusaccadīpikaṃ gāthaṃ sutvā gāthāpariyosāne Dhaniyo ca pajāpati c’assa dve ca dhītaro ti cattāro janā sotāpattiphale patiṭṭhahiṃsu. Atha Dhaniyo aveccappasādayogena Tathāgate mūlajātāya patiṭṭhitāya saddhāya paññācakkhunā Bhagavato dhammakāyaṃ disvā dhammatāya coditahadayo cintesi “‘bandhanāni chindiṃ, gabbhaseyyo ca me natthī’ ti Avīciṃ pariyantaṃ katvā yāva bhavaggā ko añño evaṃ sīhanādaṃ nadissati aññatra Bhagavatā, āgato nu kho me satthā” ti. Tato Bhagavā chabbaṇṇa-rasmi-jāla-vicitraṃ suvaṇṇa-rasa-seka-piñjaraṃ viya sarīrābhaṃ Dhaniyassa nivesane muñci “passa dāni yathāsukhan” ti. Atha Dhaniyo anto paviṭṭhacandimasūriyaṃ viya samantā pajjalita-padīpa-sahassa-samujjalitam iva ca nivesanaṃ disvā “āgato Bhagavā” ti cittaṃ uppādesi, tasmiṃ yeva ca samaye megho pi pāvassi. Tenāhu saṅgītikārā “ninnañ ca thalañ ca pūrayanto” ti.
Tattha ninnan ti pallalaṃ. Thalan ti ukkūlaṃ. Evam etaṃ ukkūlavikūlaṃ sabbam pi samaṃ katvā pūrayanto mahāmegho pāvassi, vassituṃ ārabhī ti vuttaṃ hoti. Tāvad evā ti yaṃ khaṇaṃ Bhagavā sarīrābhaṃ muñci, Dhaniyo ca “satthā me āgato” ti saddhāmayaṃ cittābhaṃ muñci, taṃ khaṇaṃ pāvassī ti. Keci pana “sūriyuggamanam pi tasmiṃ yeva khaṇe” ti vaṇṇayanti. Evaṃ tasmiṃ Dhaniyassa saddhuppāda-Tathāgatobhāsapharaṇa-sūriyuggamana-kkhaṇe vassato devassa saddaṃ sutvā Dhaniyo pītisomanassajāto imam atthaṃ abhāsatha “lābhā vata no anappakā” ti dve gāthā vattabbā.
Tattha yasmā Dhaniyo saputtadāro Bhagavato ariyamaggapaṭivedhena dhammakāyaṃ disvā lokuttaracakkhunā, rūpakāyaṃ disvā lokiyacakkhunā saddhāpaṭilābhaṃ labhi, tasmā āha “lābhā vata no anappakā, ye mayaṃ Bhagavantaṃ addasāmā” ti. Tattha vata iti vimhayatthe nipāto. No iti amhākaṃ. Anappakā ti vipulā. Sesaṃ uttānam eva.
Saraṇaṃ taṃ upemā ti ettha pana kiñcāpi maggapaṭivedhen’ev’assa siddhaṃ saraṇagamanaṃ, tattha pana nicchayagamanam eva gato, idāni vācāya attasanniyyātanaṃ karoti. Maggavasena vā sanniyyātana-saraṇataṃ acala-saraṇataṃ patto, taṃ paresaṃ vācāya pākaṭaṃ karonto paṇipāta-saraṇagamanaṃ gacchati. Cakkhumā ti Bhagavā pakati-dibba-paññā-samanta-buddha-cakkhūhi pañcahi cakkhūhi cakkhumā, taṃ ālapanto āha “saraṇaṃ taṃ upema cakkhumā” ti. “Satthā no hohi tuvaṃ mahāmunī” ti idaṃ pana vacanaṃ sissabhāvūpagamanenâpi saraṇagamanaṃ pūretuṃ bhaṇati.
“Gopī ca ahañ ca assavā, brahmacariyaṃ Sugate carāmase” ti idaṃ samādānavasena. Tattha brahmacariyan ti methunavirati-magga-samaṇadhamma-sāsana-sadārasantosānam etaṃ adhivacanaṃ.
“Brahmacārī20” ti (ma. ni. 1.83)
evamādīsu hi methunavirati brahmacariyan ti vuccati,
“Idaṃ kho pana me, Pañcasikha, brahmacariyaṃ ekantanibbidāyā” ti (dī. ni. 2.329)
evamādīsu maggo,
“Abhijānāmi kho panâhaṃ, Sāriputta, caturaṅgasamannāgataṃ brahmacariyaṃ caritā21” ti (ma. ni. 1.155)
evamādīsu samaṇadhammo,
“Tayidaṃ brahmacariyaṃ iddhañ c’eva phītañ cā” ti (dī. ni. 3.174)
evamādīsu sāsanaṃ,
“Mayañ ca bhariyā nâtikkamāma, amhe ca bhariyā nâtikkamanti,
aññatra tāhi brahmacariyaṃ carāma, tasmā hi amhaṃ daharā na mīyare” ti (jā. 1.10.97)
evamādīsu sadārasantoso, idha pana samaṇadhamma-brahmacariya-pubbaṅgamaṃ uparimaggabrahmacariyam adhippetaṃ.
Sugate ti Sugatassa santike. Bhagavā hi antadvayam anupaggamma suṭṭhu gatattā, sobhaṇena ca ariyamaggagamanena samannāgatattā, sundarañ ca nibbānasaṅkhātaṃ ṭhānaṃ gatattā Sugato ti vuccati. Samīpatthe c’ettha bhummavacanaṃ, tasmā Sugatassa santike ti attho.
Carāmase ti carāma. Yañ hi taṃ sakkate carāmasī ti vuccati, taṃ idha carāmase ti. Aṭṭhakathācariyā pana “se ti nipāto” ti bhaṇanti, ten’eva c’ettha āyācanatthaṃ sandhāya “carema se” ti pi pāṭhaṃ vikappenti. Yaṃ ruccati, taṃ gahetabbaṃ.
Evaṃ Dhaniyo brahmacariya-caraṇâpadesena Bhagavantaṃ pabbajjaṃ yācitvā pabbajja-payojanaṃ dīpento āha “jātīmaraṇassa pāragū, dukkhass’antakarā bhavāmase” ti. Jātimaraṇassa pāraṃ nāma nibbānaṃ, taṃ arahattamaggena gacchāma. Dukkhassā ti vaṭṭadukkhassa. Antakarā ti abhāvakarā. Bhavāmase ti bhavāma. Atha vā aho vata mayaṃ bhaveyyāmā ti. “Carāmase” ti ettha vuttanayen’eva taṃ veditabbaṃ. Evaṃ vatvā pi ca puna ubho pi kira Bhagavantaṃ vanditvā “pabbājetha no Bhagavā” ti evaṃ pabbajjaṃ yāciṃsū ti.
Atha Māro pāpimā evaṃ te ubho pi vanditvā pabbajjaṃ yācante disvā “ime mama visayaṃ atikkamitukāmā, handa nesaṃ antarāyaṃ karomī” ti āgantvā gharāvāse guṇaṃ dassento imaṃ gātham āha “nandati puttehi puttimā” ti. Tattha nandatī ti tussati modati. Puttehī ti puttehi pi dhītarehi pi, sahayogatthe, karaṇatthe vā karaṇavacanaṃ, puttehi saha nandati, puttehi karaṇabhūtehi nandatī ti vuttaṃ hoti. Puttimā ti puttavā puggalo. Itī ti evam āha. Māro ti Vasavattibhūmiyaṃ aññataro dāmarikadevaputto. So hi saṭṭhānâtikkamitukāmaṃ janaṃ, yaṃ sakkoti, taṃ māreti, yaṃ na sakkoti, tassa pi maraṇaṃ icchati, tena “Māro” ti vuccati. Pāpimā ti lāmakapuggalo, pāpasamācāro vā. Saṅgītikārānam etaṃ vacanaṃ, sabbagāthāsu ca īdisāni. Yathā ca puttehi puttimā, gopiyo22 gohi tath’eva nandati, yassa gāvo atthi, so pi gopiyo, gohi saha, gohi vā karaṇabhūtehi tath’eva nandatī ti attho.
Evaṃ vatvā idāni tass’atthassa sādhakakāraṇaṃ niddisati, “upadhī hi narassa nandanā” ti. Tattha upadhī ti cattāro upadhayo: kāmūpadhi, khandhūpadhi, kilesūpadhi, abhisaṅkhārūpadhī ti. Kāmā hi
“Yaṃ pañcakāmaguṇe paṭicca uppajjati sukhaṃ somanassaṃ, ayaṃ kāmānaṃ assādo” ti (ma. ni. 1.166)
evaṃ vuttassa sukhassa adhiṭṭhānabhāvato “upadhīyati ettha sukhan” ti iminā vacanatthena upadhī ti vuccanti, khandhā pi khandhamūlakadukkhassa adhiṭṭhānabhāvato, kilesā pi apāyadukkhassa adhiṭṭhānabhāvato, abhisaṅkhārā pi bhavadukkhassa adhiṭṭhānabhāvato ti. Idha pana kāmūpadhi adhippeto, so satta-saṅkhāra-vasena duvidho, tattha sattapaṭibaddho padhāno, taṃ dassento “puttehi gohī” ti vatvā kāraṇam āha “upadhī hi narassa nandanā” ti.
Tass’attho: yasmā ime kāmūpadhī narassa nandanā, nandayanti naraṃ pītisomanassaṃ upasaṃharantā, tasmā veditabbam etaṃ “nandati puttehi puttimā, gopiyo gohi tath’eva nandati, tvañ ca puttimā gopiyo ca, tasmā etehi nanda, mā pabbajjaṃ pāṭikaṅkhi, pabbajitassa hi ete upadhayo na santi, evaṃ sante tvaṃ dukkhass’antaṃ patthento pi dukkhito va bhavissasī” ti.
Idāni tassa pi atthassa sādhakakāraṇaṃ niddisati “na hi so nandati, yo nirūpadhī” ti. Tass’attho: yasmā yass’ete upadhayo natthi, so piyehi ñātīhi vippayutto nibbhogūpakaraṇo na nandati, tasmā tvaṃ ime upadhayo vajjetvā pabbajito dukkhito va bhavissasī ti.
Atha Bhagavā “Māro ayaṃ pāpimā imesaṃ antarāyāya āgato” ti viditvā phalena phalaṃ pātento viya tāy’eva Mārenâbhatāya upamāya Māravādaṃ bhindanto tam eva gāthaṃ parivattetvā “upadhi sokavatthū” ti dassento āha “socati puttehi puttimā” ti.
Tattha sabbaṃ padatthato uttānam eva, ayaṃ pana adhippāyo: mā, pāpima, evaṃ avaca “nandati puttehi puttimā” ti. Sabbeh’eva hi piyehi, manāpehi nānābhāvo vinābhāvo anatikkamanīyo, ayaṃ vidhi, tesañ ca piyamanāpānaṃ puttadārānaṃ gavāssa-vaḷava-hirañña-suvaṇṇādīnaṃ vinābhāvena adhimatta-sokasalla-samappita-hadayā sattā ummattakā pi honti khittacittā, maraṇam pi nigacchanti maraṇamattam pi dukkhaṃ, tasmā evaṃ gaṇha socati puttehi puttimā, yathā ca puttehi puttimā, gopiyo gohi tath’eva socatī ti. Kiṃ kāraṇā? Upadhī hi narassa socanā, yasmā ca upadhī hi narassa socanā, tasmā eva “na hi so socati, yo nirūpadhi”.
Yo upadhīsu saṅgappahānena nirupadhi hoti,
So santuṭṭho hoti kāyaparihārikena cīvarena, kucchiparihārikena piṇḍapātena, yena yen’eva pakkamati, samādāy’eva pakkamati, seyyathā pi nāma pakkhī sakuṇo…pe… nâparaṃ itthattāyā ti pajānāti (ma. ni.)
evaṃ sabbasokasamugghātā “na hi so socati, yo nirupadhī” ti. Iti Bhagavā arahattanikūṭena desanaṃ vosāpesi. Atha vā yo nirupadhi, yo nikkileso, so na socati. Yāvad eva hi kilesā santi, tāvad eva sabbe upadhayo sokapphalā23 va honti, kilesappahānā pana natthi soko ti. Evam pi arahattanikūṭen’eva desanaṃ vosāpesi.
Desanāpariyosāne Dhaniyo ca gopī ca ubho pi pabbajiṃsu. Bhagavā ākāsen’eva Jetavanaṃ agamāsi. Te pabbajitvā arahattaṃ sacchikariṃsu, vasanaṭṭhāne ca nesaṃ gopālakā vihāraṃ kāresuṃ, so ajjâpi Gopālakavihāro24 tv eva paññāyatī ti.
