Animittan ti Sallasuttaṃ. Kā uppatti? Bhagavato kira upaṭṭhāko eko upāsako, tassa putto kālam akāsi. So puttasokābhibhūto sattāhaṃ nirāhāro ahosi. Taṃ anukampanto Bhagavā tassa gharaṃ gantvā sokavinodanatthaṃ imaṃ suttam abhāsi.
Tattha animattan ti kiriyākāra-nimitta-virahitaṃ. Yathā hi “yadāhaṃ akkhiṃ vā nikhaṇissāmi, bhamukaṃ vā ukkhipissāmi, tena nimittena taṃ bhaṇḍaṃ avaharā” ti ādīsu kiriyākāra-nimittam atthi, na evaṃ jīvite. Na hi sakkā laddhuṃ “yāvāhaṃ idaṃ vā idaṃ vā karomi, tāva tvaṃ jīva, mā mīyā” ti. Anaññātan ti ato eva na sakkā ekaṃsena aññātuṃ “ettakaṃ vā ettakaṃ vā kālaṃ iminā jīvitabban” ti gatiyā āyupariyantavasena vā. Yathā hi Cātumahārājikādīnaṃ parimitaṃ āyu, na tathā maccānaṃ, evam pi ekaṃsena anaññātaṃ.
Kasiran ti aneka-paccaya-paṭibaddha-vutti-bhāvato kicchaṃ na sukhayāpanīyaṃ. Tathā hi taṃ assāsa-paṭibaddhañ ca, passāsa-paṭibaddhañ ca, mahābhūta-paṭibaddhañ ca, kabaḷīkārāhāra-paṭibaddhañ ca, usmā-paṭibaddhañ ca, viññāṇa-paṭibaddhañ ca. Anassasanto pi hi na jīvati apassasanto pi. Catūsu ca dhātūsu kaṭṭhamukhādi-āsīvisadaṭṭho viya kāyo pathavīdhātuppakopena tāva thaddho hoti kaliṅgarasadiso. Yathāha
“Patthaddho bhavatī kāyo, daṭṭho kaṭṭhamukhena vā,
pathavīdhātuppakopena, hoti kaṭṭhamukhe va so” ti. (dha. sa. aṭṭha. 584)
Āpodhātuppakopena pūtibhāvaṃ āpajjitvā paggharita-pubba-maṃsa-lohito aṭṭhicammāvaseso hoti. Yathāha
“Pūtiko bhavatī kāyo, daṭṭho pūtimukhena vā,
āpodhātuppakopena, hoti pūtimukhe va so” ti. (dha. sa. aṭṭha. 584)
Tejodhātuppakopena aṅgārakāsuyaṃ pakkhitto viya samantā pariḍayhati. Yathāha
“Santatto bhavatī kāyo, daṭṭho aggimukhena vā,
tejodhātuppakopena, hoti aggimukhe va so” ti. (dha. sa. aṭṭha. 584)
Vāyodhātuppakopena sañchijjamāna-sandhi-bandhano pāsāṇehi koṭṭetvā sañcuṇṇiyamānaṭṭhiko viya ca hoti. Yathāha
“Sañchinno bhavatī kāyo, daṭṭho satthamukhena vā,
vāyodhātuppakopena, hoti satthamukhe va so” ti. (dha. sa. aṭṭha. 584)
Dhātuppakopabyāpannakāyo pi ca na jīvati. Yadā pana tā dhātuyo aññamaññaṃ patiṭṭhānādikiccaṃ sādhentā pi samaṃ vahanti, tadā jīvitaṃ pavattati. Evaṃ mahābhūta-paṭibaddhañ ca jīvitaṃ.
Dubbhikkhādīsu pana āhārupacchedena sattānaṃ jīvitakkhayo pākaṭo eva, evaṃ kabaḷīkārāhāra-paṭibaddhañ ca jīvitaṃ. Tathā asitapītādi-paripāke kammajateje khīṇe sattā jīvitakkhayaṃ pāpuṇantā pi pākaṭā eva, evaṃ usmā-paṭibaddhañ ca jīvitaṃ. Viññāṇe pana niruddhe niruddhato pabhuti sattānaṃ na hoti jīvitan ti evam pi loke pākaṭam eva, evaṃ viññāṇa-paṭibaddhañ ca jīvitaṃ. Evaṃ aneka-paccaya-paṭibaddha-vutti-bhāvato kasiraṃ veditabbaṃ.
Parittañ cā ti appakaṃ, devānaṃ jīvitaṃ upanidhāya tiṇagge ussāvabindusadisaṃ, cittakkhaṇato uddhaṃ abhāvena vā parittaṃ. Atidīghāyuko pi hi satto atītena cittena jīvittha na jīvati na jīvissati, anāgatena jīvissati na jīvati na jīvittha, paccuppannena jīvati na jīvittha na jīvissati. Vuttañ c’etaṃ
“Jīvitaṃ attabhāvo ca, sukhadukkhā ca kevalā,
ekacittasamāyuttā, lahuso vattate khaṇo.
“Cullāsītisahassāni, kappā tiṭṭhanti ye marū,
na tv eva te pi jīvanti, dvīhi cittehi saṃyutā” ti. (mahāni. 10),
Tañ ca dukkhena saṃyutan ti tañ ca jīvitaṃ evaṃ animittam anaññātaṃ kasiraṃ parittañ ca samānam pi sītuṇha-ḍaṃsa-makasādi-samphassa-khuppipāsā-saṅkhāradukkha-vipariṇāmadukkha-dukkhadukkhehi saṃyutaṃ. Kiṃ vuttaṃ hoti? Yasmā īdisaṃ maccānaṃ jīvitaṃ, tasmā tvaṃ yāva taṃ parikkhayaṃ na gacchati, tāva dhammacariyam eva brūhaya, mā puttam anusocā ti.

Athāpi maññeyyāsi “sabbūpakaraṇehi puttaṃ anurakkhantassāpi me so mato, tena socāmī” ti, evam pi mā soci. Na hi so upakkamo atthi, yena jātā na miyyare, na hi sakkā kenaci upakkamena jātā sattā mā marantū ti rakkhitun ti vuttaṃ hoti. Tato yasmā so “jaraṃ patvā nāma, bhante, maraṇaṃ anurūpaṃ, atidaharo me putto mato” ti cintesi, tasmā āha “jaram pi patvā maraṇaṃ, evaṃdhammā hi pāṇino” ti, jaraṃ patvā pi appatvā pi maraṇaṃ, natthi ettha niyamo ti vuttaṃ hoti.

Idāni tam atthaṃ nidassanena sādhento “phalānam iva pakkānan” ti ādim āha. Tass’attho: yathā phalānaṃ pakkānaṃ yasmā sūriyuggamanato pabhuti sūriyātapena santappamāne rukkhe pathaviraso ca āporaso ca pattato sākhaṃ sākhato khandhaṃ khandhato mūlan ti evaṃ anukkamena mūlato pathavim eva pavisati, ogamanato pabhuti pana pathavito mūlaṃ mūlato khandhan ti evaṃ anukkamena sākhā-patta-pallavādīni puna ārohati, evaṃ ārohanto ca paripākagate phale vaṇṭamūlaṃ na pavisati. Atha sūriyātapena tappamāne vaṇṭamūle pariḷāho uppajjati, tena tāni phalāni pāto pāto niccakālaṃ patanti, nesaṃ pāto patanato bhayaṃ hoti, patanā bhayaṃ hotī ti attho. Evaṃ jātānaṃ maccānaṃ niccaṃ maraṇato bhayaṃ. Pakkaphalasadisā hi sattā ti.

Yasmā ca na pitā tāyate puttaṃ, ñātī vā pana ñātake, tasmā pekkhataṃ yeva…pe… nīyati. Tattha ayaṃ yojanā: passamānānaṃ yeva ñātīnaṃ “amma, tātā” ti ādinā nayena puthu anekappakārakaṃ lālapataṃ yeva maccānaṃ ekameko macco yathā go vajjho evaṃ nīyati, evaṃ passa, upāsaka, yāva atāṇo loko ti.

Tattha ye buddha-paccekabuddhādayo dhitisampannā, te “evam abbhāhato loko maccunā ca jarāya ca, so na sakkā kenaci parittāṇaṃ kātun” ti yasmā jānanti, tasmā dhīrā na socanti viditvā lokapariyāyaṃ, imaṃ lokasabhāvaṃ ñatvā na socantī ti vuttaṃ hoti.

Tvaṃ pana yassa maggaṃ…pe… paridevasi. Kiṃ vuttaṃ hoti? Yassa mātukucchiṃ āgatassa āgatamaggaṃ vā ito cavitvā aññattha gatassa gatamaggaṃ vā na jānāsi, tassa ime ubho ante asampassaṃ niratthaṃ paridevasi. Dhīrā pana te passantā viditvā lokapariyāyaṃ na socantī ti.

Idāni “niratthaṃ paridevasī” ti ettha vuttaparidevanāya niratthakabhāvaṃ sādhento “paridevayamāno ce” ti ādim āha. Tattha udabbahe ti ubbaheyya dhāreyya, attani sañjaneyyā ti attho. Sammūḷho hiṃsam attānan ti sammūḷho hutvā attānaṃ bādhento. Kayirā ce naṃ vicakkhaṇo ti yadi tādiso kañci atthaṃ udabbahe, vicakkhaṇo pi naṃ paridevaṃ kareyya.

Na hi ruṇṇenā ti etthāyaṃ yojanā: na pana koci ruṇṇena vā sokena vā cetaso santiṃ pappoti, api ca kho pana rodato socato ca bhiyyo assa uppajjate dukkhaṃ, sarīrañ ca dubbaṇṇiyādīhi upahaññatī ti.

Na tena petā ti tena paridevanena kālakatā na pālenti na yāpenti, na taṃ tesaṃ upakārāya hoti. Tasmā niratthā paridevanā ti.

Na kevalañ ca niratthā, anattham pi āvahati. Kasmā? Yasmā sokam appajahaṃ…pe… vasam anvagū. Tattha anutthunanto ti anusocanto. Vasam anvagū ti vasaṃ gato.

Evam pi niratthakattaṃ anatthāvahattañ ca sokassa dassetvā idāni sokavinayatthaṃ ovadanto “aññe pi passā” ti ādim āha. Tattha gamine ti gamike, paraloka-gamana-sajje ṭhite ti vuttaṃ hoti. Phandante v’idha pāṇino ti maraṇabhayena phandamāne yeva idha satte.

Yena yenā ti yenākārena maññanti “dīghāyuko bhavissati, arogo bhavissatī” ti, tato taṃ aññathā yeva hoti, so evaṃ maññito marati pi, rogī pi hoti. Etādiso ayaṃ vinābhāvo maññitappaccanīkena hoti, passa, upāsaka, lokasabhāvan ti evam ettha adhippāya-yojanā veditabbā.

Arahato sutvā ti imaṃ evarūpaṃ arahato dhammadesanaṃ sutvā. N’eso labbhā mayā itī ti so peto “idāni mayā puna jīvatū” ti na labbhā iti parijānanto, vineyya paridevitan ti vuttaṃ hoti.

Kiñ ca bhiyyo “yathā saraṇam ādittaṃ…pe… dhaṃsaye” ti. Tattha dhīro dhitisampadāya, sapañño sābhāvika-paññāya, paṇḍito bāhusacca-paññāya, kusalo cintaka-jātikatāya veditabbo. Cintāmaya-sutamaya-bhāvanāmaya-paññāhi vā yojetabbaṃ.

Na kevalañ ca sokam eva, “paridevaṃ…pe… sallam attano”. Tattha pajappan ti taṇhaṃ. Domanassan ti cetasika-dukkhaṃ. Abbahe ti uddhare. Sallan ti etam eva tippakāraṃ dunnīharaṇaṭṭhena antovijjhanaṭṭhena ca sallaṃ, pubbe vuttaṃ sattavidhaṃ rāgādisallaṃ vā.

Etasmiñ hi abbūḷhe salle “abbūḷhasallo…pe… nibbuto” ti arahattanikūṭena desanaṃ niṭṭhāpesi. Tattha asito ti taṇhādiṭṭhīhi anissito. Pappuyyā ti pāpuṇitvā. Sesaṃ idha ito pubbe vuttattā uttānattham eva, tasmā na vaṇṇitaṃ.
