Pārāyanānugītigāthāvaṇṇanā
Pārāyanam anugāyissan ti assa ayaṃ sambandho Bhagavatā hi Pārāyane desite soḷasasahassā jaṭilā arahattaṃ pāpuṇiṃsu, avasesānañ ca cuddasakoṭisaṅkhānaṃ devamanussānaṃ dhammābhisamayo ahosi. Vuttañ h’etaṃ porāṇehi
“Tato Pāsāṇake ramme, Pārāyanasamāgame,
Amataṃ pāpayī Buddho, cuddasa pāṇakoṭiyo” ti.
Niṭṭhitāya pana dhammadesanāya tato tato āgatā manussā Bhagavato ānubhāvena attano attano gāma-nigamādīsv eva pātur ahesuṃ. Bhagavā pi Sāvatthim eva agamāsi paricārakasoḷasādīhi anekehi bhikkhusahassehi parivuto. Tattha Piṅgiyo Bhagavantaṃ vanditvā āha “gacchām’ahaṃ, bhante, Bāvarissa buddhuppādaṃ ārocetuṃ, paṭissutañ hi tassa mayā” ti. Atha Bhagavatā anuññāto ñāṇagamanen’eva Godhāvarītīraṃ gantvā pādagamanena assamābhimukho agamāsi.
Tam enaṃ Bāvarī brāhmaṇo maggaṃ olokento nisinno dūrato va khāri-jaṭādi-virahitaṃ bhikkhuvesena āgacchantaṃ disvā “buddho loke uppanno” ti niṭṭhaṃ agamāsi. Sampattañ cāpi naṃ pucchi “kiṃ, Piṅgiya, buddho loke uppanno” ti. “Āma, brāhmaṇa, uppanno, Pāsāṇake cetiye nisinno amhākaṃ dhammaṃ desesi, tam ahaṃ tuyhaṃ desessāmī” ti. Tato Bāvarī mahatā sakkārena sapariso taṃ pūjetvā āsanaṃ paññāpesi. Tattha nisīditvā Piṅgiyo “pārāyanam anugāyissan” ti ādim āha.

Tattha anugāyissan ti Bhagavatā gītaṃ anugāyissaṃ. Yathāddakkhī ti yathā sāmaṃ saccābhisambodhena asādhāraṇañāṇena ca addakkhi. Nikkāmo ti pahīnakāmo. “Nikkamo” ti pi pāṭho, vīriyavā ti attho nikkhanto vā akusalapakkhā. Nibbano ti kilesavana-virahito, taṇhā-virahito eva vā. Kissa hetu musā bhaṇe ti yehi kilesehi musā bhaṇeyya, ete tassa pahīnā ti dasseti. Etena brāhmaṇassa savane ussāhaṃ janeti.

Vaṇṇūpasañhitan ti guṇūpasañhitaṃ.
Saccavhayo ti “buddho” ti saccen’eva avhānena nāmena yutto. Brahme ti taṃ brāhmaṇaṃ ālapati.
Kubbanakan ti parittavanaṃ. Bahupphalaṃ kānanam āvaseyyā ti anekaphalādi-vikati-bharitaṃ kānanaṃ āgamma vaseyya. Appadasse ti Bāvaripabhutike parittapaññe. Mahodadhin ti anotattādiṃ mahantaṃ udakarāsiṃ.

Ye ’me pubbe ti ye ime pubbe.
Tamanud’āsino ti tamonudo āsino. Bhūripaññāṇo ti ñāṇadhajo. Bhūrimedhaso ti vipulapañño.
Sandiṭṭhikam akālikan ti sāmaṃ passitabbaphalaṃ, na ca kālantare pattabbaphalaṃ. Anītikan ti kilesa-īti-virahitaṃ.

Atha naṃ Bāvarī āha “kiṃ nu tamhā” ti dve gāthā. Tato Piṅgiyo Bhagavato santikā avippavāsam eva dīpento “nāhaṃ tamhā” ti ādim āha.
Passāmi naṃ manasā cakkhunā vā ti taṃ buddhaṃ ahaṃ cakkhunā viya manasā passāmi. Namassamāno vivasemi rattin ti namassamāno va rattiṃ atināmemi.
Tena ten’eva nato ti yena disābhāgena buddho, tena ten’evāham pi nato tanninno tappoṇo ti dasseti.

Dubbala-thāmakassā ti appathāmakassa, atha vā dubbalassa dutthāmakassa ca balavīriya-hīnassā ti vuttaṃ hoti. Ten’eva kāyo na paletī ti ten’eva dubbala-thāmakattena kāyo na gacchati, yena vā buddho, tena na gacchati. “Na paretī” ti pi pāṭho, so ev’attho. Tatthā ti buddhassa santike. Saṅkappa-yantāyā ti saṅkappa-gamanena. Tena yutto ti yena buddho, tena yutto payutto anuyutto ti dasseti.

Paṅke sayāno ti kāmakaddame sayamāno. Dīpā dīpaṃ upaplavin ti satthārādito satthārādiṃ abhigacchiṃ. Ath’addasāsiṃ sambuddhan ti so’haṃ evaṃ duddiṭṭhiṃ gahetvā anvāhiṇḍanto atha Pāsāṇake cetiye buddham addakkhiṃ.

Imissā gāthāya avasāne Piṅgiyassa ca Bāvarissa ca indriyaparipākaṃ viditvā Bhagavā Sāvatthiyaṃ ṭhito yeva suvaṇṇobhāsaṃ muñci. Piṅgiyo Bāvarissa buddhaguṇe vaṇṇayanto nisinno eva taṃ obhāsaṃ disvā “kiṃ idan” ti vilokento Bhagavantaṃ attano purato ṭhitaṃ viya disvā Bāvaribrāhmaṇassa “buddho āgato” ti ārocesi, brāhmaṇo uṭṭhāyāsanā añjaliṃ paggahetvā aṭṭhāsi. Bhagavā pi obhāsaṃ pharitvā brāhmaṇassa attānaṃ dassento ubhinnam pi sappāyaṃ viditvā Piṅgiyam eva ālapamāno “yathā ahū vakkalī” ti imaṃ gātham abhāsi.
Tass’attho yathā Vakkalitthero saddhādhimutto ahosi, saddhādhurena ca arahattaṃ pāpuṇi. Yathā ca soḷasannaṃ eko Bhadrāvudho nāma yathā ca Āḷavi Gotamo, evam eva tvam pi pamuñcassu saddhaṃ. Tato saddhāya adhimuccanto “sabbe saṅkhārā aniccā” ti ādinā nayena vipassanaṃ ārabhitvā maccudheyyassa pāraṃ nibbānaṃ gamissasī ti arahattanikūṭen’eva desanaṃ niṭṭhāpesi. Desanāpariyosāne Piṅgiyo arahatte Bāvarī anāgāmiphale patiṭṭhahi. Bāvaribrāhmaṇassa sissā pana pañcasatā sotāpannā ahesuṃ.

Idāni Piṅgiyo attano pasādaṃ pavedento “esa bhiyyo” ti ādim āha. Tattha paṭibhānavā ti paṭibhānapaṭisambhidāya upeto.
Adhideve abhiññāyā ti adhidevakare dhamme ñatvā. Parovaran ti hīnapaṇītaṃ, attano ca parassa ca adhidevattakaraṃ sabbaṃ dhammajātaṃ vedī ti vuttaṃ hoti. Kaṅkhīnaṃ paṭijānatan ti kaṅkhīnaṃ yeva sataṃ “nikkaṅkhamhā” ti paṭijānantānaṃ.

Asaṃhīran ti rāgādīhi asaṃhāriyaṃ. Asaṃkuppan ti akuppaṃ avipariṇāmadhammaṃ. Dvīhi pi padehi nibbānaṃ bhaṇati. Addhā gamissāmī ti ekaṃsen’eva taṃ anupādisesaṃ nibbānadhātuṃ gamissāmi. Na m’ettha kaṅkhā ti natthi me ettha nibbāne kaṅkhā. Evaṃ maṃ dhārehi adhimuttacittan ti Piṅgiyo “evam eva tvam pi pamuñcassu saddhan” ti, iminā Bhagavato ovādena attani saddhaṃ uppādetvā saddhādhuren’eva ca vimuñcitvā taṃ saddhādhimuttataṃ pakāsento Bhagavantaṃ āha “evaṃ maṃ dhārehi adhimuttacittan” ti. Ayam ettha adhippāyo “yathā maṃ tvaṃ avaca, evam eva adhimuttaṃ dhārehī” ti.
Iti Soḷasabrāhmaṇasuttavaṇṇanā niṭṭhitā.
Niṭṭhito ca pañcamo vaggo atthavaṇṇanānayato,
nāmena Pārāyanavaggo ti.

Ettāvatā ca yaṃ vuttaṃ
“Uttamaṃ vandaneyyānaṃ, vanditvā ratanattayaṃ,
Yo Khuddakanikāyamhi, khuddācārappahāyinā.
“Desito lokanāthena, lokanittharaṇesinā,
Tassa Suttanipātassa, karissām’atthavaṇṇanan” ti.
Ettha Uragavaggādi-pañcavagga-saṅgahitassa Uragasuttādi-sattatisutta-ppabhedassa Suttanipātassa atthavaṇṇanā katā hoti. Ten’etaṃ vuccati
“Imaṃ Suttanipātassa, karonten’atthavaṇṇanaṃ,
Saddhammaṭṭhitikāmena, yaṃ pattaṃ kusalaṃ mayā.
“Tassānubhāvato khippaṃ, dhamme ariyappavedite,
Vuḍḍhiṃ virūḷhiṃ vepullaṃ, pāpuṇātu ayaṃ jano” ti.

Paramavisuddha-saddhā-buddhi-vīriya-ppaṭimaṇḍitena sīlācār’ajjava-maddavādiguṇa-samudaya-samuditena sakasamaya-samayantara-gahan’ajjhogāhaṇa-samatthena paññā-veyyattiya-samannāgatena Tipiṭaka-pariyatti-ppabhede sāṭṭhakathe Satthusāsane appaṭihata-ñāṇa-ppabhāvena mahāveyyākaraṇena karaṇasampattijanita-sukhaviniggata-madhurodāra-vacanalāvaṇṇayuttena1 yuttamuttavādinā vādīvarena mahākavinā chaḷabhiññā-paṭisambhidādi-ppabheda-guṇa-paṭimaṇḍite uttarimanussadhamme suppatiṭṭhita-buddhīnaṃ theravaṃsa-ppadīpānaṃ therānaṃ Mahāvihāravāsīnaṃ vaṃsālaṅkārabhūtena vipula-visuddha-buddhinā Buddhaghoso ti garūhi gahita-nāmadheyyena therena katā ayaṃ Paramatthajotikā nāma Suttanipāta-aṭṭhakathā
Tāva tiṭṭhatu lokasmiṃ, lokanittharaṇesinaṃ,
Dassentī kulaputtānaṃ, nayaṃ paññāvisuddhiyā.
Yāva Buddho ti nāmam pi, suddhacittassa tādino,
Lokamhi lokajeṭṭhassa, pavattati Mahesino ti.
Suttanipāta-atthavaṇṇanā niṭṭhitā.
