Ajja pannaraso ti Hemavatasuttaṃ. Kā uppatti? Pucchāvasikā uppatti. Hemavatena hi puṭṭho Bhagavā “chasu loko samuppanno” ti ādīni abhāsi. Tattha “ajja pannaraso” ti ādi Sātāgirena vuttaṃ, “iti Sātāgiro” ti ādi saṅgītikārehi, “kacci mano” ti ādi Hemavatena, “chasu loko” ti ādi Bhagavatā, taṃ sabbam pi samodhānetvā “Hemavatasuttan” ti vuccati. “Sātāgirisuttan” ti ekaccehi.

Tattha yāyaṃ “ajja pannaraso” ti ādi gāthā. Tassā uppatti imasmiṃ yeva bhaddakappe vīsati-vassa-sahassāyukesu purisesu uppajjitvā soḷasa-vassasahassāyukāni ṭhatvā parinibbutassa Bhagavato Kassapasammāsambuddhassa mahatiyā pūjāya sarīrakiccaṃ akaṃsu. Tassa dhātuyo avikiritvā suvaṇṇakkhandho viya ekagghanā hutvā aṭṭhaṃsu, dīghāyukabuddhānañ hi esā dhammatā. Appāyukabuddhā pana yasmā bahutarena janena adiṭṭhā eva parinibbāyanti, tasmā dhātupūjam pi katvā “tattha tattha janā puññaṃ pasavissantī” ti anukampāya “dhātuyo vikirantū” ti adhiṭṭhahanti, tena tesaṃ suvaṇṇacuṇṇāni viya dhātuyo vikiranti, seyyathāpi amhākaṃ Bhagavato.

Manussā tassa Bhagavato ekaṃ yeva dhātugharaṃ katvā cetiyaṃ patiṭṭhāpesuṃ yojanaṃ ubbedhena parikkhepena ca. Tassa ekekagāvutantarāni cattāri dvārāni ahesuṃ. Ekaṃ dvāraṃ kikī rājā aggahesi, ekaṃ tass’eva putto Pathavindharo nāma, ekaṃ senāpatipamukhā amaccā, ekaṃ seṭṭhipamukhā jānapadā. Rattasuvaṇṇamayā ekagghanā, suvaṇṇarasapaṭibhāgā ca nānāratanamayā iṭṭhakā ahesuṃ, ekekā satasahassagghanikā. Te haritāla-manosilāhi mattikā-kiccaṃ, surabhi-telena udakakiccañ ca katvā taṃ cetiyaṃ patiṭṭhāpesuṃ.

Evaṃ patiṭṭhite cetiye dve kulaputtā sahāyakā nikkhamitvā sammukhasāvakānaṃ therānaṃ santike pabbajiṃsu. Dīghāyukabuddhānañ hi sammukhasāvakā yeva pabbājenti, upasampādenti, nissayaṃ denti, itare na labhanti. Tato te kulaputtā “sāsane, bhante, kati dhurānī” ti pucchiṃsu. Therā “dve dhurānī” ti kathesuṃ “vāsadhuraṃ, pariyattidhurañ cā” ti.

Tattha pabbajitena kulaputtena ācariyupajjhāyānaṃ santike pañca vassāni vasitvā, vattapaṭivattaṃ pūretvā, pātimokkhaṃ dve-tīṇi-bhāṇavārasuttantāni ca paguṇaṃ katvā, kammaṭṭhānaṃ uggahetvā, kule vā gaṇe vā nirālayena araññaṃ pavisitvā, arahattasacchikiriyāya ghaṭitabbaṃ vāyamitabbaṃ, etaṃ vāsadhuraṃ. Attano thāmena pana ekaṃ vā nikāyaṃ pariyāpuṇitvā dve vā pañca vā nikāye pariyattito ca atthato ca suvisadaṃ sāsanaṃ anuyuñjitabbaṃ, etaṃ pariyattidhuran ti.

Atha te kulaputtā “dvinnaṃ dhurānaṃ vāsadhuram eva seṭṭhan” ti vatvā “mayaṃ pan’amhā daharā, vuḍḍhakāle vāsadhuraṃ paripūressāma, pariyattidhuraṃ tāva pūremā” ti pariyattiṃ ārabhiṃsu. Te pakatiyā va paññavanto nacirass’eva sakale buddhavacane pakataññano vinaye ca ativiya vinicchayakusalā ahesuṃ. Tesaṃ pariyattiṃ nissāya parivāro uppajji, parivāraṃ nissāya lābho, ekamekassa pañcasatapañcasatā bhikkhū parivārā ahesuṃ. Te satthusāsanaṃ dīpentā vihariṃsu, puna buddhakālo viya ahosi.

Tadā dve bhikkhū gāmakāvāse viharanti dhammavādī ca adhammavādī ca. Adhammavādī caṇḍo hoti pharuso mukharo, tassa ajjhācāro itarassa pākaṭo hoti. Tato naṃ “idaṃ te, āvuso, kammaṃ sāsanassa appatirūpan” ti codesi. So “kiṃ te diṭṭhaṃ, kiṃ sutan” ti vikkhipati. Itaro “vinayadharā jānissantī” ti āha. Tato adhammavādī “sace imaṃ vatthuṃ vinayadharā vinicchinissanti, addhā me sāsane patiṭṭhā na bhavissatī” ti ñatvā attano pakkhaṃ kātukāmo tāvad eva parikkhāre ādāya te dve there upasaṅkamitvā samaṇaparikkhāre datvā tesaṃ nissayena viharitum āraddho, sabbañ ca nesaṃ upaṭṭhānaṃ karonto sakkaccaṃ vattapaṭivattaṃ pūretukāmo viya akāsi.

Tato ekadivasaṃ upaṭṭhānaṃ gantvā vanditvā tehi vissajjiyamāno pi aṭṭhāsi yeva. Therā “kiñci vattabbam atthī” ti taṃ pucchiṃsu. So “āma, bhante, ekena me bhikkhunā saha ajjhācāraṃ paṭicca vivādo atthi, so yadi taṃ vatthuṃ idhāgantvā āroceti, yathāvinicchayaṃ na vinicchinitabban” ti. Therā “osaṭaṃ vatthuṃ yathāvinicchayaṃ na vinicchinituṃ na vaṭṭatī” ti āhaṃsu. So “evaṃ kariyamāne, bhante, mama sāsane patiṭṭhā natthi, mayh’etaṃ pāpaṃ hotu, mā tumhe vinicchinathā” ti. Te tena nippīḷiyamānā sampaṭicchiṃsu.

So tesaṃ paṭiññaṃ gahetvā puna taṃ āvāsaṃ gantvā “sabbaṃ vinayadharānaṃ santike niṭṭhitan” ti taṃ dhammavādiṃ suṭṭhutaraṃ avamaññanto pharusena samudācarati. Dhammavādī “nissaṅko ayaṃ jāto” ti tāvad eva nikkhamitvā therānaṃ parivāraṃ bhikkhusahassaṃ upasaṅkamitvā āha “nanu, āvuso, osaṭaṃ vatthu yathādhammaṃ vinicchinitabbaṃ, anosarāpetvā eva vā aññamaññaṃ accayaṃ desāpetvā sāmaggī kātabbā. Ime pana therā neva vatthuṃ vinicchiniṃsu, na sāmaggiṃ akaṃsu, kiṃ nām’etan” ti? Te pi sutvā tuṇhī ahesuṃ “nūna kiñci ācariyehi ñātan” ti. Tato adhammavādī okāsaṃ labhitvā “tvaṃ pubbe ‘vinayadharā jānissantī’ ti bhaṇasi, idāni tesaṃ vinayadharānaṃ ārocehi taṃ vatthun” ti dhammavādiṃ pīḷetvā “ajjatagge parājito tvaṃ, mā taṃ āvāsaṃ āgacchī” ti vatvā pakkāmi.

Tato dhammavādī there upasaṅkamitvā “tumhe sāsanaṃ anapekkhitvā ‘amhe upaṭṭhesi paritosesī’ ti puggalam eva apekkhittha, sāsanaṃ arakkhitvā puggalaṃ rakkhittha, ajjatagge dāni tumhākaṃ vinicchayaṃ vinicchinituṃ na vaṭṭati, ajja parinibbuto Kassapo Bhagavā” ti mahāsaddena kanditvā “naṭṭhaṃ satthu sāsanan” ti paridevamāno pakkāmi.

Atha kho te bhikkhū saṃviggamānasā “mayaṃ puggalam anurakkhantā sāsanaratanaṃ sobbhe pakkhipimhā” ti kukkuccaṃ uppādesuṃ. Te ten’eva kukkuccena upahatāsayattā 1 kālaṃ katvā sagge nibbattitum asakkontā ekācariyo Himavati Hemavate pabbate nibbatti Hemavato yakkho ti nāmena, dutiyācariyo Majjhimadese Sātapabbate Sātāgiro ti nāmena. Te pi nesaṃ parivārā bhikkhū tesaṃ yeva anuvattitvā sagge nibbattitum asakkontā tesaṃ parivārā yakkhā va hutvā nibbattiṃsu. Tesaṃ pana paccayadāyakā gahaṭṭhā devaloke nibbatiṃsu. Hemavata-Sātāgirā aṭṭhavīsati-yakkha-senāpatīnam abbhantarā mahānubhāvā yakkharājāno ahesuṃ.

Yakkhasenāpatīnañ ca ayaṃ dhammatā māse māse aṭṭha divasāni dhammavinicchayatthaṃ Himavati Manosilātale Nāgavatimaṇḍape2 devatānaṃ sannipāto hoti, tattha sannipatitabban ti. Atha Sātāgira-Hemavatā tasmiṃ samāgame aññamaññaṃ disvā sañjāniṃsu “tvaṃ, samma, kuhiṃ uppanno, tvaṃ kuhin” ti attano attano uppattiṭṭhānañ ca pucchitvā vippaṭisārino ahesuṃ “naṭṭhā mayaṃ, samma, pubbe vīsati vassasahassāni samaṇadhammaṃ katvā ekaṃ pāpasahāyaṃ nissāya yakkhayoniyaṃ uppannā, amhākaṃ pana paccayadāyakā kāmāvacaradevesu nibbattā” ti. Atha Sātāgiro āha “mārisa, Himavā nāma acchariyabbhutasammato, kiñci acchariyaṃ disvā vā sutvā vā mamāpi āroceyyāsī” ti. Hemavato pi āha “mārisa, Majjhimadeso nāma acchariyabbhutasammato, kiñci acchariyaṃ disvā vā sutvā vā mamāpi āroceyyāsī” ti. Evaṃ tesu dvīsu sahāyesu aññamaññaṃ katikaṃ katvā, tam eva uppattiṃ avivajjetvā3 vasamānesu ekaṃ buddhantaraṃ vītivattaṃ, mahāpathavī ekayojana-tigāvuta-mattaṃ ussadā.

Ath’amhākaṃ bodhisatto Dīpaṅkarapādamūle katapaṇidhāno yāva Vessantarajātakaṃ tāva pāramiyo pūretvā, Tusitabhavane uppajjitvā, tattha yāvatāyukaṃ ṭhatvā, Dhammapadanidāne vuttanayena devatāhi āyācito pañca mahāvilokanāni viloketvā, devatānaṃ ārocetvā, dvattiṃsāya pubbanimittesu vattamānesu idha paṭisandhiṃ aggahesi dasasahassi-lokadhātuṃ kampetvā. Tāni disvā pi ime rājayakkhā “iminā kāraṇena nibbattānī” ti na jāniṃsu, “khiḍḍāpasutattā nevāddasaṃsū” ti eke. Esa nayo jātiyaṃ abhinikkhamane bodhiyañ ca. Dhammacakkappavattane pana pañcavaggiye āmantetvā Bhagavati tiparivaṭṭaṃ dvādasākāraṃ varadhammacakkaṃ pavattente mahābhūmicālaṃ pubbanimittaṃ pāṭihāriyāni ca etesaṃ eko Sātāgiro yeva paṭhamaṃ addasa. Nibbattikāraṇañ ca tesaṃ ñatvā sapariso Bhagavantaṃ upasaṅkamma dhammadesanaṃ assosi, na ca kiñci visesaṃ adhigacchi. Kasmā? So hi dhammaṃ suṇanto Hemavataṃ anussaritvā “āgato nu kho me sahāyako no” ti parisaṃ oloketvā taṃ apassanto “vañcito me sahāyo, yo evaṃ vicitrapaṭibhānaṃ Bhagavato dhammadesanaṃ na suṇātī” ti vikkhittacitto ahosi. Bhagavā ca atthaṅgate pi ca sūriye desanaṃ na niṭṭhāpesi.

Atha Sātāgiro “sahāyaṃ gahetvā tena sahāgamma dhammadesanaṃ sossāmī” ti hatthiyāna-assayāna-garuḷayānādīni māpetvā pañcahi yakkhasatehi parivuto Himavantābhimukho pāyāsi. Tadā Hemavato pi. Yasmā paṭisandhi-jāti-abhinikkhamana-bodhi-parinibbānesv eva dvattiṃsa pubbanimittāni hutvā va pativigacchanti, na ciraṭṭhitikāni honti, dhammacakkapavattane pana tāni savisesāni hutvā, cirataraṃ ṭhatvā nirujjhanti, tasmā Himavati taṃ acchariyapātubhāvaṃ disvā “yato ahaṃ jāto, na kadāci ayaṃ pabbato evaṃ abhirāmo bhūtapubbo, handa dāni mama sahāyaṃ gahetvā āgamma tena saha imaṃ pupphasiriṃ anubhavissāmī” ti tath’eva Majjhimadesābhimukho āgacchati.

Te ubho pi Rājagahassa upari samāgantvā aññamaññassa āgamanakāraṇaṃ pucchiṃsu. Hemavato āha “yato ahaṃ, mārisa, jāto nāyaṃ pabbato evaṃ akālakusumitehi rukkhehi abhirāmo bhūtapubbo, tasmā etaṃ pupphasiriṃ tayā saddhiṃ anubhavissāmī ti āgato’mhī” ti. Sātāgiro āha “jānāsi, pana, tvaṃ mārisa, yena kāraṇena imaṃ akālapupphapāṭihāriyaṃ jātan” ti? “Na jānāmi, mārisā” ti. “Imaṃ, mārisa, pāṭihāriyaṃ na kevala Himavante yeva, api ca kho pana dasasahassilokadhātūsu nibbattaṃ, Sammāsambuddho loke uppanno, ajja dhammacakkaṃ pavattesi, tena kāraṇenā” ti. Evaṃ Sātāgiro Hemavatassa buddhuppādaṃ kathetvā, taṃ Bhagavato santikaṃ ānetukāmo imaṃ gātham āha. Keci pana Gotamake cetiye viharante Bhagavati ayam evam āhā ti bhaṇanti “ajja pannaraso” ti.

Tattha ajjā ti ayaṃ rattindivo, pakkhagaṇanato pannaraso, upavasitabbato uposatho. Tīsu vā uposathesu ajja pannaraso uposatho, na cātuddasī uposatho, na sāmaggī-uposatho. Yasmā vā pātimokkhuddesa-aṭṭhaṅga-upavāsa-paññatti-divasādīsu sambahulesu atthesu uposathasaddo vattati.

“Āyāmāvuso, Kappina, uposathaṃ gamissāmā” ti

ādīsu hi pātimokkhuddese uposathasaddo,

“Evaṃ aṭṭhaṅgasamannāgato kho Visākhe uposatho upavuttho” ti (a. ni. 8.43)

ādīsu pāṇātipātā veramaṇiādikesu aṭṭhaṅgesu,

“Suddhassa ve sadā phaggu,
suddhass’uposatho sadā” ti (ma. ni. 1.79)

ādīsu upavāse,

“Uposatho nāma Nāgarājā” ti (dī. ni. 2.246; ma. ni. 3.258)

ādīsu paññattiyaṃ,

“Tadah’uposathe pannarase sīsaṃnhātassā” ti (dī. ni. 3.85; ma. ni. 3.256)

ādīsu divase, tasmā avasesatthaṃ paṭikkhipitvā Āsāḷhī-puṇṇama-divasaṃ yeva niyāmento āha “ajja pannaraso uposatho” ti, pāṭipado dutiyo ti evaṃ gaṇiyamāne ajja pannaraso divaso ti attho.

Divi bhavāni dibbāni, dibbāni4 ettha atthī ti dibbā. Kāni tāni? Rūpāni. Tañ hi rattiṃ devānaṃ dasasahassi-lokadhātuto sannipatitānaṃ sarīra-vatthābharaṇa-vimānappabhāhi abbhādi-upakkilesa-virahitāya candappabhāya ca sakalajambudīpo alaṅkato ahosi, visesālaṅkato ca paramavisuddhidevassa Bhagavato sarīrappabhāya, tenāha “dibbā ratti upaṭṭhitā” ti.

Evaṃ rattiguṇa-vaṇṇanā-padesenāpi sahāyassa cittappasādaṃ janento buddhuppādaṃ kathetvā āha “anomanāmaṃ satthāraṃ, handa passāma Gotaman” ti. Tattha anomehi alāmakehi sabbākāra-paripūrehi guṇehi nāmaṃ assā ti anomanāmo. Tathā hi’ssa

“Bujjhitā saccānī ti Buddho, bodhetā pajāyā ti Buddho” ti (mahāni. 192; cūḷani. pārāyanatthutigāthāniddesa 97; paṭi. ma. 1.162)

ādinā nayena Buddho ti anomehi guṇehi nāmaṃ,

“Bhaggarāgo ti Bhagavā, bhaggadoso ti Bhagavā” ti (mahāni. 84)

ādinā nayena ca anomehi guṇehi nāmaṃ, esa nayo “arahaṃ sammāsambuddho vijjācaraṇasampanno” ti ādīsu. Diṭṭhadhammikādīsu atthesu devamanusse anusāsati “imaṃ pajahatha, imaṃ samādāya vattathā” ti satthā, api ca

“Satthā Bhagavā satthavāho, yathā satthavāho satte kantāraṃ tāretī” ti (mahāni. 190)

ādinā Niddese vuttanayenāpi satthā. Taṃ anomanāmaṃ satthāraṃ.

Handā ti byavasānatthe nipāto. Passāmā ti tena attānaṃ saha saṅgahetvā paccuppannavacanaṃ. Gotaman ti Gotamagottaṃ. Kiṃ vuttaṃ hoti? “Satthā, na satthā” ti mā vimatiṃ akāsi, ekantabyavasito hutvā va ehi passāma Gotaman ti.

Evaṃ vutte Hemavato “ayaṃ Sātāgiro ‘anomanāmaṃ satthāran’ ti bhaṇanto tassa sabbaññutaṃ pakāseti, sabbaññuno ca dullabhā loke, sabbaññupaṭiññehi Pūraṇādi-sadiseh’eva loko upadduto, so pana yadi sabbaññū, addhā tādilakkhaṇappatto bhavissati, tena taṃ evaṃ pariggaṇhissāmī” ti cintetvā tādilakkhaṇaṃ pucchanto āha “kacci mano” ti.

Tattha kaccī ti pucchā. Mano ti cittaṃ. Supaṇihito ti suṭṭhu ṭhapito, acalo asampavedhī. Sabbesu bhūtesu sabbabhūtesu. Tādino ti tādilakkhaṇappattass’eva sato. Pucchā eva vā ayaṃ “so te satthā sabbabhūtesu tādī, udāhu no” ti. Iṭṭhe aniṭṭhe cā ti evarūpe ārammaṇe. Saṅkappā ti vitakkā. Vasīkatā ti vasaṃ gamitā.

Kiṃ vuttaṃ hoti? Yaṃ tvaṃ satthāraṃ vadasi, tassa te satthuno kacci tādilakkhaṇappattassa sato sabbabhūtesu mano supaṇihito, udāhu yāva calanapaccayaṃ na labhati, tāva supaṇihito viya khāyati. So vā te satthā kacci sabbabhūtesu samacittena tādī, udāhu no? Ye ca kho iṭṭhāniṭṭhesu ārammaṇesu rāgadosavasena saṅkappā uppajjeyyuṃ, tyāssa kacci vasīkatā, udāhu kadāci tesam pi vasena vattatī ti.

Tato Sātāgiro Bhagavato sabbaññubhāve byavasitattā sabbe sabbaññuguṇe anujānanto āha “mano c’assa supaṇihito” ti ādi.

Tattha supaṇihito ti suṭṭhu ṭhapito, pathavīsamo avirujjhanaṭṭhena, Sinerusamo suppatiṭṭhitācalanaṭṭhena, indakhīlasamo catubbidhamāra-paravādigaṇehi akampiyaṭṭhena. Anacchariyañ c’etaṃ, Bhagavato idāni sabbākārasampannattā sabbaññubhāve ṭhitassa mano supaṇihito acalo bhaveyya. Yassa tiracchānabhūtassāpi sarāgādikāle Chaddantanāgakule uppannassa savisena sallena viddhassa acalo ahosi, vadhake pi tasmiṃ nappadussi, aññadatthu tass’eva attano dante chetvā adāsi. Tathā Mahākapibhūtassa mahatiyā silāya sīse pahaṭassāpi tass’eva ca maggaṃ dassesi. Tathā Vidhurapaṇḍitabhūtassa pādesu gahetvā saṭṭhiyojane Kāḷapabbatapapāte pakkhittassāpi aññadatthu tass’eva yakkhass’atthāya dhammaṃ desesi. Tasmā sammad eva āha Sātāgiro “mano c’assa supaṇihito” ti.

Sabbabhūtesu tādino ti sabbasattesu tādilakkhaṇappattass’eva sato mano supaṇihito, na yāva paccayaṃ na labhatī ti attho. Tattha Bhagavato tādilakkhaṇaṃ pañcadhā veditabbaṃ. Yathāha

“Bhagavā pañcah’ākārehi tādī, iṭṭhāniṭṭhe tādī, cattāvī ti tādī, muttāvī ti tādī, tiṇṇāvī ti tādī, tanniddesā ti tādī. Kathaṃ Bhagavā iṭṭhāniṭṭhe tādī? Bhagavā lābhe pi tādī” ti (mahāni. 38)

evam ādi sabbaṃ Niddese vuttanayen’eva gahetabbaṃ, lābhādayo ca tassa Mahā-aṭṭhakathāyaṃ vitthāritanayena veditabbā.

“Pucchā eva vā ayaṃ so te satthā sabbabhūtesu tādī, udāhu no” ti imasmim pi vikappe sabbabhūtesu samacittatāya tādī amhākaṃ satthā ti attho. Ayañ hi Bhagavā sukhūpasaṃhārakāmatāya dukkhāpanayanakāmatāya ca sabbasattesu samacitto, yādiso attani, tādiso paresu, yādiso mātari Mahāmāyāya, tādiso Ciñcamāṇavikāya, yādiso pitari Suddhodane, tādiso Suppabuddhe, yādiso putte Rāhule, tādiso vadhakesu Devadatta-Dhanapālaka-Aṅgulimālādīsu, sadevake loke pi tādī. Tasmā sammad evāha Sātāgiro “sabbabhūtesu tādino” ti.

Atho iṭṭhe aniṭṭhe cā ti, ettha pana evaṃ attho daṭṭhabbo yaṃ kiñci iṭṭhaṃ vā aniṭṭhaṃ vā ārammaṇaṃ, sabbappakārehi tattha ye rāgadosavasena saṅkappā uppajjeyyuṃ, tyāssa anuttarena maggena rāgādīnaṃ pahīnattā vasīkatā, na kadāci tesaṃ vase vattati. So hi Bhagavā anāvilasaṅkappo suvimuttacitto suvimuttapañño ti.

Ettha ca supaṇihitamanatāya ayoniso manasikārābhāvo vutto. Sabbabhūtesu iṭṭhāniṭṭhehi so5 yattha bhaveyya, taṃ satta-saṅkhāra-bhedato duvidham ārammaṇaṃ vuttaṃ, saṅkappavasībhāvena tasmiṃ ārammaṇe tassa manasikārābhāvato kilesappahānaṃ vuttaṃ. Supaṇihitamanatāya ca manosamācārasuddhi, sabbabhūtesu tāditāya kāyasamācārasuddhi, saṅkappavasībhāvena vitakkamūlakattā vācāya vacīsamācārasuddhi. Tathā supaṇihitamanatāya lobhādi-sabbadosābhāvo, sabbabhūtesu tāditāya mettādi-guṇasabbhāvo, saṅkappavasībhāvena paṭikūle appaṭikūla-saññitādi-bhedā ariyiddhi, tāya c’assa sabbaññubhāvo vutto hotī ti veditabbo.

Evaṃ Hemavato pubbe manodvāravasen’eva tādibhāvaṃ pucchitvā tañ ca paṭijānantam imaṃ sutvā daḷhīkammatthaṃ idāni dvārattayavasenāpi, pubbe vā saṅkhepena kāyavacīmanodvārasuddhiṃ pucchitvā tañ ca paṭijānantam imaṃ sutvā daḷhīkammattham eva vitthārenāpi pucchanto āha “kacci adinnan” ti.

Tattha gāthābandhasukhatthāya paṭhamaṃ adinnādānaviratiṃ pucchati. Ārā pamādamhā ti pañcasu kāmaguṇesu cittavossaggato dūrībhāvena abrahmacariyaviratiṃ pucchati. Ārā pamadamhā ti pi paṭhan ti, ārā mātugāmā ti vuttaṃ hoti. Jhānaṃ na riñcatī ti iminā pana tassā yeva tividhāya kāyaduccarita-viratiyā balavabhāvaṃ pucchati. Jhānayuttassa hi virati balavatī hotī ti.

Taṃ atthato pākaṭam eva. Imissā pi gāthāya tatiyapāde “pamādamhā pamadamhā” ti dvidhā pāṭho. Catutthapāde ca jhānaṃ na riñcatī ti jhānaṃ rittakaṃ suññakaṃ na karoti, na pariccajatī ti attho veditabbo.

Evaṃ kāyadvāre suddhiṃ sutvā idāni vacīdvāre suddhiṃ pucchanto āha “kacci musā na bhaṇatī” ti.

Ettha khīṇātī ti khīṇo, vihiṃsati badhatī ti attho, vācāya patho byappatho, khīṇo byappatho assā ti khīṇabyappatho, taṃ na-kārena paṭisedhetvā pucchati “na khīṇabyappatho” ti, na pharusavāco ti vuttaṃ hoti. “Nākhīṇabyappatho” ti pi pāṭho, na akhīṇavacano ti attho—pharusavacanañ hi paresaṃ hadaye akhīyamānaṃ tiṭṭhati—tādisavacano kacci na so ti vuttaṃ hoti. Vibhūtī ti vināso, vibhūtiṃ kāsati6 karoti vā ti vibhūtikaṃ, vibhūtikam eva vebhūtikaṃ, vebhūtiyan ti pi vuccati, pesuññass’etaṃ adhivacanaṃ, tañ hi sattānaṃ aññamaññato bhedanena vināsaṃ karoti. Catutthapāde mantā ti paññā vuccati. Bhagavā yasmā tāya mantāya paricchinditvā attham eva bhāsati atthato anapetavacanaṃ, na samphaṃ—aññāṇapurekkhārañ hi niratthakavacanaṃ buddhānaṃ natthi—tasmā āha “mantā atthaṃ so bhāsatī” ti. Evaṃ vacīdvārasuddhim pi sutvā idāni manodvārasuddhiṃ pucchanto āha “kacci na rajjati kāmesū” ti.

Tattha kāmā ti vatthukāmā, tesu kilesakāmena na rajjatī ti pucchanto anabhijjhālutaṃ pucchati. Anāvilan ti pucchanto byāpādena āvilabhāvaṃ sandhāya abyāpādataṃ pucchati. Mohaṃ atikkanto ti pucchanto yena mohena mūḷho micchādiṭṭhiṃ gaṇhāti, tassātikkamena sammādiṭṭhitaṃ pucchati. Dhammesu cakkhumā ti pucchanto sabbadhammesu appaṭihatassa ñāṇacakkhuno, pañcacakkhuvisayesu vā dhammesu pañcannam pi cakkhūnaṃ vasena sabbaññutaṃ pucchati “dvārattayapārisuddhiyā pi sabbaññū na hotī” ti cintetvā.

Atha Sātāgiro yasmā Bhagavā appatvā va arahattaṃ anāgāmimaggena kāmarāgabyāpādānaṃ pahīnattā neva kāmesu rajjati, na byāpādena āvilacitto, sotāpattimaggen’eva ca micchādiṭṭhipaccayassa sacca-paṭicchādaka-mohassa pahīnattā mohaṃ atikkanto, sāmañ ca saccāni abhisambujjhitvā buddho ti vimokkhantikaṃ nāmaṃ yathāvuttāni ca cakkhūni paṭilabhi, tasmā tassa manodvārasuddhiṃ sabbaññutañ ca ugghosento āha “na so rajjati kāmesū” ti.

Evaṃ Hemavato Bhagavato dvārattayapārisuddhiṃ sabbaññutañ ca sutvā haṭṭho udaggo atītajātiyaṃ bāhusacca-visadāya paññāya asajjamāna-vacanappatho hutvā acchariyabbhutarūpe sabbaññuguṇe sotukāmo āha “kacci vijjāya sampanno” ti.

Tattha vijjāya sampanno ti iminā dassanasampattiṃ pucchati. Saṃsuddhacāraṇo ti iminā gamanasampattiṃ. Chandavasena c’ettha dīghaṃ katvā cākāram āha, saṃsuddhacaraṇo ti attho. Āsavā khīṇā ti iminā etāya dassana-gamana-sampattiyā pattabbāya āsavakkhaya-saññitāya paṭhama-nibbānadhātuyā pattiṃ pucchati. N’atthi punabbhavo ti iminā dutiya-nibbānadhātu-patti-samatthataṃ, paccavekkhaṇañāṇena vā paramassāsappattiṃ ñatvā ṭhitabhāvaṃ.

Tato Hemavato “sammāsambuddho Bhagavā” ti Bhagavati nikkaṅkho hutvā ākāse ṭhito yeva Bhagavantaṃ pasaṃsanto Sātāgirañ ca ārādhento āha “sampannaṃ munino cittan” ti.

Tass’attho sampannaṃ munino cittaṃ, “mano c’assa supaṇihito” ti ettha vutta-tādibhāvena puṇṇaṃ sampuṇṇaṃ7, “na so adinnaṃ ādiyatī” ti ettha vutta-kāyakammunā, “na so rajjati kāmesū” ti ettha vutta-manokammunā ca puṇṇaṃ sampuṇṇaṃ, “musā ca so na bhaṇatī” ti ettha vutta-byappathena ca vacīkammunā ti vuttaṃ hoti. Tass’attho eṇimigass’eva jaṅghā assā ti eṇijaṅgho. Buddhānañ hi eṇimigass’eva anupubbavaṭṭā jaṅghā honti, na purato nimmaṃsā pacchato susumārakucchi viya uddhumātā. Kisā ca buddhā honti dīgha-rassa-sama-vaṭṭita-yuttaṭṭhānesu tathārūpāya aṅga-paccaṅga-sampattiyā, na vaṭharapurisā viya thūlā, paññāya vilikhita-kilesattā vā kisā. Ajjhattika-bāhira-sapatta-viddhaṃsanato vīrā. Ekāsanabhojitāya parimitabhojitāya ca appāhārā, na dvattimattālopabhojitāya. Yathāha

“Ahaṃ kho pana, Udāyi, app ekadā iminā pattena samatittikam pi bhuñjāmi, bhiyyo pi bhuñjāmi, ‘appāhāro samaṇo Gotamo appāhāratāya ca vaṇṇavādī’ ti iti ce maṃ, Udāyi, sāvakā sakkareyyuṃ garuṃ kareyyuṃ māneyyuṃ pūjeyyuṃ, sakkatvā garuṃ katvā upanissāya vihareyyuṃ, ye te, Udāyi, mama sāvakā kosakāhārā pi aḍḍhakosakāhārā pi beluvāhārā pi aḍḍhabeluvāhārā pi, na maṃ te iminā dhammena sakkareyyuṃ…pe… upanissāya vihareyyun” ti (ma. ni. 2.242)

Āhāre chandarāgābhāvena alolupā aṭṭhaṅgasamannāgataṃ āhāraṃ āhārenti. Moneyyasampattiyā munino. Anagārikatāya vivekaninnamānasatāya ca vane jhāyanti. Tenāha Hemavato yakkho “eṇijaṅghaṃ…pe… ehi passāma Gotaman” ti.

Evañ ca vatvā puna tassa Bhagavato santike dhammaṃ sotukāmatāya “sīhaṃ v’ekacaran” ti imaṃ gātham āha.

Tass’attho sīhaṃ vā ti durāsadaṭṭhena khamanaṭṭhena nibbhayaṭṭhena ca kesarasīhasadisaṃ. Yāya taṇhāya “taṇhādutiyo puriso” ti vuccati, tassā abhāvena ekacaraṃ, ekissā lokadhātuyā dvinnaṃ buddhānaṃ anuppattito pi ekacaraṃ, Khaggavisāṇasutte vuttanayenāpi c’ettha taṃ taṃ attho daṭṭhabbo. Nāgan ti punabbhavaṃ neva gantāraṃ nāgantāraṃ, atha vā āguṃ na karotī ti pi nāgo, balavā ti pi nāgo, taṃ nāgaṃ. Kāmesu anapekkhinan ti dvīsu pi kāmesu chandarāgābhāvena anapekkhinaṃ. Upasaṅkamma pucchāma, maccupāsappamocanan ti taṃ evarūpaṃ mahesiṃ upasaṅkamitvā tebhūmakavaṭṭassa maccupāsassa pamocanaṃ vivaṭṭaṃ nibbānaṃ pucchāma. Yena vā upāyena dukkhasamudayasaṅkhātā maccupāsā pamuccati, taṃ maccupāsappamocanaṃ pucchāmā ti. Imaṃ gāthaṃ Hemavato Sātāgirañ ca Sātāgiraparisañ ca attano parisañ ca sandhāya āha.

Tena kho pana samayena Āsāḷhīnakkhattaṃ ghositaṃ ahosi. Atha samantato alaṅkatapaṭiyatte devanagare siriṃ paccanubhontī viya Rājagahe Kāḷī nāma Kuraragharikā upāsikā pāsādam āruyha sīhapañjaraṃ vivaritvā gabbha9-parissamaṃ vinodentī savāta10-ppadese utuggahaṇatthaṃ ṭhitā tesaṃ yakkhasenāpatīnaṃ taṃ buddhaguṇapaṭisaṃyuttaṃ kathaṃ ādi-majjha-pariyosānato assosi. Sutvā ca “evaṃ vividhaguṇa-samannāgatā buddhā” ti buddhārammaṇaṃ pītiṃ uppādetvā tāya nīvaraṇāni vikkhambhetvā tatth’eva ṭhitā sotāpattiphale patiṭṭhāsi. Tato eva Bhagavatā

“Etad aggaṃ, bhikkhave, mama sāvikānaṃ upāsikānaṃ anussavappasannānaṃ, yad idaṃ Kāḷī upāsikā Kuraragharikā” ti (a. ni. 1.267)

Te pi yakkhasenāpatayo sahassayakkhaparivārā majjhimayāmasamaye Isipatanaṃ patvā, dhammacakka-ppavattita-pallaṅken’eva nisinnaṃ Bhagavantaṃ upasaṅkamma vanditvā, imāya gāthāya Bhagavantaṃ abhitthavitvā okāsam akārayiṃsu “akkhātāraṃ pavattāran” ti.

Tass’attho ṭhapetvā taṇhaṃ tebhūmake dhamme

“Idaṃ kho pana, bhikkhave, dukkhaṃ ariyasaccan” ti (saṃ. ni. 5.1081; mahāva. 14)

ādinā nayena saccānaṃ vavatthānakathāya akkhātāraṃ,

“‘Taṃ kho pan’idaṃ dukkhaṃ ariyasaccaṃ pariññeyyan’ ti me bhikkhave” ti

ādinā nayena tesu kiccañāṇa-katañāṇa-ppavattanena pavattāraṃ. Ye vā dhammā yathā voharitabbā, tesu tathā vohārakathanena akkhātāraṃ, tesaṃ yeva dhammānaṃ sattānurūpato pavattāraṃ. Ugghaṭitaññu-vipañcitaññūnaṃ vā desanāya akkhātāraṃ, neyyānaṃ paṭipādanena pavattāraṃ. Uddesena vā akkhātāraṃ, vibhaṅgena tehi tehi pakārehi vacanato pavattāraṃ. Bodhipakkhiyānaṃ vā salakkhaṇakathanena akkhātāraṃ, sattānaṃ cittasantāne pavattanena pavattāraṃ. Saṅkhepato vā tīhi parivaṭṭehi saccānaṃ kathanena akkhātāraṃ, vitthārato pavattāraṃ.

“Saddhindriyaṃ dhammo, taṃ dhammaṃ pavattetī ti dhammacakkan” ti (paṭi. ma. 2.40)

evam ādinā Paṭisambhidā-nayena vitthāritassa dhammacakkassa pavattanato pavattāraṃ.

Sabbadhammānan ti catubhūmakadhammānaṃ. Pāragun ti chahākārehi pāraṃ gataṃ abhiññāya, pariññāya, pahānena, bhāvanāya, sacchikiriyāya, samāpattiyā. So hi Bhagavā sabbadhamme abhijānanto gato ti abhiññāpāragū, pañcupādānakkhandhe parijānanto gato ti pariññāpāragū, sabbakilese pajahanto gato ti pahānapāragū, cattāro magge bhāvento gato ti bhāvanāpāragū, nirodhaṃ sacchikaronto gato ti sacchikiriyāpāragū, sabbā samāpattiyo samāpajjanto gato ti samāpattipāragū. Evaṃ sabbadhammānaṃ pāraguṃ.

Buddhaṃ verabhayātītan ti aññāṇa-sayanato paṭibuddhattā buddhaṃ, sabbena vā Saraṇavaṇṇanāyaṃ vutten’atthena buddhaṃ, pañcaverabhayānaṃ atītattā verabhayātītaṃ. Evaṃ Bhagavantaṃ atitthavantā “mayaṃ pucchāma Gotaman” ti okāsam akārayiṃsu.

Atha nesaṃ yakkhānaṃ tejena ca paññāya ca aggo Hemavato yathādhippetaṃ pucchitabbaṃ pucchanto “kismiṃ loko” ti imaṃ gātham āha.

Tassādipāde kismin ti bhāvenabhāvalakkhaṇe bhummavacanaṃ, kismiṃ uppanne loko samuppanno hotī ti ayañ h’ettha adhippāyo, sattaloka-saṅkhāraloke sandhāya pucchati. Kismiṃ kubbati santhavan ti ahan ti vā maman ti vā taṇhādiṭṭhisanthavaṃ kismiṃ kubbati, adhikaraṇatthe bhummavacanaṃ. Kissa loko ti upayogatthe sāmivacanaṃ, kiṃ upādāya loko ti saṅkhyaṃ gacchatī ti ayañ h’ettha adhippāyo. Kismiṃ loko ti bhāvenabhāvalakkhaṇa-kāraṇatthesu bhummavacanaṃ, kismiṃ sati kena kāraṇena loko vihaññati pīḷīyati bādhīyatī ti ayañ h’ettha adhippāyo.

Atha Bhagavā yasmā chasu ajjhattika-bāhiresu āyatanesu uppannesu sattaloko ca dhanadhaññādivasena saṅkhāraloko ca uppanno hoti. Yasmā c’ettha sattaloko tesv eva chasu duvidham pi santhavaṃ karoti, cakkhāyatanaṃ vā hi “ahaṃ maman” ti gaṇhāti avasesesu vā aññataraṃ. Yathāha

“Cakkhu attā ti yo vadeyya, taṃ na upapajjatī” ti (ma. ni. 3.422)

ādi. Yasmā ca etāni yeva cha upādāya duvidho pi loko ti saṅkhyaṃ gacchati. Yasmā ca tesv eva chasu sati sattaloko dukkhapātubhāvena vihaññati. Yathāha

“Hatthesu, bhikkhave, sati ādānanikkhepanaṃ hoti, pādesu sati abhikkamapaṭikkamo hoti, pabbesu sati samiñjanapasāraṇaṃ hoti, kucchismiṃ sati jighacchāpipāsā hoti, evam eva kho, bhikkhave, cakkhusmiṃ sati cakkhusamphassapaccayā uppajjati ajjhattaṃ sukhaṃ dukkhan” ti (saṃ. ni. 4.237)

ādi. Tathā tesu ādhārabhūtesu paṭihato saṅkhāraloko vihaññati. Yathāha

“Cakkhusmiṃ anidassane sappaṭighe paṭihaññi vā” iti (dha. sa. 597-8) ca

“Cakkhu, bhikkhave, paṭihaññati manāpāmanāpesu rūpesū” ti (saṃ. ni. 4.238)

evam ādi. Tathā tehi yeva kāraṇabhūtehi duvidho pi loko vihaññati. Yathāha

“Cakkhu vihaññati manāpāmanāpesu rūpesū” ti (saṃ. ni. 4.238) ca

“Cakkhu, bhikkhave, ādittaṃ, rūpā ādittā. Kena ādittaṃ? Rāgagginā” ti (saṃ. ni. 4.28, mahāva. 54)

evam ādi. Tasmā cha-ajjhattika-bāhirāyatana-vasena taṃ pucchaṃ vissajjento āha “chasu loko samuppanno” ti.

Atha so yakkho attanā vaṭṭavasena puṭṭhapañhaṃ Bhagavatā dvādasāyatanavasena saṅkhipitvā vissajjitaṃ na suṭṭhu upalakkhetvā tañ ca atthaṃ tappaṭipakkhañ ca ñātukāmo saṅkhepen’eva vaṭṭavivaṭṭaṃ pucchanto āha “katamaṃ tan” ti.

Tattha upādātabbaṭṭhena upādānaṃ, dukkhasaccass’etaṃ adhivacanaṃ. Yattha loko vihaññatī ti “chasu loko vihaññatī” ti evaṃ Bhagavatā yattha chabbidhe upādāne loko vihaññatī ti vutto, taṃ katamaṃ upādānan ti? Evaṃ upaḍḍhagāthāya sarūpen’eva dukkhasaccaṃ pucchi, samudayasaccaṃ pana tassa kāraṇabhāvena gahitam eva hoti. Niyyānaṃ pucchito ti imāya pana upaḍḍhagāthāya maggasaccaṃ pucchi. Maggasaccena hi ariyasāvako dukkhaṃ parijānanto, samudayaṃ pajahanto, nirodhaṃ sacchikaronto, maggaṃ bhāvento lokamhā niyyāti, tasmā niyyānan ti vuccati. Kathan ti kena pakārena. Dukkhā pamuccatī ti “upādānan” ti vuttā vaṭṭadukkhā pamokkhaṃ pāpuṇāti. Evam ettha sarūpen’eva maggasaccaṃ pucchi, nirodhasaccaṃ pana tassa visayabhāvena gahitam eva hoti.

Evaṃ yakkhena sarūpena dassetvā ca adassetvā ca catusaccavasena pañhaṃ puṭṭho Bhagavā ten’eva nayena vissajjento āha “pañca kāmaguṇā” ti.

Tattha pañcakāmaguṇa-saṅkhāta-gocara-ggahaṇena taggocarāni pañcāyatanāni gahitān’eva honti. Mano chaṭṭho etesan ti manochaṭṭhā. Paveditā ti pakāsitā. Ettha ajjhattikesu chaṭṭhassa manāyatanassa gahaṇena tassa visayabhūtaṃ dhammāyatanaṃ gahitam eva hoti. Evaṃ “katamaṃ taṃ upādānan” ti imaṃ pañhaṃ vissajjento puna pi dvādasāyatanānaṃ vasen’eva dukkhasaccaṃ pakāsesi.

Manogahaṇena vā sattannaṃ viññāṇadhātūnaṃ gahitattā tāsu purima-pañcaviññāṇadhātu-ggahaṇena tāsaṃ vatthūni pañca cakkhādīni āyatanāni, manodhātu-manoviññāṇadhātu-ggahaṇena tāsaṃ vatthu-gocara-bhedaṃ dhammāyatanaṃ gahitam evā ti evam pi dvādasāyatanavasena dukkhasaccaṃ pakāsesi. Lokuttara-manāyatana-dhammāyatanekadeso pan’ettha yattha loko vihaññati, taṃ sandhāya niddiṭṭhattā na saṅgayhati.

Ettha chandaṃ virājetvā ti ettha dvādasāyatanabhede dukkhasacce tān’evāyatanāni khandhato dhātuto nāmarūpato ti tathā tathā vavatthapetvā, tilakkhaṇaṃ āropetvā, vipassanto arahattamagga-pariyosānāya vipassanāya taṇhāsaṅkhātaṃ chandaṃ sabbaso virājetvā vinetvā viddhaṃsetvā ti attho. Evaṃ dukkhā pamuccatī ti iminā pakārena etasmā vaṭṭadukkhā pamuccatī ti. Evam imāya upaḍḍhagāthāya “niyyānaṃ pucchito brūhi, kathaṃ dukkhā pamuccatī” ti ayaṃ pañho vissajjito hoti, maggasaccañ ca pakāsitaṃ. Samudaya-nirodha-saccāni pan’ettha purimanayen’eva saṅgahitattā pakāsitān’eva hontī ti veditabbāni.

Upaḍḍhagāthāya vā dukkhasaccaṃ, chandena samudayasaccaṃ, “virājetvā” ti ettha virāgena nirodhasaccaṃ, “virāgā vimuccatī” ti vacanato vā maggasaccaṃ, “evan” ti upāyanidassanena maggasaccaṃ, dukkhanirodhan ti vacanato vā “dukkhā pamuccatī” ti dukkhapamokkhena nirodhasaccan ti evam ettha cattāri saccāni pakāsitāni hontī ti veditabbāni.

Evaṃ catusaccagabbhāya gāthāya lakkhaṇato niyyānaṃ pakāsetvā puna tad eva sakena niruttābhilāpena nigamento āha “etaṃ lokassa niyyānan” ti.

Ettha etan ti pubbe vuttassa niddeso. Lokassā ti tedhātukalokassa. Yathātathan ti aviparītaṃ. Etaṃ vo aham akkhāmī ti sace pi maṃ sahassakkhattuṃ puccheyyātha, etaṃ vo aham akkhāmi, na aññaṃ. Kasmā? Yasmā evaṃ dukkhā pamuccati, na aññathā ti adhippāyo.

Atha vā etena niyyānena eka-dva-tti-kkhatuṃ niggatānam pi etaṃ vo aham akkhāmi, uparivisesādhigamāya pi etad eva aham akkhāmī ti attho. Kasmā? Yasmā evaṃ dukkhā pamuccati asesanissesā ti arahattanikūṭena desanaṃ niṭṭhāpesi.

Desanāpariyosāne dve pi yakkhasenāpatayo sotāpattiphale patiṭṭhahiṃsu saddhiṃ yakkhasahassena.

Atha Hemavato pakatiyā pi dhammagaru idāni ariyabhūmiyaṃ patiṭṭhāya suṭṭhutaraṃ atitto Bhagavato vicitrapaṭibhānāya desanāya Bhagavantaṃ sekkhāsekkhabhūmiṃ pucchanto “ko sūdha taratī” ti gātham abhāsi.

Tattha ko sū’dha tarati oghan ti iminā caturoghaṃ ko taratī ti sekkhabhūmiṃ pucchati avisesena. Yasmā aṇṇavan ti na vitthatamattaṃ nāpi gambhīramattaṃ api ca pana yaṃ vitthatatarañ ca gambhīratarañ ca, taṃ vuccati, tādiso ca saṃsāraṇṇavo, ayañ hi samantato pariyantābhāvena vitthato, heṭṭhā patiṭṭhābhāvena upari ālambanābhāvena ca gambhīro, tasmā “ko idha tarati aṇṇavaṃ, tasmiñ ca appatiṭṭhe anālambe gambhīre aṇṇave ko na sīdatī” ti asekkhabhūmiṃ pucchati.

Atha Bhagavā yo bhikkhu jīvitahetu pi vītikkamaṃ akaronto sabbadā sīlasampanno lokiyalokuttarāya ca paññāya paññavā, upacārappanāsamādhinā iriyāpatha-heṭṭhima-maggaphalehi ca susamāhito, tilakkhaṇaṃ āropetvā vipassanāya niyakajjhattacintanasīlo, sātaccakiriyāvahāya appamādasatiyā ca samannāgato, yasmā so catutthena maggena imaṃ suduttaraṃ oghaṃ anavasesaṃ tarati, tasmā sekkhabhūmiṃ vissajjento “sabbadā sīlasampanno” ti imaṃ tisikkhāgabbhaṃ gātham āha.

Ettha hi sīlasampadāya adhisīlasikkhā, satisamādhīhi adhicittasikkhā, ajjhattacintitāpaññāhi adhipaññāsikkhā ti tisso sikkhā saupakārā sānisaṃsā ca vuttā. Upakāro hi sikkhānaṃ lokiyapaññā sati ca, ānisaṃso sāmaññaphalānī ti.

Evaṃ paṭhamagāthāya sekkhabhūmiṃ dassetvā idāni asekkhabhūmiṃ dassento dutiyagātham āha.

Tass’attho virato kāmasaññāyā ti yā kāci kāmasaññā, tato sabbato catutthamagga-sampayuttāya samucchedaviratiyā virato. “Viratto” ti pi pāṭho. Tadā “kāmasaññāyā” ti bhummavacanaṃ hoti, Sagāthāvagge pana “kāmasaññāsū” ti pi (saṃ. ni. 1.96) pāṭho. Catūhi pi maggehi dasannaṃ saṃyojanānaṃ atītattā sabbasaṃyojanātigo, catutthen’eva vā uddhambhāgiya-sabbasaṃyojanātigo. Tatratatrābhinandinī-taṇhā-saṅkhātāya nandiyā tiṇṇañ ca bhavānaṃ parikkhīṇattā nandībhavaparikkhīṇo. So tādiso khīṇāsavo bhikkhu gambhīre saṃsāraṇṇave na sīdati, nandīparikkhayena saupādisesaṃ, bhavaparikkhayena ca anupādisesaṃ nibbānathalaṃ samāpajja paramassāsappattiyā ti.

Atha Hemavato sahāyañ ca yakkhaparisañ ca oloketvā pītisomanassajāto “gambhīrapaññan” ti evam ādīhi gāthāhi Bhagavantaṃ abhitthavitvā sabbāvatiyā parisāya sahāyena ca saddhiṃ abhivādetvā, padakkhiṇaṃ katvā, attano vasanaṭṭhānaṃ agamāsi.

Tāsaṃ pana gāthānaṃ ayaṃ atthavaṇṇanā gambhīrapaññan ti gambhīrāya paññāya samannāgataṃ, tattha Paṭisambhidāyaṃ vuttanayena gambhīrapaññā veditabbā. Vuttañ hi tattha

“Gambhīresu khandhesu ñāṇaṃ pavattatī ti gambhīrapaññā” ti (paṭi. ma. 3.4)

ādi. Nipuṇatthadassin ti nipuṇehi khattiyapaṇḍitādīhi abhisaṅkhatānaṃ pañhānaṃ atthadassiṃ atthānaṃ vā yāni nipuṇāni kāraṇāni duppaṭivijjhāni aññehi tesaṃ dassanena nipuṇatthadassiṃ. Rāgādikiñcanābhāvena akiñcanaṃ. Duvidhe kāme tividhe ca bhave alagganena kāmabhave asattaṃ. Khandhādibhedesu sabbārammaṇesu chandarāgabandhanābhāvena sabbadhi vippamuttaṃ.

Dibbe pathe kamamānan ti aṭṭhasamāpattibhede dibbe pathe samāpajjanavasena caṅkamantaṃ. Tattha kiñcāpi na tāya velāya Bhagavā dibbe pathe kamati, api ca kho pubbe kamanaṃ upādāya kamanasatti-sabbhāvena tattha laddhavasībhāvatāya evaṃ vuccati. Atha vā ye te visuddhidevā arahanto, tesaṃ pathe santavihāre kamanenāp’etaṃ vuttaṃ. Mahantānaṃ guṇānaṃ esanena mahesiṃ.

Dutiyagāthāya aparena pariyāyena thuti āraddhā ti katvā puna nipuṇatthadassiggahaṇaṃ nidasseti, atha vā nipuṇatthe dassetāran ti attho. Paññādadan ti paññāpaṭilābha-saṃvattanikāya paṭipattiyā kathanena paññādāyakaṃ. Kāmālaye asattan ti yvāyaṃ kāmesu taṇhādiṭṭhivasena duvidho ālayo, tattha asattaṃ.

Sabbavidun ti sabbadhammaviduṃ, sabbaññun ti vuttaṃ hoti. Sumedhan ti tassa sabbaññubhāvassa maggabhūtāya pāramīpaññā-saṅkhātāya medhāya samannāgataṃ. Ariye pathe ti aṭṭhaṅgike magge, phalasamāpattiyaṃ vā. Kamamānan ti paññāya ajjhogāhamānaṃ, maggalakkhaṇaṃ ñatvā desanato, pavisamānaṃ vā khaṇe khaṇe phalasamāpatti-samāpajjanato, catubbidhamagga-bhāvanā-saṅkhātāya kamanasattiyā kamitapubbaṃ vā.

Sudiṭṭhaṃ vata no ajjā ti, ajja amhehi sundaraṃ diṭṭhaṃ, ajja vā amhākaṃ sundaraṃ diṭṭhaṃ, dassanan ti attho. Suppabhātaṃ suhuṭṭhitan ti ajja amhākaṃ suṭṭhu pabhātaṃ sobhanaṃ vā pabhātaṃ ahosi, ajja ca no sundaraṃ uṭṭhitaṃ ahosi, anuparodhena11 sayanato uṭṭhitaṃ. Kiṃ kāraṇaṃ? Yaṃ addasāma Sambuddhaṃ, yasmā Sambuddhaṃ addasāmā ti attano lābhasampattiṃ ārabbha pāmojjaṃ pavedeti.

Iddhimanto ti kammavipākajiddhiyā samannāgatā. Yasassino ti lābhagga-parivāragga-sampannā. Saraṇaṃ yantī ti kiñcāpi maggen’eva gatā, tathā pi sotāpannabhāva-paridīpanatthaṃ pasāda-dassanatthañ ca vācaṃ bhindati.

Gāmā gāman ti devagāmā devagāmaṃ. Nagā nagan ti devapabbatā devapabbataṃ. Namassamānā Sambuddhaṃ, dhammassa ca sudhammatan ti “Sammāsambuddho vata Bhagavā, svākkhāto vata Bhagavato dhammo” ti ādinā nayena buddhasubodhitañ ca dhammasudhammatañ ca, “suppaṭipanno vata Bhagavato sāvakasaṅgho” ti ādinā saṅgha-suppaṭipattiñ ca abhitthavitvā abhitthavitvā namassamānā dhammaghosakā hutvā vicarissāmā ti vuttaṃ hoti. Sesam ettha uttānattham evā ti.
