Ānandajāte ti Nālakasuttaṃ. Kā uppatti? Padumuttarassa kira Bhagavato sāvakaṃ moneyyapaṭipadaṃ paṭipannaṃ disvā tathattaṃ abhikaṅkhamāno tato pabhuti kappasatasahassaṃ pāramiyo pūretvā Asitassa isino bhāgineyyo Nālako nāma tāpaso Bhagavantaṃ dhammacakka-ppavattita-divasato sattame divase “aññātam etan” ti ādīhi dvīhi gāthāhi moneyyapaṭipadaṃ pucchi. Tassa Bhagavā “moneyyaṃ te upaññissan” ti ādinā nayena taṃ byākāsi. Parinibbute pana Bhagavati saṅgītiṃ karonten’āyasmatā Mahākassapena āyasmā Ānando tam eva moneyyapaṭipadaṃ puṭṭho, yena yadā ca samādapito Nālako Bhagavantaṃ pucchi, taṃ sabbaṃ pākaṭaṃ katvā dassetukāmo “ānandajāte” ti ādikā vīsati vatthugāthāyo vatvā abhāsi. Taṃ sabbam pi “Nālakasuttan” ti vuccati.
Tattha ānandajāte ti samiddhijāte vuddhippatte. Patīte ti tuṭṭhe. Atha vā ānandajāte ti pamudite, patīte ti somanassajāte. Sucivasane ti akiliṭṭhavasane. Devānañ hi kapparukkhanibbattāni vasanāni rajaṃ vā malaṃ vā na gaṇhanti. Dussaṃ gahetvā ti idha dussa-sadisattā “dussan” ti laddhavohāraṃ dibbavatthaṃ ukkhipitvā. Asito isī ti kaṇhasarīravaṇṇattā evaṃladdhanāmo isi. Divāvihāre ti divāvihāraṭṭhāne. Sesaṃ padato uttānam eva.
Sambandhato pana ayaṃ kira Suddhodanassa pitu Sīhahanurañño purohito Suddhodanassa pi anabhisittakāle sippācariyo hutvā abhisittakāle purohito yeva ahosi. Tassa sāyaṃ pātaṃ rājupaṭṭhānaṃ āgatassa rājā daharakāle viya nipaccakāraṃ akatvā añjalikammamattam eva karoti. Dhammatā kir’esā pattābhisekānaṃ Sakyarājūnaṃ. Purohito tena nibbijjitvā “pabbajjām’ahaṃ mahārājā” ti āha. Rājā tassa nicchayaṃ ñatvā “tena hi, ācariya, mam eva uyyāne vasitabbaṃ, yathā te ahaṃ abhiṇhaṃ passeyyan” ti yāci. So “evaṃ hotū” ti paṭissuṇitvā tāpasapabbajjaṃ pabbajitvā raññā upaṭṭhahiyamāno uyyāne yeva vasanto kasiṇaparikammaṃ katvā aṭṭha samāpattiyo pañcābhiññāyo ca nibbattesi.
So tato pabhuti rājakule bhattakiccaṃ katvā Himavanta-Cātumahārājika-bhavanādīnaṃ aññataraṃ gantvā divāvihāraṃ karoti. Ath’ekadivasaṃ Tāvatiṃsabhavanaṃ gantvā ratanavimānaṃ pavisitvā dibbaratanapallaṅke nisinno samādhisukhaṃ anubhavitvā sāyanhasamayaṃ vuṭṭhāya vimānadvāre ṭhatvā ito c’ito ca vilokento saṭṭhiyojanāya mahāvīthiyā celukkhepaṃ katvā bodhisatta-guṇa-pasaṃsitāni thutivacanāni vatvā kīḷante Sakkappamukhe deve addasa. Tenāha āyasmā Ānando “ānandajāte…pe… divāvihāre” ti.

Tato so evaṃ “disvāna deve…pe… kiṃ paṭicca”. Tattha udagge ti abbhunnatakāye. Cittiṃ karitvānā ti ādaraṃ katvā. Kalyarūpo ti tuṭṭharūpo. Sesaṃ uttānattham eva.

Idāni “yadā pi āsī” ti ādigāthā uttānasambandhā eva. Padattho pana paṭhamagāthāya tāva saṅgamo ti saṅgāmo. Jayo surānan ti devānaṃ jayo. Tassāvibhāvatthaṃ ayam anupubbikathā veditabbā: Sakko kira Magadharaṭṭhe Macalagāmavāsī tettiṃsa-manussa-seṭṭho Magho nāma māṇavo hutvā satta vattapadāni pūretvā Tāvatiṃsabhavane nibbatti saddhiṃ parisāya. Tato pubbadevā “āgantuka-devaputtā āgatā, sakkāraṃ nesaṃ karissāmā” ti vatvā dibbapadumāni upanāmesuṃ, upaḍḍharajjena ca nimantesuṃ. Sakko upaḍḍharajjena asantuṭṭho sakaparisaṃ saññāpetvā ekadivasaṃ surāmadamatte te pāde gahetvā Sinerupabbatapāde khipi.
Tesaṃ Sinerussa heṭṭhimatale dasasahassa-yojanaṃ asurabhavanaṃ nibbatti pāricchattaka-paṭicchannabhūtāya citrapāṭaliyā upasobhitaṃ. Tato te satiṃ paṭilabhitvā Tāvatiṃsabhavanaṃ apassantā “aho re naṭṭhā mayaṃ pānamadadosena, na dāni mayaṃ suraṃ pivimhā, asuraṃ pivimhā, na dāni’mhā surā, asurā dāni jāt’amhā” ti. Tato pabhuti “asurā” icc eva uppannasamaññā hutvā “handa dāni devehi saddhiṃ saṅgāmemā” ti Sineruṃ parito ārohiṃsu.
Tato Sakko asure yuddhena abbhuggantvā puna pi samudde pakkhipitvā catūsu dvāresu attanā sadisaṃ Indapaṭimaṃ māpetvā ṭhapesi. Tato asurā “appamatto vatāyaṃ Sakko niccaṃ rakkhanto tiṭṭhatī” ti cintetvā punad eva nagaraṃ agamiṃsu. Tato devā attano jayaṃ ghosentā mahāvīthiyaṃ celukkhepaṃ karontā nakkhattaṃ kīḷiṃsu.
Atha Asito atītānāgate cattālīsakappe anussarituṃ samatthatāya “kiṃ nu kho imehi pubbe pi evaṃ kīḷitapubban” ti āvajjento taṃ devāsurasaṅgāme devavijayaṃ disvā āha
“Yadā pi āsī asurehi saṅgamo, jayo surānaṃ asurā parājitā,
tadā pi n’etādiso lomahaṃsano” ti.
tasmim pi kāle etādiso lomahaṃsano pamodo na āsi. Kim abbhutaṃ daṭṭhu marū pamoditā ti ajja pana kiṃ abbhutaṃ disvā evaṃ devā pamuditā ti.

Dutiyagāthāya seḷentī ti mukhena usseḷanasaddaṃ muñcanti. Gāyanti nānāvidhāni gītāni, vādayanti aṭṭhasaṭṭhi tūriyasahassāni. Phoṭentī ti apphoṭenti. Pucchāmi vo’han ti attanā āvajjetvā ñātuṃ samattho pi tesaṃ vacanaṃ sotukāmatāya pucchati. Merumuddhavāsine ti Sinerumuddhani vasante. Sinerussa hi heṭṭhimatale dasayojana-sahassaṃ asurabhavanaṃ, majjhimatale dvisahassa-parittadīpa-parivārā cattāro mahādīpā, uparimatale dasayojana-sahassaṃ Tāvatiṃsabhavanaṃ, tasmā devā “merumuddhavāsino” ti vuccanti. Mārisā ti deve āmanteti, nidukkhā nirābādhā ti vuttaṃ hoti.

Ath’assa tam atthaṃ ārocentehi devehi vuttāya tatiyagāthāya bodhisatto ti bujjhanakasatto, sammāsambodhiṃ gantuṃ araho satto. Ratanavaro ti vararatanabhūto. Tena’mha tuṭṭhā ti tena kāraṇena mayaṃ tuṭṭhā. So hi buddhattaṃ patvā tathā dhammaṃ desessati, yathā mayañ ca aññe ca devagaṇā sekkhāsekkhabhūmiṃ pāpuṇissāma, manussā pi’ssa dhammaṃ sutvā ye na sakkhissanti parinibbātuṃ, te dānādīni katvā devaloke paripūressantī ti ayaṃ kira nesaṃ adhippāyo. Tattha “tuṭṭhā kalyarūpā” ti kiñcāpi idaṃ padadvayaṃ atthato abhinnaṃ, tathā pi “kim abbhutaṃ daṭṭhu marū pamoditā, kiṃ devasaṅgho atiriva kalyarūpo” ti imassa pañhadvayassa vissajjanatthaṃ vuttan ti veditabbaṃ.

Idāni yena adhippāyena bodhisatte jāte tuṭṭhā ahesuṃ, taṃ āvikarontehi vuttāya catutthagāthāya sattaggahaṇena devamanussaggahaṇaṃ, pajāgahaṇena sesagatiggahaṇaṃ, evaṃ dvīhi padehi pañcasu pi gatīsu seṭṭhabhāvaṃ dasseti. Tiracchānā pi hi sīhādayo asantāsādi-guṇa-yuttā, te pi ayam eva atiseti, tasmā “pajānam uttamo” ti vutto. Devamanussesu pana ye attahitāya paṭipannādayo cattāro puggalā, tesu ubhayahita-paṭipanno aggapuggalo ayaṃ, naresu ca usabha-sadisattā narāsabho, ten’assa thutiṃ bhaṇantā idam pi padadvayam āhaṃsu.

Pañcamagāthāya taṃ saddan ti taṃ devehi vuttavacanasaddaṃ. Avasarī ti otari. Tada bhavanan ti tadā bhavanaṃ.

Chaṭṭhagāthāya tato ti Asitassa vacanato anantaraṃ. Ukkāmukhe vā ti ukkāmukhe eva, mūsāmukhe ti vuttaṃ hoti. Sukusala-sampahaṭṭhan ti sukusalena suvaṇṇakārena saṅghaṭṭitaṃ, saṅghaṭṭentena tāpitan ti adhippāyo. Daddallamānan ti vijjotamānaṃ. Asitavhayassā ti Asitanāmassa dutiyena nāmena Kaṇhadevilassa isino.

Sattamagāthāya tārāsabhaṃ vā ti tārānaṃ usabhasadisaṃ, candan ti adhippāyo. Visuddhan ti abbhādi-upakkilesa-rahitaṃ. Saradarivā ti sarade iva. Ānandajāto ti savanamatten’eva uppannāya pītiyā pītijāto. Alattha pītin ti disvā puna pi pītiṃ labhi.

Tato paraṃ bodhisattassa devehi sadā payujjamāna-sakkāra-dīpanatthaṃ vutta-aṭṭhamagāthāya anekasākhan ti anekasalākaṃ. Sahassamaṇḍalan ti rattasuvaṇṇamaya-sahassamaṇḍala-yuttaṃ. Chattan ti dibbasetacchattaṃ. Vītipatantī ti sarīraṃ bījamānā patanuppatanaṃ karonti.

Navamagāthāya jaṭī ti jaṭilo. Kaṇhasirivhayo ti kaṇhasaddena ca sirisaddena ca avhayamāno. Taṃ kira “Sirikaṇho” ti pi avhayanti āmantenti, ālapantī ti vuttaṃ hoti. Paṇḍukambale ti rattakambale. Adhikārato c’ettha “kumāran” ti vattabbaṃ, pāṭhaseso vā kātabbo.
Purimagāthāya ca ahatthapāsagataṃ sandhāya “disvā” ti vuttaṃ, idha pana hatthapāsagataṃ paṭiggahaṇatthaṃ upanītaṃ, tasmā puna vacanaṃ “disvā” ti. Purimaṃ vā dassana-pīti-lābhāpekkhaṃ gāthāvasāne “vipulam alattha pītin” ti vacanato, idaṃ paṭiggahāpekkhaṃ avasāne “sumano paṭiggahe” ti vacanato. Purimañ ca kumāra-sambandham eva, idaṃ setacchatta-sambandham pi.
Disvā ti satasahassagghanake Gandhārarattakambale suvaṇṇanikkhaṃ viya kumāraṃ “chattaṃ marū” ti ettha vuttappakāraṃ setacchattaṃ dhāriyantaṃ muddhani disvā. Keci pana “idaṃ mānusakaṃ chattaṃ sandhāya vuttan” ti bhaṇanti. Yath’eva hi devā, evaṃ manussā pi chatta-cāmara-morahattha-tālavaṇṭa-vāḷabījani-hatthā mahāpurisaṃ upagacchantī ti. Evaṃ sante pi na tassa vacanena koci pi atisayo atthi, tasmā yathāvuttam eva sundaraṃ.
Paṭiggahe ti ubhohi hatthehi paṭiggahesi. Isiṃ kira vandāpetuṃ kumāraṃ upanesuṃ, ath’assa pādā parivattitvā isissa matthake patiṭṭhahiṃsu. So tam pi acchariyaṃ disvā udaggacitto sumano paṭiggahesi.

Dasamagāthāyaṃ jigīsako ti jigīsanto magganto pariyesanto, upaparikkhanto ti vuttaṃ hoti. Lakkhaṇamantapāragū ti lakkhaṇānaṃ vedānañ ca pāraṃ gato. Anuttarāyan ti anuttaro ayaṃ. So kira attano abhimukhāgatesu mahāsattassa pādatalesu cakkāni disvā tadanusārena sesalakkhaṇāni jigīsanto sabbaṃ lakkhaṇasampattiṃ disvā “addhāyaṃ buddho bhavissatī” ti ñatvā evam āha.

Ekādasāyaṃ ath’attano gamanan ti paṭisandhivasena arūpagamanaṃ. Akalyarūpo gaḷayati assukānī ti taṃ attano arūpūpapattiṃ anussaritvā “na dānāhaṃ assa dhammadesanaṃ sotuṃ lacchāmī” ti atuṭṭharūpo balava-sokābhibhavena domanassajāto hutvā assūni pāteti gaḷayati, “garayatī” ti pi pāṭho.
“Yadi pan’esa rūpabhave cittaṃ nameyya, kiṃ tattha na uppajjeyya, yen’evaṃ rodatī” ti? Na na uppajjeyya, akusalatāya pan’etaṃ vidhiṃ na jānāti.
“Evaṃ sante pi domanassuppatti yev’assa ayuttā samāpattilābhena vikkhambhitattā” ti ce? Na, vikkhambhitattā eva. Maggabhāvanāya samucchinnā hi kilesā na uppajjanti, samāpattilābhīnaṃ pana balavapaccayena uppajjanti.
“Uppanne kilese parihīnajjhānattā kut’assa arūpagamanan” ti ce? Appakasirena punādhigamato. Samāpattilābhino hi uppanne kilese balavavītikkamaṃ anāpajjantā vūpasantamatte yeva kilesavege puna taṃ visesaṃ appakasiren’evādhigacchanti, “parihīnavisesā ime” ti pi duviññeyyā honti, tādiso ca eso.
No ce kumāre bhavissati antarāyo ti na bhavissati nu kho imasmiṃ kumāre antarāyo.

Dvādasāyaṃ na orak’āyan ti ayaṃ orako paritto na hoti. Uttaragāthāya vattabbaṃ buddhabhāvaṃ sandhāyāha.

Terasāyaṃ sambodhiyaggan ti sabbaññutaññāṇaṃ. Tañ hi aviparītabhāvena sammā bujjhanato sambodhi, katthaci āvaraṇābhāvena sabbañāṇuttamato “aggan” ti vuccati. Phusissatī ti pāpuṇissati. Paramavisuddhadassī ti nibbānadassī. Tañ hi ekantavisuddhattā paramavisuddhaṃ. Vitthārik’assā ti vitthārikaṃ assa. Brahmacariyan ti sāsanaṃ.

Cuddasāyaṃ ath’antarā ti antarā yeva assa, sambodhippattito orato evā ti vuttaṃ hoti. Na sossan ti na suṇissaṃ. Asamadhurassā ti asamavīriyassa. Aṭṭo ti āturo, byasanaṃ gato ti sukhavināsaṃ patto, aghāvī ti dukkhito, sabbaṃ domanassuppādam eva sandhāyāha. Domanassena hi so āturo, tañ c’assa sukhabyasanato byasanaṃ, sukhavināsanato ti vuttaṃ hoti, tena ca so cetasika-agha-bhūtena aghāvī.

Pannarasāyaṃ vipulaṃ janetvānā ti vipulaṃ janetvā, ayam eva vā pāṭho. Niggamā ti niggato. Evaṃ niggato ca so bhāgineyyaṃ sayan ti sakaṃ bhāgineyyaṃ, attano bhaginiyā puttan ti vuttaṃ hoti, samādapesī ti attano appāyukabhāvaṃ ñatvā kaniṭṭhabhaginiyā ca puttassa Nālakassa māṇavakassa upacitapuññataṃ attano balena ñatvā “vuḍḍhippatto pamādam pi āpajjeyyā” ti naṃ anukampamāno bhaginiyā gharaṃ gantvā “kahaṃ Nālako” ti. “Bahi, bhante, kīḷatī” ti. “Ānetha nan” ti āṇāpetvā taṅkhaṇaṃ yeva tāpasapabbajjaṃ pabbājetvā samādapesi ovadi anusāsi.

Kathaṃ? “Buddho ti ghosaṃ…pe… brahmacariyan” ti soḷasamagātham āha. Tattha yada parato ti yadā parato. Dhammamaggan ti paramadhammassa nibbānassa maggaṃ, dhammaṃ vā aggaṃ saha paṭipadāya nibbānaṃ. Tasmin ti tassa santike. Brahmacariyan ti samaṇadhammaṃ.

Sattarasāyaṃ tādinā ti tassaṇṭhitena, tasmiṃ samaye kilesavikkhambhane samādhilābhe ca sati vikkhambhita-kilesena samāhitacittena cā ti adhippāyo. Anāgate paramavisuddhadassinā ti “ayaṃ Nālako anāgate kāle Bhagavato santike paramavisuddhaṃ nibbānaṃ passissatī” ti evaṃ diṭṭhattā so isi iminā pariyāyena “anāgate paramavisuddhadassī” ti vutto. Tena anāgate paramavisuddhadassinā. Upacitapuññasañcayo ti Padumuttarato pabhuti katapuññasañcayo. Patikkhan ti āgamayamāno. Parivasī ti pabbajitvā tāpasavesena vasi. Rakkhitindriyo ti rakkhitasotindriyo hutvā. So kira tato pabhuti udake na nimujji “udakaṃ pavisitvā sotindriyaṃ vināseyya, tato dhammassavanabāhiro bhaveyyan” ti cintetvā.

Aṭṭhārasāyaṃ sutvāna ghosan ti so Nālako evaṃ parivasanto, anupubbena Bhagavatā sambodhiṃ patvā Bārāṇasiyaṃ dhammacakke pavattite, taṃ “Bhagavatā dhammacakkaṃ pavattitaṃ, sammāsambuddho vata so Bhagavā uppanno” ti ādinā nayena jinavaracakkavattane pavattaghosaṃ, attano atthakāmāhi devatāhi āgantvā ārocitaṃ sutvā. Gantvāna disvā isinisabhan ti sattāhaṃ devatāhi moneyyakolāhale kayiramāne sattame divase Isipatanaṃ gantvā “Nālako āgamissati, tassa dhammaṃ desessāmī” ti iminā ca abhisandhinā varabuddhāsane nisinnaṃ disvā nisabhasadisaṃ isinisabhaṃ Bhagavantaṃ. Pasanno ti saha dassanen’eva pasannacitto hutvā. Moneyyaseṭṭhan ti ñāṇuttamaṃ, maggañāṇan ti vuttaṃ hoti. Samāgate Asitāvhayassa sāsane ti Asitassa isino ovādakāle anuppatte. Tena hi “yadā vivarati dhammamaggaṃ, tadā gantvā samayaṃ paripucchamāno carassu tasmiṃ Bhagavati brahmacariyan” ti anusiṭṭho, ayañ ca so kālo. Tena vuttaṃ “samāgate Asitāvhayassa sāsane” ti. Sesam ettha pākaṭam eva.

Pucchāgāthādvaye aññātam etan ti viditaṃ mayā etaṃ. Yathātathan ti aviparītaṃ. Ko adhippāyo? Yaṃ Asito “sambodhiyaggaṃ phusissatāyaṃ kumāro” ti ñatvā “buddho ti ghosaṃ yada parato suṇosi, sambodhippatto vivarati dhammamaggan” ti maṃ avaca, tad etaṃ mayā Asitassa vacanaṃ ajja Bhagavantaṃ sakkhiṃ disvā “yathātatham evā” ti aññātan ti. Taṃ tan ti tasmā taṃ. Sabbadhammāna pāragun ti Hemavatasutte vuttanayena chahi ākārehi sabbadhammānaṃ pāragataṃ.

Anagāriy’upetassā ti anagāriyaṃ upetassa, pabbajitassā ti attho. Bhikkhācariyaṃ jigīsato ti ariyehi āciṇṇaṃ anupakkiliṭṭhaṃ bhikkhācariyaṃ pariyesamānassa. Moneyyan ti munīnaṃ santakaṃ. Uttamaṃ padan ti uttamapaṭipadaṃ. Sesam ettha pākaṭam eva.

Ath’assa evaṃ puṭṭho Bhagavā “moneyyaṃ te upaññissan” ti ādinā nayena moneyyapaṭipadaṃ byākāsi. Tattha upaññissan ti upaññāpeyyaṃ, vivareyyaṃ paññāpeyyan ti attho. Dukkaraṃ durabhisambhavan ti kātuñ ca dukkhaṃ kayiramānañ ca sambhavituṃ sahituṃ dukkhan ti vuttaṃ hoti. Ayaṃ pan’ettha adhippāyo: ahaṃ te moneyyaṃ paññāpeyyaṃ, yadi naṃ kātuṃ vā abhisambhotuṃ vā sukhaṃ bhaveyya, evaṃ pana dukkaraṃ durabhisambhavaṃ puthujjanakālato pabhuti kiliṭṭhacittaṃ anuppādetvā paṭipajjitabbato. Tathā hi naṃ ekassa buddhassa eko va sāvako karoti ca sambhoti cā ti.
Evaṃ Bhagavā moneyyassa dukkarabhāvaṃ durabhisambhavatañ ca dassento Nālakassa ussāhaṃ janetvā tam assa vattukāmo āha “handa te naṃ pavakkhāmi, santhambhassu daḷho bhavā” ti. Tattha handā ti byavasāyatthe nipāto. Te naṃ pavakkhāmī ti tuyhaṃ taṃ moneyyaṃ pavakkhāmi. Santhambhassū ti dukkara-karaṇa-samatthena vīriyūpatthambhena attānaṃ upatthambhaya. Daḷho bhavā ti durabhisambhava-sahana-samatthāya asithila-parakkamatāya thiro hoti. Kiṃ vuttaṃ hoti? Yasmā tvaṃ upacitapuññasambhāro, tasmāhaṃ ekantabyavasito va hutvā evaṃ dukkaraṃ durabhisambhavam pi samānaṃ tuyhaṃ taṃ moneyyaṃ pavakkhāmi, santhambhassu daḷho bhavā ti.

Evaṃ paramasallekhaṃ moneyyavattaṃ vattukāmo Nālakaṃ santhambhane daḷhībhāve ca niyojetvā paṭhamaṃ tāva gāmūpanibaddha-kilesa-ppahānaṃ dassento “samānabhāgan” ti upaḍḍhagātham āha. Tattha samānabhāgan ti samabhāgaṃ ekasadisaṃ ninnānākaraṇaṃ. Akkuṭṭhavanditan ti akkosañ ca vandanañ ca.
Idāni yathā taṃ samānabhāgaṃ kayirati, taṃ upāyaṃ dassento “manopadosan” ti upaḍḍhagātham āha. Tass’attho akkuṭṭho manopadosaṃ rakkheyya, vandito santo anuṇṇato care, raññā pi vandito samāno “maṃ vandatī” ti uddhaccaṃ nāpajjeyya.

Idāni araññūpanibaddha-kilesa-ppahānaṃ dassento “uccāvacā” ti gātham āha. Tass’attho araññasaññite dāye pi iṭṭhāniṭṭhavasena uccāvacā nānappakārā ārammaṇā niccharanti, cakkhādīnaṃ āpātham āgacchanti, te ca kho aggisikhūpamā pariḷāhajanakaṭṭhena. Yathā vā ḍayhamāne vane aggisikhā nānappakāratāya uccāvacā niccharanti, sadhūmā pi vidhūmā pi nīlā pi pītā pi rattā pi khuddakā pi mahantā pi, evaṃ sīha-byaggha-manussāmanussa-vividhavihaṅgaviruta-puppha-phala-pallavādi-bheda-vasena nānappakāratāya dāye uccāvacā ārammaṇā niccharanti bhiṃsanakā pi rajanīyā pi dosanīyā pi mohanīyā pi. Tenāha “uccāvacā niccharanti, dāye aggisikhūpamā” ti.
Evaṃ niccharantesu ca uccāvacesu ārammaṇesu yā kāci uyyāna-vana-cārikaṃ gatā samānā pakatiyā vā vanacāriniyo kaṭṭhahārikādayo rahogataṃ disvā hasita-lapita-rudita-dunnivatthādīhi nāriyo muniṃ palobhenti, tā su taṃ mā palobhayuṃ, tā nāriyo taṃ mā palobhayuṃ, yathā na palobhenti, tathā karohī ti vuttaṃ hoti.

Evam assa Bhagavā gāme ca araññe ca paṭipattividhiṃ dassetvā idāni sīlasaṃvaraṃ dassento “virato methunā dhammā” ti gāthādvayam āha. Tattha hitvā kāme paropare ti methunadhammato avasese pi sundare ca asundare ca pañca kāmaguṇe hitvā. Tappahānena hi methunavirati susampannā hoti. Tenāha “hitvā kāme paropare” ti. Ayam ettha adhippāyo.

“Aviruddho” ti ādīni pana padāni “na haneyya, na ghātaye” ti ettha vuttāya pāṇātipātāveramaṇiyā sampattidassanatthaṃ vuttāni. Tatrāyaṃ saṅkhepavaṇṇanā: parapakkhiyesu pāṇesu aviruddho, attapakkhiyesu asāratto, sabbe pi sataṇha-nittaṇhatāya tasathāvare pāṇe jīvitukāmatāya amaritukāmatāya sukhakāmatāya dukkhapaṭikūlatāya ca “yathā ahaṃ tathā ete” ti attasamānatāya tesu virodhaṃ vinento, ten’eva pakārena “yathā ete tathā ahan” ti paresaṃ samānatāya ca attani anurodhaṃ vinento, evaṃ ubhayathā pi anurodha-virodha-vippahīno hutvā maraṇapaṭikūlatāya attānaṃ upamaṃ katvā pāṇesu ye keci tase vā thāvare vā pāṇe na haneyya sāhatthikādīhi payogehi, na ghātaye āṇattikādīhī ti.

Evam assa methunavirati-pāṇātipātavirati-mukhena saṅkhepato pātimokkhasaṃvarasīlaṃ vatvā “hitvā kāme” ti ādīhi indriyasaṃvarañ ca dassetvā idāni ājīvapārisuddhiṃ dassento “hitvā icchañ cā” ti ādim āha.
Tass’attho yāyaṃ taṇhā ekaṃ laddhā dutiyaṃ icchati, dve laddhā tatiyaṃ, satasahassaṃ laddhā tad uttarim pi icchatī ti evaṃ appaṭiladdhavisayaṃ icchanato “icchā” ti vuccati, yo cāyaṃ paṭiladdha-visaya-lubbhano lobho, taṃ hitvā icchañ ca lobhañ ca yattha satto puthujjano, yasmiṃ cīvarādi-paccaye tehi icchālobhehi puthujjano satto laggo paṭibaddho tiṭṭhati, tattha taṃ ubhayam pi hitvā paccayatthaṃ ājīvapārisuddhiṃ avirodhento ñāṇacakkhunā cakkhumā hutvā imaṃ moneyyapaṭipadaṃ paṭipajjeyya. Evañ hi paṭipanno tareyya narakaṃ imaṃ, duppūraṇaṭṭhena narakasaññitaṃ micchājīva-hetu-bhūtaṃ imaṃ paccayataṇhaṃ tareyya, imāya vā paṭipadāya tareyyā ti vuttaṃ hoti.

Evaṃ paccayataṇhā-pahāna-mukhena ājīvapārisuddhiṃ dassetvā idāni bhojane mattaññutā-mukhena paccaya-paribhoga-sīlaṃ tadanusārena ca yāva arahattappatti tāva paṭipadaṃ dassento “ūnūdaro” ti gātham āha.
Tass’attho dhammena samena laddhesu itarītaracīvarādīsu paccayesu āhāraṃ tāva āhārento
“Cattāro pañca ālope, abhutvā udakaṃ pive,
alaṃ phāsuvihārāya, pahitattassa bhikkhuno” ti. (theragā. 983)
vuttanayena ūna-udaro assa, na vātabharitabhastā viya uddhumātudaro, bhatta-sammada-paccayā thinamiddhaṃ parihareyyā ti vuttaṃ hoti. Ūnūdaro honto pi ca mitāhāro assa bhojane mattaññū, “neva davāyā” ti ādinā paccavekkhaṇena guṇato dosato ca paricchinnāhāro. Evaṃ mitāhāro samāno pi paccaya-dhutaṅga-pariyatti-adhigama-vasena catubbidhāya appicchatāya appiccho assa. Ekaṃsena hi moneyyapaṭipadaṃ paṭipannena bhikkhunā evaṃ appicchena bhavitabbaṃ.
Tattha ekekasmiṃ paccaye tīhi santosehi santussanā paccayappicchatā. Dhutaṅgadharass’eva sato “dhutavā ti maṃ pare jānantū” ti anicchanatā dhutaṅgappicchatā. Bahussutass’eva sato “bahussuto ti maṃ pare jānantū” ti anicchanatā pariyattiappicchatā Majjhantikattherassa viya. Adhigamasampannass’eva sato “adhigato ayaṃ kusalaṃ dhamman ti maṃ pare jānantū” ti anicchanatā adhigamappicchatā, sā ca arahattādhigamato oraṃ veditabbā, arahattādhigamatthañ hi ayaṃ paṭipadā ti.
Evaṃ appiccho pi ca arahattamaggena taṇhāloluppaṃ hitvā alolupo assa. Evaṃ alolupo hi sadā icchāya nicchāto aniccho hoti nibbuto, yāya icchāya chātā honti sattā khuppipāsāturā viya atittā, tāya icchāya aniccho hoti, anicchattā ca nicchāto hoti, anāturo paramatittippatto, evaṃ nicchātattā nibbuto hoti vūpasanta-sabbakilesa-pariḷāho ti evam ettha uppaṭipāṭiyā yojanā veditabbā.

Evaṃ yāva arahattappatti tāva paṭipadaṃ kathetvā idāni taṃ paṭipadaṃ paṭipannassa bhikkhuno arahattappattiniṭṭhaṃ dhutaṅgasamādānaṃ senāsanavattañ ca kathento “sa piṇḍacāran” ti gāthādvayam āha.
Tattha sa piṇḍacāraṃ caritvā ti so bhikkhu bhikkhaṃ caritvā bhattakiccaṃ vā katvā. Vanantam abhihāraye ti apapañcito gihipapañcena vanaṃ eva gaccheyya. Upaṭṭhito rukkhamūlasmin ti rukkhamūle ṭhito vā hutvā. Āsanūpagato ti āsanaṃ upagato vā hutvā, nisinno ti vuttaṃ hoti. Munī ti moneyyapaṭipadaṃ paṭipanno.
Ettha ca “piṇḍacāraṃ caritvā” ti iminā piṇḍapātikaṅgaṃ vuttaṃ. Yasmā pana ukkaṭṭha-piṇḍapātiko sapadānacārī ekāsaniko pattapiṇḍiko khalupacchābhattiko ca hoti yeva, tecīvarika-paṃsukūlam pi ca samādiyat’eva, tasmā imāni pi cha vuttān’eva honti. “Vanantam abhihāraye” ti iminā pana āraññikaṅgaṃ vuttaṃ, “upaṭṭhito rukkhamūlasmin” ti iminā rukkhamūlikaṅgaṃ, “āsanūpagato” ti iminā nesajjikaṅgaṃ. Yathākkamaṃ pana etesaṃ anulomattā abbhokāsika-yathāsanthatika-sosānikaṅgāni vuttāni yeva hontī ti evam etāya gāthāya terasa dhutaṅgāni Nālakattherassa kathesi.

Sa jhānapasuto dhīro ti so anuppannassa jhānassa uppādanena uppannassa āvajjana-samāpajjanādhiṭṭhāna-vuṭṭhāna-paccavekkhaṇehi ca jhānesu pasuto anuyutto. Dhīro ti dhitisampanno. Vanante ramito siyā ti vane abhirato siyā, gāmantasenāsane nābhirameyyā ti vuttaṃ hoti. Jhāyetha rukkhamūlasmiṃ, attānam abhitosayan ti na kevalaṃ lokiyajjhānapasuto yeva siyā, api ca kho tasmiṃ yeva rukkhamūle sotāpattimaggādi-sampayuttena lokuttarajjhānenāpi attānaṃ atīva tosento jhāyetha. Paramassāsappattiyā hi lokuttarajjhānen’eva cittaṃ atīva tussati, na aññena. Tenāha “attānam abhitosayan” ti. Evam imāya gāthāya jhānapasutatāya vanantasenāsanābhiratiṃ arahattañ ca kathesi.

Idāni yasmā imaṃ dhammadesanaṃ sutvā Nālakatthero vanantam abhihāretvā nirāhāro pi paṭipadāpūraṇe atīva ussukko ahosi, nirāhārena ca samaṇadhammaṃ kātuṃ na sakkā. Tathā karontassa hi jīvitaṃ nappavattati, kilese pana anuppādentena āhāro pariyesitabbo, ayam ettha ñāyo. Tasmā tassa Bhagavā aparāparesu pi divasesu piṇḍāya caritabbaṃ, kilesā pana na uppādetabbā ti dassanatthaṃ arahattappatti-niṭṭhaṃ yeva bhikkhācāravattaṃ kathento “tato ratyā vivasāne” ti ādikā cha gāthāyo abhāsi.
Tattha tato ti “sa piṇḍacāraṃ caritvā, vanantam abhihāraye” ti ettha vutta-piṇḍacāra-vanantābhihārato uttari pi. Ratyā vivasāne ti rattisamatikkame, dutiyadivase ti vuttaṃ hoti. Gāmantam abhihāraye ti ābhisamācārikavattaṃ katvā yāva bhikkhācāravelā, tāva vivekam anubrūhetvā gatapaccāgatavatte vuttanayena kammaṭṭhānaṃ manasi karonto gāmaṃ gaccheyya. Avhānaṃ nābhinandeyyā ti “bhante, amhākaṃ ghare bhuñjitabban” ti nimantanaṃ, “deti nu kho na deti nu kho sundaraṃ nu kho deti asundaraṃ nu kho detī” ti evarūpaṃ vitakkaṃ bhojanañ ca paṭipadāpūrako bhikkhu nābhinandeyya, nappaṭiggaṇheyyā ti vuttaṃ hoti. Yadi pana balakkārena pattaṃ gahetvā pūretvā denti, paribhuñjitvā samaṇadhammo kātabbo, dhutaṅgaṃ na kuppati, tad upādāya pana taṃ gāmaṃ na pavisitabbaṃ. Abhihārañ ca gāmato ti sace gāmaṃ paviṭṭhassa pātisatehi pi bhattaṃ abhiharanti, tam pi nābhinandeyya, tato ekasittham pi nappaṭiggaṇheyya, aññadatthu gharapaṭipāṭiyā piṇḍapātam eva careyyā ti.

Na munī gāmam āgamma, kulesu sahasā care ti so ca monatthāya paṭipannako muni gāmaṃ gato samāno kulesu sahasā na care, sahasokitādi-ananulomikaṃ gihisaṃsaggaṃ na āpajjeyyā ti vuttaṃ hoti. Ghāsesanaṃ chinnakatho, na vācaṃ payutaṃ bhaṇe ti chinnakatho viya hutvā obhāsa-parikathā-nimitta-viññatti-payuttaṃ ghāsesanavācaṃ na bhaṇeyya. Sace ākaṅkheyya, gilāno samāno gelañña-paṭibāhanatthāya bhaṇeyya. Senāsanatthāya vā viññattiṃ ṭhapetvā obhāsa-parikathā-nimitta-payuttaṃ, avasesa-paccayatthāya pana agilāno neva kiñci bhaṇeyyā ti.

Alatthaṃ yad idan ti imissā pana gāthāya ayam attho: gāmaṃ piṇḍāya paviṭṭho appamattake pi kismiñci laddhe “alatthaṃ yaṃ idaṃ sādhū” ti cintetvā aladdhe “nālatthaṃ kusalan” ti tam pi “sundaran” ti cintetvā ubhayen’eva lābhālābhena so tādī nibbikāro hutvā rukkhaṃ v’upanivattati. Yathā pi puriso phalagavesī rukkhaṃ upagamma phalaṃ laddhā pi aladdhā pi ananunīto appaṭihato majjhatto yeva hutvā gacchati, evaṃ kulaṃ upagamma lābhaṃ laddhā pi aladdhā pi majjhatto va hutvā gacchatī ti.

Uccāvacā ti imissā gāthāya sambandho: evaṃ bhikkhācāra-vatta-sampanno hutvā pi tāvataken’eva tuṭṭhiṃ anāpajjitvā paṭipadaṃ ārodheyya. Paṭipattisārañ hi sāsanaṃ. Sā cāyaṃ “uccāvacā…pe… mutan” ti.
Tass’attho sā cāyaṃ maggapaṭipadā uttama-nihīna-bhedato uccāvacā buddhasamaṇena pakāsitā. Sukhāpaṭipadā hi khippābhiññā uccā, dukkhāpaṭipadā dandhābhiññā avacā, itarā dve ekenaṅgena uccā ekena avacā, paṭhamā eva vā uccā, itarā tisso pi avacā.
Tāya c’etāya uccāya avacāya vā paṭipadāya na pāraṃ diguṇaṃ yanti. “Duguṇan” ti vā pāṭho, ekamaggena dvikkhattuṃ nibbānaṃ na yantī ti attho. Kasmā? Yena maggena ye kilesā pahīnā, tesaṃ puna appahātabbato, etena parihānadhammābhāvaṃ dīpeti. Nayidaṃ ekaguṇaṃ mutan ti tañ ca idaṃ pāraṃ ekakkhattuṃ yeva phusanāraham pi na hoti. Kasmā? Ekena maggena sabbakilesa-ppahānābhāvato, etena ekamaggen’eva arahattābhāvaṃ dīpeti.

Idāni paṭipadānisaṃsaṃ dassento “yassa ca visatā” ti gātham āha. Tass’attho yassa ca evaṃ paṭipannassa bhikkhuno tāya paṭipadāya pahīnattā aṭṭhasata-taṇhā-vicarita-bhāvena visatattā visatā taṇhā natthi, tassa kilesasotacchedena chinnasotassa, kusalākusalappahānena kiccākiccappahīnassa rāgajo vā dosajo vā appamattako pi pariḷāho na vijjatī ti.

Idāni yasmā imā gāthāyo sutvā Nālakattherassa cittaṃ udapādi “yadi ettakaṃ moneyyaṃ sukaraṃ na dukkaraṃ, sakkā appakasirena pūretun” ti, tasmāssa Bhagavā “dukkaram eva moneyyan” ti dassento puna “moneyyaṃ te upaññissan” ti ādim āha.
Tattha upaññissan ti upaññāpeyyaṃ, kathayissan ti vuttaṃ hoti. Khuradhārā upamā assā ti khuradhārūpamo. Bhave ti bhaveyya. Ko adhippāyo? Moneyyaṃ paṭipanno bhikkhu khuradhāraṃ upamaṃ katvā paccayesu vatteyya. Yathā madhudiddhaṃ khuradhāraṃ lihanto, chedato jivhaṃ rakkhati, evaṃ dhammena laddhe paccaye paribhuñjanto cittaṃ kilesuppattito rakkheyyā ti vuttaṃ hoti. Paccayā hi parisuddhena ñāyena laddhuñ ca anavajjaparibhogena paribhuñjituñ ca na sukhena sakkā ti Bhagavā paccayanissitam eva bahuso bhaṇati. Jivhāya tālum āhacca, udare saññato siyā ti jivhāya tāluṃ uppīḷetvā pi rasataṇhaṃ vinodento kiliṭṭhena maggena uppannapaccaye asevanto udare saṃyato siyā.

Alīnacitto ca siyā ti niccaṃ kusalānaṃ dhammānaṃ bhāvanāya aṭṭhita-kāritāya akusītacitto ca bhaveyya. Na cāpi bahu cintaye ti ñāti-janapadāmara-vitakkavasena ca bahuṃ na cinteyya. Nirāmagandho asito, brahmacariyaparāyaṇo ti nikkileso ca hutvā taṇhādiṭṭhīhi kismiñci bhave anissito sikkhāttaya-sakalasāsana-brahmacariya-parāyaṇo eva bhaveyya.

Ekāsanassā ti vivittāsanassa. Āsanamukhena c’ettha sabba-iriyāpathā vuttā, yato sabba-iriyāpathesu ekībhāvassa sikkheyyā ti vuttaṃ hotī ti veditabbaṃ. Ekāsanassā ti ca sampadānavacanam etaṃ. Samaṇūpāsanassa cā ti samaṇehi upāsitabbassa aṭṭhatiṃsārammaṇa-bhāvanānuyogassa, samaṇānaṃ vā upāsanabhūtassa aṭṭhatiṃsārammaṇa-bhedass’eva. Idam pi sampadānavacanam eva, upāsanatthan ti vuttaṃ hoti. Ettha ca ekāsanena kāyaviveko, samaṇūpāsanena cittaviveko vutto hotī ti veditabbo. Ekattaṃ monam akkhātan ti evam idaṃ kāyacitta-viveka-vasena “ekattaṃ monan” ti akkhātaṃ. Eko ce abhiramissasī ti idaṃ pana uttaragāthāpekkhaṃ padaṃ, “atha bhāhisi dasadisā” ti iminā assa sambandho. Bhāhisī ti bhāsissasi pakāsessasi, imaṃ paṭipadaṃ bhāvento sabbadisāsu kittiyā pākaṭo bhavissasī ti vuttaṃ hoti.

Sutvā dhīrānan ti ādīnaṃ pana catunnaṃ padānaṃ ayam attho: yena ca kittighosena bhāhisi dasadisā, taṃ dhīrānaṃ jhāyīnaṃ kāmacāginaṃ nighosaṃ sutvā atha tvaṃ tena uddhaccaṃ anāpajjitvā bhiyyo hiriñ ca saddhañ ca kareyyāsi, tena ghosena harāyamāno “niyyānika-paṭipadā ayan” ti saddhaṃ uppādetvā uttari paṭipattim eva brūheyyāsi. Māmako ti evañ hi sante mama sāvako hotī ti.

Taṃ nadīhī ti yaṃ taṃ mayā “hiriñ ca saddhañ ca bhiyyo kubbethā” ti vadatā “uddhaccaṃ na kātabban” ti vuttaṃ, taṃ iminā nadīnidassanenāpi jānātha, tabbipariyāyañ ca sobbhesu ca padaresu ca jānātha, sobbhesū ti mātikāsu, padaresū ti darīsu. Kathaṃ? Saṇantā yanti kusobbhā, tuṇhī yanti mahodadhī ti. Kusobbhā hi sobbhapadarādibhedā sabbāpi kunnadiyo saṇantā saddaṃ karontā uddhatā hutvā yanti, Gaṅgādibhedā pana mahānadiyo tuṇhī yanti, evaṃ “moneyyaṃ pūremī” ti uddhato hoti amāmako, māmako pana hiriñ ca saddhañ ca uppādetvā nīcacitto va hoti.

Kiñ ca bhiyyo “yad ūnakaṃ…pe… paṇḍito” ti. Tattha siyā sace aḍḍhakumbhūpamo bālo saṇantatāya, rahado pūro va paṇḍito santatāya, atha kasmā buddhasamaṇo evaṃ dhammadesanābyāvaṭo hutvā bahuṃ bhāsatī ti iminā sambandhena “yaṃ samaṇo” ti gātham āha.

Tass’attho yaṃ buddhasamaṇo bahuṃ bhāsati upetaṃ atthasañhitaṃ, atthupetaṃ dhammupetañ ca hitena ca saṃhitaṃ, taṃ na uddhaccena, api ca kho jānaṃ so dhammaṃ deseti divasam pi desento nippapañco va hutvā, tassa hi sabbaṃ vacīkammaṃ ñāṇānuparivatti. Evaṃ desento ca “idam assa hitaṃ idam assa hitan” ti nānappakārato jānaṃ so bahu bhāsati, na kevalaṃ bahubhāṇitāya.

Avasānagāthāya sambandho: evaṃ tāva sabbaññutaññāṇena samannāgato buddhasamaṇo jānaṃ so dhammaṃ deseti, jānaṃ so bahu bhāsati, tena desitaṃ pana dhammaṃ nibbedhabhāgiyen’eva ñāṇena yo ca jānaṃ saṃyatatto, jānaṃ na bahu bhāsati, sa muni monam arahati, sa muni monam ajjhagā ti.
Tass’attho taṃ dhammaṃ jānanto saṃyatatto guttacitto hutvā yaṃ bhāsitaṃ sattānaṃ hitasukhāvahaṃ na hoti, taṃ jānaṃ na bahu bhāsati. So evaṃvidho monatthaṃ paṭipannako muni moneyyapaṭipadā-saṅkhātaṃ monaṃ arahati. Na kevalañ ca arahati yeva, api ca kho pana sa muni arahatta-maggañāṇa-saṅkhātaṃ monaṃ ajjhagā icc eva veditabbo ti arahattanikūṭena desanaṃ niṭṭhāpesi.
Taṃ sutvā Nālakatthero tīsu ṭhānesu appiccho ahosi dassane savane pucchāyā ti. So hi desanāpariyosāne pasannacitto Bhagavantaṃ vanditvā vanaṃ paviṭṭho, puna “aho vatāhaṃ Bhagavantaṃ passeyyan” ti lolabhāvaṃ na janesi, ayam assa dassane appicchatā. Tathā “aho vatāhaṃ puna dhammadesanaṃ suṇeyyan” ti lolabhāvaṃ na janesi, ayam assa savane appicchatā. Tathā “aho vatāhaṃ puna moneyyapaṭipadaṃ puccheyyan” ti lolabhāvaṃ na janesi, ayam assa pucchāya appicchatā. So evaṃ appiccho samāno pabbatapādaṃ pavisitvā ekavanasaṇḍe dve divasāni na vasi, ekarukkhamūle dve divasāni na nisīdi, ekagāme dve divasāni piṇḍāya na pāvisi. Iti vanato vanaṃ, rukkhato rukkhaṃ, gāmato gāmaṃ āhiṇḍanto anurūpapaṭipadaṃ paṭipajjitvā aggaphale patiṭṭhāsi.
Atha yasmā moneyyapaṭipadaṃ ukkaṭṭhaṃ katvā pūrento bhikkhu satte va māsāni jīvati, majjhimaṃ katvā pūrento satta vassāni, mandaṃ katvā pūrento soḷasa vassāni, ayañ ca ukkaṭṭhaṃ katvā pūresi, tasmā satta māse ṭhatvā attano āyusaṅkhāra-parikkhayaṃ ñatvā nhāyitvā nivāsetvā kāyabandhanaṃ bandhitvā diguṇaṃ saṅghāṭiṃ pārupitvā dasabalābhimukho pañcapatiṭṭhitaṃ vanditvā añjaliṃ paggahetvā Hiṅgulakapabbataṃ nissāya ṭhitako va anupādisesāya nibbānadhātuyā parinibbāyi. Tassa parinibbutabhāvaṃ ñatvā Bhagavā bhikkhusaṅghena saddhiṃ tattha gantvā sarīrakiccaṃ katvā dhātuyo gāhāpetvā cetiyaṃ patiṭṭhāpetvā agamāsī ti.
