Pūraḷāsasuttavaṇṇanā

Evaṃ me sutan ti Pūraḷāsasuttaṃ. Kā uppatti? Bhagavā pacchābhattakiccāvasāne buddhacakkhunā lokaṃ volokento Sundarikabhāradvājabrāhmaṇaṃ arahattassa upanissayasampannaṃ disvā “tattha mayi gate kathā pavattissati, tato kathāvasāne dhammadesanaṃ sutvā esa brāhmaṇo pabbajitvā arahattaṃ pāpuṇissatī” ti ca ñatvā tattha gantvā kathaṃ samuṭṭhāpetvā imaṃ suttam abhāsi.

Tattha evaṃ me sutan ti ādi saṅgītikārakānaṃ vacanaṃ, kiṃjacco bhavan ti ādi tassa brāhmaṇassa, na brāhmaṇo no’mhī ti ādi Bhagavato, taṃ sabbam pi samodhānetvā “Pūraḷāsasuttan” ti vuccati. Tattha vuttasadisaṃ vuttanayen’eva veditabbaṃ, avuttaṃ vaṇṇayissāma, tañ ca kho uttānatthāni padāni anāmasantā.

Kosalesū ti Kosalā nāma jānapadino rājakumārā. Tesaṃ nivāso eko pi janapado ruḷhisaddena “Kosalā” ti vuccati. Tasmiṃ Kosalesu janapade. Keci pana “yasmā pubbe Mahāpanādaṃ rājakumāraṃ nānānāṭakādīni disvā sitamattam pi akarontaṃ sutvā rājā āṇāpesi ‘yo mama puttaṃ hasāpeti, sabbābharaṇehi naṃ alaṅkaromī’ ti. Tato naṅgalāni chaḍḍetvā mahājanakāyo sannipati. Te ca manussā atireka-sattavassāni nānākīḷikādayo dassentā pi taṃ nāsakkhiṃsu hasāpetuṃ. Tato Sakko devanaṭaṃ pesesi, so dibbanāṭakaṃ dassetvā hasāpesi. Atha te manussā attano attano vasanokāsābhimukhā pakkamiṃsu, te paṭipathe mittasuhajjādayo disvā paṭisanthāramakaṃsu ‘kacci bho kusalaṃ, kacci bho kusalan’ ti. Tasmā taṃ ‘kusalan’ ti saddaṃ upādāya so padeso ‘Kosalo’ ti vuccatī” ti vaṇṇayanti. Sundarikāya nadiyā tīre ti Sundarikā ti evaṃnāmikāya nadiyā tīre.

Tena kho panā ti yena samayena Bhagavā taṃ brāhmaṇaṃ vinetukāmo gantvā tassā nadiyā tīre sasīsaṃ pārupitvā rukkhamūle nisajjāsaṅkhātena iriyāpathavihārena viharati. Sundarikabhāradvājo ti so brāhmaṇo tassā nadiyā tīre vasati aggiñ ca juhati, bhāradvājo ti c’assa gottaṃ, tasmā evaṃ vuccati. Aggiṃ juhatī ti āhuti-pakkhipanena jāleti. Aggihuttaṃ paricaratī ti agyāyatanaṃ sammajjanūpalepana-balikammādinā payirupāsati.

Ko nu kho imaṃ habyasesaṃ bhuñjeyyā ti so kira brāhmaṇo aggimhi juhitvā avasesaṃ pāyāsaṃ disvā cintesi “aggimhi tāva pakkhittapāyāso Mahābrahmunā bhutto, ayaṃ pana avaseso atthi. Taṃ yadi brahmuno mukhato jātassa brāhmaṇass’eva dadeyyaṃ, evaṃ me pitarā saha putto pi santappito bhaveyya, suvisodhito ca brahmalokagāmimaggo assa, handāhaṃ brāhmaṇaṃ gavesāmī” ti. Tato brāhmaṇa-dassanatthaṃ uṭṭhāyāsanā catuddisā anuvilokesi “ko nu kho imaṃ habyasesaṃ bhuñjeyyā” ti.

Aññatarasmiṃ rukkhamūle ti tasmiṃ vanasaṇḍe seṭṭharukkhamūle. Sasīsaṃ pārutan ti saha sīsena pārutakāyaṃ. Kasmā pana Bhagavā evam akāsi, kiṃ Nārāyana-saṅkhāta-balo pi hutvā nāsakkhi himapātaṃ sītavātañ ca paṭibāhitun ti? Atth’etaṃ kāraṇaṃ. Na hi buddhā sabbaso kāyapaṭijagganaṃ karonti eva, api ca Bhagavā “āgate brāhmaṇe sīsaṃ vivarissāmi, maṃ disvā brāhmaṇo kathaṃ pavattessati, ath’assa kathānusārena dhammaṃ desessāmī” ti kathāpavattanatthaṃ evam akāsi.

Disvāna vāmena…pe… ten’upasaṅkamī ti so kira Bhagavantaṃ disvā brāhmaṇo “ayaṃ sasīsaṃ pārupitvā sabbarattiṃ padhānam anuyutto, imassa dakkhiṇodakaṃ datvā imaṃ habyasesaṃ dassāmī” ti brāhmaṇasaññī hutvā eva upasaṅkami.


Muṇḍo ayaṃ bhavaṃ, muṇḍako ayaṃ bhavan ti sīse vivaritamatte va kesantaṃ disvā “muṇḍo” ti āha. Tato suṭṭhutaraṃ olokento parittam pi sikhaṃ adisvā hīḷento “muṇḍako” ti āha. Evarūpā hi nesaṃ brāhmaṇānaṃ diṭṭhi. Tato vā ti yattha ṭhito addasa, tamhā padesā. Muṇḍā pī ti kenaci kāraṇena muṇḍitasīsā pi honti.

Na brāhmaṇo no’mhī ti ettha na-kāro paṭisedhe, no-kāro avadhāraṇe

ādīsu viya. Tena n’ev’amhi brāhmaṇo ti dasseti. Na rājaputto ti khattiyo n’amhi. Na vessāyano ti vesso pi n’amhi. Uda koci no’mhī ti añño pi suddo vā caṇḍālo vā koci na homī ti evaṃ ekaṃsen’eva jātivāda-samudācāraṃ paṭikkhipati. Kasmā? Mahāsamuddaṃ pattā viya hi nadiyo, pabbajjūpagatā kulaputtā jahanti purimāni nāmagottāni. Pahārādasuttañ c’ettha (a. ni. 8.19) sādhakaṃ.

Evaṃ jātivādaṃ paṭikkhipitvā yathābhūtam attānaṃ āvikaronto āha “gottaṃ pariññāya puthujjanānaṃ, akiñcano manta carāmi loke” ti. Kathaṃ gottaṃ pariññāsī ti ce? Bhagavā hi tīhi pariññāhi pañcakkhandhe pariññāsi, tesu ca pariññātesu gottaṃ pariññātam eva hoti. Rāgādi-kiñcanānaṃ pana abhāvena so akiñcano, mantā jānitvā ñāṇānuparivattīhi kāyakammādīhi carati, tenāha “gottaṃ…pe… loke” ti. Mantā vuccati paññā, tāya c’esa carati, ten’evāha “mantaṃ carāmi loke” ti chandavasena rassaṃ katvā.

Evaṃ attānaṃ āvikatvā idāni “evaṃ oḷārikaṃ liṅgam pi disvā pucchitabbāpucchitabbaṃ na jānāsī” ti brāhmaṇassa upārambhaṃ āropento āha “saṅghāṭivāsī…pe… gottapañhan” ti. Ettha ca chinna-saṅghaṭitaṭṭhena tīṇi pi cīvarāni “saṅghāṭī” ti adhippetāni, tāni nivāseti paridahatī ti saṅghāṭivāsī. Agaho ti ageho, nittaṇho ti adhippāyo. Nivāsāgāraṃ pana Bhagavato Jetavane Mahāgandhakuṭi-Karerimaṇḍalamāḷa-Kosambakuṭi-Candanamālādi anekappakāraṃ, taṃ sandhāya na yujjati. Nivuttakeso ti apanītakeso, ohāritakesamassū ti vuttaṃ hoti. Abhinibbutatto ti atīva vūpasanta-pariḷāha-citto, guttacitto vā.

Alippamāno idha māṇavehī ti upakaraṇa-sinehassa pahīnattā manussehi alitto asaṃsaṭṭho ekanta-vivitto. Akallaṃ maṃ brāhmaṇā ti yvāhaṃ evaṃ saṅghāṭivāsī…pe… alippamāno idha māṇavehi, taṃ maṃ tvaṃ, brāhmaṇa, pākatikāni nāmagottāni atītaṃ pabbajitaṃ samānaṃ appatirūpaṃ gottapañhaṃ pucchasī ti.

Evaṃ vutte upārambhaṃ mocento brāhmaṇo āha pucchanti ve, bho brāhmaṇā, brāhmaṇebhi saha “brāhmaṇo no bhavan” ti. Tattha brāhmaṇo no ti brāhmaṇo nū ti attho. Idaṃ vuttaṃ hoti nāhaṃ bho akallaṃ pucchāmi. Amhākañ hi brāhmaṇasamaye brāhmaṇā brāhmaṇehi saha samāgantvā “brāhmaṇo nu bhavaṃ, bhāradvājo nu bhavan” ti evaṃ jātim pi gottam pi pucchanti evā ti.

Evaṃ vutte Bhagavā brāhmaṇassa cittamudubhāva-karaṇatthaṃ mantesu attano pakataññutaṃ pakāsento āha “brāhmaṇo hi ce tvaṃ brūsi…pe… catuvīsatakkharan” ti. Tass’attho: sace tvaṃ “brāhmaṇo ahaṃ” ti brūsi, mañ ca abrāhmaṇaṃ brūsi, tasmā bhavantaṃ sāvittiṃ pucchāmi tipadaṃ catuvīsatakkharaṃ, taṃ me brūhī ti.

Ettha ca Bhagavā paramattha-vedānaṃ tiṇṇaṃ piṭakānaṃ ādibhūtaṃ paramattha-brāhmaṇehi sabbabuddhehi pakāsitaṃ atthasampannaṃ byañjanasampannañ ca “buddhaṃ saraṇaṃ gacchāmi, dhammaṃ saraṇaṃ gacchāmi, saṅghaṃ saraṇaṃ gacchāmī” ti imaṃ ariyasāvittiṃ sandhāya pucchati. Yadi pi hi brāhmaṇo aññaṃ vadeyya, addhā naṃ Bhagavā “nāyaṃ, brāhmaṇa, ariyassa vinaye sāvittī ti vuccatī” ti tassa asārakattaṃ dassetvā idh’eva patiṭṭhāpeyya.

Brāhmaṇo pana “sāvittiṃ pucchāmi tipadaṃ catuvīsatakkharan” ti idaṃ attano samayasiddhaṃ sāvittilakkhaṇabyañjanakaṃ brahmassarena nicchāritavacanaṃ sutvā va “addhāyaṃ samaṇo brāhmaṇasamaye niṭṭhaṃ gato, ahaṃ pana aññāṇena ‘abrāhmaṇo ayan’ ti paribhaviṃ, sādhurūpo mantapāragū brāhmaṇo va eso” ti niṭṭhaṃ gantvā “handa naṃ yaññavidhiṃ dakkhiṇeyyavidhiñ ca pucchāmī” ti tam atthaṃ pucchanto “kiṃnissitā…pe… loke” ti imaṃ visamagāthā-padattayam āha.

Tass’attho kiṃnissitā kimadhippāyā kiṃ patthentā isayo ca khattiyā ca brāhmaṇā ca aññe ca manujā devatānaṃ atthāya yaññaṃ akappayiṃsu. “Yañña-m-akappayiṃsū” ti ma-kāro padasandhikaro. Akappayiṃsū ti saṃvidahiṃsu akaṃsu. Puthū ti bahū annapānadānādinā bhedena anekappakāre, puthū vā isayo manujā khattiyā brāhmaṇā ca kiṃnissitā yaññam akappayiṃsu. Kathaṃ nesaṃ taṃ kammaṃ samijjhatī ti iminādhippāyena pucchati.

Ath’assa Bhagavā tam atthaṃ byākaronto “yadantagū vedagū yaññakāle, yassāhutiṃ labhe tassijjheti brūmī” ti idaṃ sesapadadvayam āha. Tattha yadantagū ti yo antagū, okārassa akāro, dakāro ca padasandhikaro

“Asādhāraṇa-m-aññesan” ti (khu. pā. 8.9)

ādīsu makāro viya.

Ayaṃ pana attho yo vaṭṭadukkhassa tīhi pariññāhi antagatattā antagū, catūhi ca maggañāṇavedehi kilese vijjhitvā gatattā vedagū, so yassa isi-manuja-khattiya-brāhmaṇānaṃ aññatarassa yaññakāle yasmiṃ kismiñci āhāre paccupaṭṭhite antamaso vana-paṇṇa-mūla-phalādimhi pi āhutiṃ labhe, tato kiñci deyyadhammaṃ labheyya, tassa taṃ yaññakammaṃ ijjhe samijjheyya, mahapphalaṃ bhaveyyā ti brūmī ti.

Atha brāhmaṇo taṃ Bhagavato paramattha-yoga-gambhīraṃ atimadhura-gira-nibbikāra-sara-sampannaṃ desanaṃ sutvā sarīra-sampatti-sūcitañ c’assa sabbaguṇa-sampattiṃ sambhāvayamāno pītisomanassajāto “addhā hi tassā” ti gātham āha. Tattha iti brāhmaṇo ti saṅgītikārānaṃ vacanaṃ, sesaṃ brāhmaṇassa.

Tass’attho addhā hi tassa mayhaṃ hutam ijjhe, ayaṃ ajja deyyadhammo ijjhissati samijjhissati mahapphalo bhavissati yaṃ tādisaṃ vedagum addasāma, yasmā tādisaṃ bhavanta-rūpaṃ vedaguṃ addasāma. Tvañ ñeva hi so vedagū, na añño. Ito pubbe pana tumhādisānaṃ vedagūnaṃ antagūnañ ca adassanena amhādisānaṃ yaññe paṭiyattaṃ añño jano bhuñjati pūraḷāsaṃ carukañ ca pūvañ cā ti.

Tato Bhagavā attani pasannaṃ vacanapaṭiggahaṇa-sajjaṃ brāhmaṇaṃ viditvā yathāssa suṭṭhu pākaṭā honti, evaṃ nānappakārehi dakkhiṇeyye pakāsetukāmo “tasmāt iha tvan” ti gātham āha. Tass’attho yasmā mayi pasanno’si, tasmā pana iha tvaṃ, brāhmaṇa, upasaṅkamma pucchā ti attānaṃ dassento āha. Idāni ito pubbaṃ atthena-atthika-padaṃ parapadena sambandhitabbaṃ: atthena atthiko tassa atthatthika-bhāvassa anurūpaṃ kilesaggi-vūpasamena santaṃ, kodhadhūma-vigamena vidhūmaṃ, dukkhābhāvena anīghaṃ, anekavidha-āsābhāvena nirāsaṃ app ev’idha ekaṃsena idha ṭhito va idha vā sāsane abhivinde lacchasi adhigacchissasi sumedhaṃ varapaññaṃ khīṇāsava-dakkhiṇeyyan ti.

Atha vā yasmā mayi pasanno’si, tasmāt iha, tvaṃ brāhmaṇa, atthena atthiko samāno upasaṅkamma puccha santaṃ vidhūmaṃ anīghaṃ nirāsan ti attānaṃ dassento āha. Evaṃ pucchanto app ev’idha abhivinde sumedhaṃ khīṇāsava-dakkhiṇeyyan ti evam p’ettha yojanā veditabbā.

Atha brāhmaṇo yathānusiṭṭhaṃ paṭipajjamāno Bhagavantaṃ āha “yaññe rato’haṃ…pe… brūhi me tan” ti. Tattha yañño yāgo dānan ti atthato ekaṃ. Tasmā dānarato ahaṃ, tāya eva dānārāmatāya dānaṃ dātukāmo, na pana jānāmi, evaṃ ajānantaṃ anusāsatu maṃ bhavaṃ, anusāsanto ca uttānen’eva nayena yattha hutaṃ ijjhate brūhi me tan ti evam ettha atthayojanā veditabbā. “Yathāhutan” ti pi pāṭho.

Ath’assa Bhagavā vattukāmo āha “tena hi…pe… desessāmī” ti. Ohitasotassa c’assa anusāsanatthaṃ tāva “mā jātiṃ pucchī” ti gātham āha.

Tattha mā jātiṃ pucchī ti yadi hutasamiddhiṃ dānamahapphalataṃ paccāsīsasi, jātiṃ mā puccha. Akāraṇañ hi dakkhiṇeyya-vicāraṇāya jāti. Caraṇañ ca pucchā ti api ca kho sīlādiguṇabhedaṃ caraṇaṃ puccha. Etañ hi dakkhiṇeyya-vicāraṇāya kāraṇaṃ.

Idāni’ssa tam atthaṃ vibhāvento nidassanam āha “kaṭṭhā have jāyati jātavedo” ti ādi. Tatrāyam adhippāyo idha kaṭṭhā aggi jāyati, na ca so sālādikaṭṭhā jāto eva aggikiccaṃ karoti, sāpānadoṇi-ādi-kaṭṭhā jāto na karoti, api ca kho attano acci-ādi-guṇa-sampannattā eva karoti. Evaṃ na brāhmaṇakulādīsu jāto eva dakkhiṇeyyo hoti, caṇḍālakulādīsu jāto na hoti, api ca kho nīcākulīno pi uccākulīno pi khīṇāsavamuni dhitimā hirīnisedho ājāniyo hoti, imāya dhiti-hiri-pamukhāya guṇasampattiyā jātimā uttamadakkhiṇeyyo hoti. So hi dhitiyā guṇe dhārayati, hiriyā dose nisedheti. Vuttañ c’etaṃ

“hiriyā hi santo na karonti pāpan” ti.

Tena te brūmi

“Mā jātiṃ pucchī caraṇañ ca puccha, kaṭṭhā have jāyati jātavedo,
nīcākulīno pi munī dhitīmā, ājāniyo hoti hirīnisedho” ti.

Esa saṅkhepo, vitthāro pana Assalāyanasuttānusārena (ma. ni. 2.401 ādayo) veditabbo.

Evam etaṃ Bhagavā cātuvaṇṇisuddhiyā anusāsitvā idāni yattha hutaṃ ijjhate, yathā ca hutaṃ ijjhate, tam atthaṃ dassetuṃ “saccena danto” ti ādigātham āha. Tattha saccenā ti paramatthasaccena. Tañ hi patto danto hoti. Tenāha “saccena danto” ti. Damasā upeto ti indriyadamena samannāgato. Vedantagū ti vedehi vā kilesānaṃ antaṃ gato, vedānaṃ vā antaṃ catutthamaggañāṇaṃ gato. Vūsitabrahmacariyo ti puna vasitabbābhāvato vuttha-maggabrahmacariyo. Kālena tamhi habyaṃ pavecche ti attano deyyadhamma-ṭṭhita-kālaṃ tassa sammukhībhāva-kālañ ca upalakkhetvā tena kālena tādise dakkhiṇeyye deyyadhammaṃ paveccheyya, paveseyya paṭipādeyya.

Susamāhitindriyā ti suṭṭhu samāhitaindriyā, avikkhittaindriyā ti vuttaṃ hoti. Cando va rāhuggahaṇā pamuttā ti yathā cando rāhuggahaṇā, evaṃ kilesaggahaṇā pamuttā ye atīva bhāsanti c’eva tapanti ca.

Satā ti satisampannā. Mamāyitānī ti taṇhā-diṭṭhi-mamāyitāni.

Yo kāme hitvā ti ito pabhuti attānaṃ sandhāya vadati. Tattha kāme hitvā ti kilesakāme pahāya. Abhibhuyyacārī ti tesaṃ pahīnattā vatthukāme abhibhuyyacārī. Jātimaraṇassa antaṃ nāma nibbānaṃ vuccati, tañ ca yo vedi attano paññābalena aññāsi. Udakarahado vā ti ye ime Anotattadaho Kaṇṇamuṇḍadaho Rathakāradaho Chaddantadaho Kuṇāladaho Mandākinidaho Sīhappapātadaho ti Himavati satta mahārahadā aggi-sūriya-santāpehi asamphuṭṭhattā niccaṃ sītalā, tesaṃ aññataro udakarahado va sīto parinibbuta-kilesa-pariḷāhattā.

Samo ti tulyo. Samehī ti Vipassiādīhi buddhehi. Te hi paṭivedhasamattā “samā” ti vuccanti. Natthi tesaṃ paṭivedhenādhigantabbesu guṇesu, pahātabbesu vā dosesu vemattatā, addhāna-āyu-kula-ppamāṇābhinikkhamana-padhāna-bodhi-rasmīhi pana nesaṃ vemattatā hoti.

Tathā hi te heṭṭhima-paricchedena catūhi asaṅkhyeyyehi kappasatasahassena ca pāramiyo pūrenti, uparima-paricchedena soḷasahi asaṅkhyeyyehi kappasatasahassena ca. Ayaṃ nesaṃ addhānavemattatā. Heṭṭhima-paricchedena ca vassa-satāyuka-kāle uppajjanti, uparima-paricchedena vassa-satasahassāyuka-kāle. Ayaṃ nesaṃ āyuvemattatā. Khattiyakule vā brāhmaṇakule vā uppajjanti. Ayaṃ kulavemattatā. Uccā vā honti aṭṭhāsīti-hatthappamāṇā, nīcā vā pannarasa-aṭṭhārasa-hatthappamāṇā. Ayaṃ pamāṇavemattatā. Hatthi-assa-ratha-sivikādīhi nikkhamanti vehāsena vā. Tathā hi Vipassi-Kakusandhā assarathena nikkhamiṃsu, Sikhī-Koṇāgamanā hatthikkhandhena, Vessabhū sivikāya, Kassapo vehāsena, Sakyamuni assapiṭṭhiyā. Ayaṃ nekkhammavemattatā. Sattāhaṃ vā padhānam anuyuñjanti, aḍḍhamāsaṃ, māsaṃ, dvemāsaṃ, temāsaṃ, catumāsaṃ, pañcamāsaṃ, chamāsaṃ, ekavassaṃ dvi-ti-catu-pañca-cha-vassāni vā. Ayaṃ padhānavemattatā. Assattho vā bodhirukkho hoti nigrodhādīnaṃ vā aññataro. Ayaṃ bodhivemattatā. Byāmāsīti-ananta-pabhāyuttā honti. Tattha byāmappabhā vā asītippabhā vā sabbesaṃ samānā, anantappabhā pana dūram pi gacchati āsannam pi, ekagāvutaṃ dvigāvutaṃ yojanaṃ anekayojanaṃ cakkavāḷa-pariyantam pi, Maṅgalassa buddhassa sarīrappabhā dasasahassa-cakkavāḷaṃ agamāsi. Evaṃ sante pi manasā cintāyattā va sabbabuddhānaṃ, yo yattakam icchati, tassa tattakaṃ gacchati. Ayaṃ rasmivemattatā. Imā aṭṭha vemattatā ṭhapetvā avasesesu paṭivedhenādhigantabbesu guṇesu, pahātabbesu vā dosesu natthi nesaṃ viseso, tasmā “samā” ti vuccanti. Evam etehi samo samehi.

Visamehi dūre ti na samā visamā, paccekabuddhādayo avasesa-sabbasattā, tehi visamehi asadisatāya dūre. Sakalajambudīpaṃ pūretvā pallaṅkena pallaṅkaṃ saṅghaṭṭetvā nisinnā paccekabuddhā pi hi guṇehi ekassa sammāsambuddhassa kalaṃ nāgghanti soḷasiṃ, ko pana vādo sāvakādīsu. Tenāha “visamehi dūre” ti. Tathāgato hotī ti ubhayapadehi dūre ti yojetabbaṃ. Anantapañño ti aparimitapañño. Lokiyamanussānañ hi paññaṃ upanidhāya aṭṭhamakassa paññā adhikā, tassa paññaṃ upanidhāya sotāpannassa, evaṃ yāva arahato paññaṃ upanidhāya paccekabuddhassa paññā adhikā, paccekabuddhassa paññaṃ pana upanidhāya Tathāgatassa paññā adhikā ti na vattabbā, anantā icc eva pana vattabbā. Tenāha “anantapañño” ti.

Anūpalitto ti taṇhādiṭṭhilepehi alitto. Idha vā huraṃ vā ti idhaloke vā paraloke vā. Yojanā pan’ettha samo samehi visamehi dūre Tathāgato hoti. Kasmā? Yasmā anantapañño anupalitto idha vā huraṃ vā, tena Tathāgato arahati pūraḷāsan ti.

Yamhi na māyā ti ayaṃ pana gāthā aññā ca īdisā māyādi-dosa-yuttesu brāhmaṇesu dakkhiṇeyya-saññā-pahānatthaṃ vuttā ti veditabbā. Tattha amamo ti satta-saṅkhāresu “idaṃ mamā” ti pahīna-mamāyita-bhāvo.

Nivesanan ti taṇhā-diṭṭhi-nivesanaṃ. Tena hi mano tīsu bhavesu nivisati, tena taṃ “nivesanaṃ manaso” ti vuccati. Tatth’eva vā nivisati taṃ hitvā gantuṃ asamatthatāya, tena pi “nivesanan” ti vuccati. Pariggahā ti taṇhādiṭṭhiyo eva, tāhi pariggahitadhammā vā. Kecī ti appamattakā pi. Anupādiyāno ti tesaṃ nivesana-pariggahānaṃ abhāvā kañci dhammaṃ anupādiyamāno.

Samāhito maggasamādhinā. Udatārī ti uttiṇṇo. Dhammaṃ c’aññāsī ti sabbañ ca ñeyyadhammaṃ aññāsi. Paramāya diṭṭhiyā ti sabbaññutaññāṇena.

Bhavāsavā ti bhava-taṇhā-jhāna-nikanti-sassatadiṭṭhi-sahagatā rāgā. Vacī ti vācā. Kharā ti kakkhaḷā pharusā. Vidhūpitā ti daḍḍhā. Atthagatā ti atthaṅgatā. Na santī ti vidhūpitattā atthaṅgatattā ca, ubhayehi pana ubhayaṃ yojetabbaṃ. Sabbadhī ti sabbesu khandhāyatanādīsu.

Mānasattesū ti mānena laggesu. Dukkhaṃ pariññāyā ti vaṭṭadukkhaṃ tīhi pariññāhi parijānitvā. Sakhettavatthun ti sahetupaccayaṃ, saddhiṃ kammakilesehī ti vuttaṃ hoti.

Āsaṃ anissāyā ti taṇhaṃ anallīyitvā. Vivekadassī ti nibbānadassī. Paravediyan ti parehi ñāpetabbaṃ. Diṭṭhim upātivatto ti dvāsaṭṭhibhedam pi micchādiṭṭhiṃ atikkanto. Ārammaṇā ti paccayā, punabbhavakāraṇānī ti vuttaṃ hoti.

Paroparā ti varāvarā sundarāsundarā, parā vā bāhirā, aparā ajjhattikā. Sameccā ti ñāṇena paṭivijjhitvā. Dhammā ti khandhāyatanādayo dhammā. Upādānakhaye vimutto ti nibbāne nibbānārammaṇato vimutto, nibbānārammaṇa-vimutti-lābhī ti attho.

Saṃyojanaṃjātikhayantadassī ti saṃyojanakkhayantadassī jātikkhayantadassī ca. Saṃyojanakkhayantena c’ettha saupādisesā nibbānadhātu, jātikkhayantena anupādisesā vuttā. Khayanto ti hi accantakhayassa samucchedappahānass’etaṃ adhivacanaṃ. Anunāsikalopo c’ettha “vivekajaṃ pītisukhan” ti ādīsu viya na kato. Yo pānudī ti yo apanudi. Rāgapathan ti rāgārammaṇaṃ, rāgam eva vā. Rāgo pi hi duggatīnaṃ pathattā “rāgapatho” ti vuccati kammapatho viya.

Suddho nidoso vimalo akāco ti parisuddha-kāyasamācārāditāya suddho. Yehi “rāgadosā ayaṃ pajā, dosadosā, mohadosā” ti vuccati, tesaṃ abhāvā nidoso. Aṭṭhapurisamalavigamā vimalo. Upakkilesābhāvato akāco. Upakkiliṭṭho hi upakkilesena “sakāco” ti vuccati. Suddho vā yasmā niddoso, niddosatāya vimalo, bāhira-malābhāvena vimalattā akāco. Samalo hi “sakāco” ti vuccati. Vimalattā vā āguṃ na karoti, tena akāco. Āgukiriyā hi upaghātakaraṇato “kāco” ti vuccati.

Attano attānaṃ nānupassatī ti ñāṇasampayuttena cittena vipassanto attano khandhesu aññaṃ attānaṃ nāma na passati, khandhamattam eva passati. Yā cāyaṃ “attanā va attānaṃ sañjānāmī” ti tassa saccato thetato diṭṭhi uppajjati, tassā abhāvā attano attānaṃ nānupassati, aññadatthu paññāya khandhe passati. Maggasamādhinā samāhito, kāyavaṅkādīnaṃ abhāvā ujjugato, lokadhammehi akampanīyato ṭhitatto, taṇhāsaṅkhātāya ejāya pañcannaṃ cetokhilānañ ca aṭṭhaṭṭhānāya kaṅkhāya ca abhāvā anejo akhilo akaṅkho.

Mohantarā ti mohakāraṇā mohapaccayā, sabbakilesānam etaṃ adhivacanaṃ. Sabbesu dhammesu ca ñāṇadassī ti sacchikata-sabbaññutaññāṇo. Tañ hi sabbesu dhammesu ñāṇaṃ, tañ ca Bhagavā passi, “adhigataṃ me” ti sacchikatvā vihāsi, tena vuccati “sabbesu dhammesu ca ñāṇadassī” ti. Sambodhin ti arahattaṃ. Anuttaran ti paccekabuddhasāvakehi asādhāraṇaṃ. Sivan ti khemaṃ nirupaddavaṃ sassirikaṃ vā. Yakkhassā ti purisassa. Suddhī ti vodānatā. Ettha hi mohantarābhāvena sabbadosābhāvo, tena saṃsārakāraṇasamucchedo antimasarīradhāritā, ñāṇadassitāya sabbaguṇasambhavo. Tena anuttarā sambodhipatti, ito parañca pahātabbamadhigantabbaṃ vā natthi. Tenāha “ettāvatā yakkhassa suddhī” ti.

Evaṃ vutte brāhmaṇo bhiyyosomattāya Bhagavati pasanno pasannākāraṃ karonto āha “hutañ ca mayhan” ti. Tass’attho yam ahaṃ ito pubbe brahmānaṃ ārabbha aggimhi ajuhaṃ, taṃ me hutaṃ saccaṃ vā hoti alikaṃ vā ti na jānāmi, ajja pana idaṃ hutañ ca mayhaṃ hutam atthu saccaṃ, saccahutam eva atthū ti yācanto bhaṇati. Yaṃ tādisaṃ vedagunaṃ alatthaṃ, yasmā idh’eva ṭhito bhavantarūpaṃ vedaguṃ alatthaṃ. Brahmā hi sakkhi, paccakkham eva hi tvaṃ brahmā, yato paṭiggaṇhātu me Bhagavā, paṭiggahetvā ca bhuñjatu me Bhagavā pūraḷāsan ti taṃ habyasesaṃ upanāmento āha.

Tato brāhmaṇo “ayaṃ attanā na icchati, kam pi c’aññaṃ sandhāya ‘kevalinaṃ mahesiṃ khīṇāsavaṃ kukkuccavūpasantaṃ annena pānena upaṭṭhahassū’ ti bhaṇatī” ti evaṃ gāthāya atthaṃ asallakkhetvā taṃ ñātukāmo āha “sādhāhaṃ Bhagavā” ti.

Tattha sādhū ti āyācanatthe nipāto. Tathā ti yena tvam āha, tena pakārena. Vijaññan ti jāneyyaṃ. Yan ti yaṃ dakkhiṇeyyaṃ. Yaññakāle pariyesamāno upaṭṭhaheyyan ti pāṭhaseso. Pappuyyā ti patvā. Tava sāsanan ti tava ovādaṃ.

Idaṃ vuttaṃ hoti. Sādhāhaṃ Bhagavā tava ovādaṃ āgamma tathā vijaññaṃ ārocehi me taṃ kevalinan ti adhippāyo. Yo dakkhiṇaṃ bhuñjeyya mādisassa, yaṃ cāhaṃ yaññakāle pariyesamāno upaṭṭhaheyyaṃ, tathārūpaṃ me dakkhiṇeyyaṃ dassehi, sace tvaṃ na bhuñjasī ti.

Ath’assa Bhagavā pākaṭena nayena tathārūpaṃ dakkhiṇeyyaṃ dassento “sārambhā yassā” ti gāthāttayam āha.

Tattha sīmantānaṃ vinetāran ti sīmā ti mariyādā sādhujanavutti, tassā antā pariyosānā aparabhāgā ti katvā sīmantā vuccanti kilesā, tesaṃ vinetāran ti attho. Sīmantā ti buddhaveneyyā sekkhā ca puthujjanā ca, tesaṃ vinetāran ti pi eke. Jātimaraṇakovidan ti “evaṃ jāti evaṃ maraṇan” ti ettha kusalaṃ. Moneyyasampannan ti paññāsampannaṃ, kāyamoneyyādi-sampannaṃ vā.

Bhakuṭiṃ vinayitvānā ti yaṃ ekacce dubbuddhino yācakaṃ disvā bhakuṭiṃ karonti, taṃ vinayitvā, pasannamukhā hutvā ti attho. Pañjalikā ti paggahita-añjalino hutvā.

Atha brāhmaṇo Bhagavantaṃ thomayamāno “buddho bhavan” ti gātham āha. Tattha āyāgo ti āyajitabbo, tato tato āgamma vā yajitabbam etthā ti pi āyāgo, deyyadhammānaṃ adhiṭṭhānabhūto ti vuttaṃ hoti.

Sesam ettha ito purimagāthāsu ca yaṃ na vaṇṇitaṃ, taṃ sakkā avaṇṇitam pi jānitun ti uttānatthattā yeva na vaṇṇitaṃ. Ito paraṃ pana Kasibhāradvājasutte vuttanayam evā ti.
