Idāni ito anantarāya maraṇassatiyā bhāvanāniddeso anuppatto. Tattha maraṇan ti ekabhava-pariyāpannassa jīvitindriyassa upacchedo. Yaṃ pan’etaṃ arahantānaṃ vaṭṭadukkhasamuccheda-saṅkhātaṃ samuccheda-maraṇaṃ, saṅkhārānaṃ khaṇabhaṅga-saṅkhātaṃ khaṇika-maraṇaṃ, rukkho mato lohaṃ matan ti ādīsu sammuti-maraṇañ ca, na taṃ idha adhippetaṃ.

Yam pi c’etaṃ adhippetaṃ, taṃ kālamaraṇaṃ akālamaraṇan ti duvidhaṃ hoti. Tattha kālamaraṇaṃ puññakkhayena vā āyukkhayena vā ubhayakkhayena vā hoti. Akālamaraṇaṃ kammupacchedaka-kammavasena.

Tattha yaṃ vijjamānāya pi āyusantāna-janaka-paccaya-sampattiyā kevalaṃ paṭisandhi-janakassa kammassa vipakka-vipākattā maraṇaṃ hoti, idaṃ puññakkhayena maraṇaṃ nāma. Yaṃ gati-kālâhārâdi-sampattiyā abhāvena ajjatanakāla1-purisānaṃ viya vassasata-matta-parimāṇassa āyuno khayavasena maraṇaṃ hoti, idaṃ āyukkhayena maraṇaṃ nāma. Yaṃ pana Dūsīmāra-Kalāburājâdīnaṃ viya taṅkhaṇañ ñeva ṭhānā cāvana-samatthena kammunā upacchinna-santānānaṃ, purimakammavasena vā satthâharaṇâdīhi upakkamehi upacchijjamāna-santānānaṃ maraṇaṃ hoti, idaṃ akālamaraṇaṃ nāma. Taṃ sabbam pi vuttappakārena jīvitindriyupacchedena saṅgahitaṃ. Iti jīvitindriyupaccheda-saṅkhātassa maraṇassa saraṇaṃ maraṇassati.

Taṃ bhāvetukāmena rahogatena paṭisallīnena “maraṇaṃ bhavissati, jīvitindriyaṃ upacchijjissatī” ti vā, “maraṇaṃ maraṇan” ti vā yoniso manasikāro pavattetabbo.

Ayoniso pavattayato hi iṭṭhajana-maraṇânussaraṇe soko uppajjati, vijātamātuyā piyaputta-maraṇânussaraṇe viya, aniṭṭhajana-maraṇânussaraṇe pāmojjaṃ uppajjati, verīnaṃ verimaraṇânussaraṇe viya, majjhattajana-maraṇânussaraṇe saṃvego na uppajjati, matakaḷevara-dassane chavaḍāhakassa viya, attano maraṇânussaraṇe santāso uppajjati, ukkhittâsikaṃ vadhakaṃ disvā bhīrukajātikassa viya.

Tad etaṃ sabbam pi sati-saṃvega-ñāṇa-virahato hoti. Tasmā tattha tattha hatamatasatte oloketvā diṭṭhapubbasampattīnaṃ sattānaṃ matānaṃ maraṇaṃ āvajjetvā satiñ ca saṃvegañ ca ñāṇañ ca yojetvā “maraṇaṃ bhavissatī” ti ādinā nayena manasikāro pavattetabbo. Evaṃ pavattento hi yoniso pavatteti, upāyena pavattetī ti attho.

Evaṃ pavattayato yeva hi ekaccassa nīvaraṇāni vikkhambhanti, maraṇârammaṇā sati saṇṭhāti, upacārappattam eva kammaṭṭhānaṃ hoti.

Yassa pana ettāvatā na hoti, tena

  1. vadhaka-paccupaṭṭhānato,
  2. sampattivipattito,
  3. upasaṃharaṇato,
  4. kāyabahusādhāraṇato,
  5. āyudubbalato,
  6. animittato,
  7. addhāna-paricchedato,
  8. khaṇaparittato ti

imehi aṭṭhah’ākārehi maraṇaṃ anussaritabbaṃ.

Tattha vadhaka-paccupaṭṭhānato ti vadhakassa viya paccupaṭṭhānato. Yathā hi “imassa sīsaṃ chindissāmī” ti asiṃ gahetvā gīvāya cārayamāno vadhako paccupaṭṭhito va hoti, evaṃ maraṇam pi paccupaṭṭhitam evā ti anussaritabbaṃ. Kasmā? Saha jātiyā āgatato, jīvitaharaṇato ca.

Yathā hi ahicchattaka-makuḷaṃ matthakena paṃsuṃ gahetvā va uggacchati, evaṃ sattā jarāmaraṇaṃ gahetvā va nibbattanti. Tathā hi nesaṃ paṭisandhicittaṃ uppādânantaram eva jaraṃ patvā pabbatasikharato patitasilā viya bhijjati saddhiṃ sampayuttakhandhehi. Evaṃ khaṇikamaraṇaṃ tāva saha jātiyā āgataṃ. Jātassa pana avassaṃ maraṇato idhâdhippeta-maraṇam pi saha jātiyā āgataṃ.

Tasmā esa satto jātakālato paṭṭhāya yathā nāma uṭṭhito sūriyo atthâbhimukho gacchat’eva, gatagataṭṭhānato īsakam pi na nivattati, yathā vā nadī pabbateyyā sīghasotā hārahārinī sandat’eva vattat’eva īsakam pi na nivattati, evaṃ īsakam pi anivattamāno maraṇâbhimukho va yāti. Tena vuttaṃ:

“Yam ekarattiṃ paṭhamaṃ gabbhe vasati māṇavo,
abbhuṭṭhito va so yāti, sa gacchaṃ na nivattatī” ti. (jā. 1.15.363)

Evaṃ gacchato c’assa, gimhâbhitattānaṃ kunnadīnaṃ khayo viya, pāto āporasânugata-bandhanānaṃ dumapphalānaṃ patanaṃ viya, muggarâbhitāḷitānaṃ mattika-bhājanānaṃ bhedo viya, sūriyarasmi-samphuṭṭhānaṃ ussāvabindūnaṃ viddhaṃsanaṃ viya ca maraṇam eva āsannaṃ hoti. Ten’āha:

“Accayanti ahorattā, jīvitam uparujjhati,
āyu khīyati maccānaṃ, kunnadīnaṃ va odakaṃ. (saṃ. ni. 1.146)

“Phalānam iva pakkānaṃ pāto papatato bhayaṃ,
evaṃ jātāna maccānaṃ niccaṃ maraṇato bhayaṃ.

Yathā pi kumbhakārassa kataṃ mattika-bhājanaṃ,
khuddakañ ca mahantañ ca yaṃ pakkaṃ yañ ca āmakaṃ,2
sabbaṃ bhedana-pariyantaṃ, evaṃ maccāna jīvitaṃ”. (su. ni. 582-583)

“Ussāvo va tiṇaggamhi sūriyuggamanaṃ3 pati,
evam āyu manussānaṃ, mā maṃ amma nivārayā” ti. (jā. 1.11.79)

Evaṃ ukkhittâsiko vadhako viya saha jātiyā āgataṃ pan’etaṃ maraṇaṃ gīvāya asiṃ cārayamāno so vadhako viya jīvitaṃ harati yeva, na aharitvā4 nivattati. Tasmā saha jātiyā āgatato, jīvitaharaṇato ca ukkhittâsiko vadhako viya maraṇam pi paccupaṭṭhitam evā ti evaṃ vadhaka-paccupaṭṭhānato maraṇaṃ anussaritabbaṃ.

Sampattivipattito ti idha sampatti nāma tāvad eva sobhati, yāva naṃ vipatti nâbhibhavati, na ca sā sampatti nāma atthi, yā vipattiṃ atikkamma tiṭṭheyya. Tathā hi,

“Sakalaṃ mediniṃ bhutvā datvā koṭisataṃ sukhī
aḍḍhâmalaka-mattassa ante issarataṃ gato,

Ten’eva dehabandhena puññamhi khayam āgate
maraṇâbhimukho so pi Asoko sokam āgato” ti.

Api ca sabbaṃ ārogyaṃ byādhi-pariyosānaṃ, sabbaṃ yobbanaṃ jarā-pariyosānaṃ, sabbaṃ jīvitaṃ maraṇa-pariyosānaṃ, sabbo yeva lokasannivāso jātiyā anugato, jarāya anusaṭo, byādhinā abhibhūto, maraṇena abbhāhato. Ten’āha:

“Yathā pi selā vipulā nabhaṃ āhacca pabbatā
samantā anupariyeyyuṃ nippothentā catuddisā,

Evaṃ jarā ca maccu ca adhivattanti pāṇine,
khattiye brāhmaṇe vesse sudde caṇḍāla-pukkuse,
na kiñci parivajjeti, sabbam evâbhimaddati.

Na tattha hatthīnaṃ bhūmi, na rathānaṃ na pattiyā,
na câpi manta-yuddhena sakkā jetuṃ dhanena vā” ti. (saṃ. ni. 1.136)

Evaṃ jīvitasampattiyā maraṇavipatti-pariyosānataṃ vavatthapentena sampattivipattito maraṇaṃ anussaritabbaṃ.

Upasaṃharaṇato ti parehi saddhiṃ attano upasaṃharaṇato. Tattha sattah’ākārehi upasaṃharaṇato maraṇaṃ anussaritabbaṃ:

  1. yasamahattato,
  2. puññamahattato,
  3. thāmamahattato,
  4. iddhimahattato,
  5. paññāmahattato,
  6. paccekabuddhato,
  7. Sammāsambuddhato ti.

Kathaṃ? Idaṃ maraṇaṃ nāma mahāyasānaṃ mahāparivārānaṃ sampanna-dhana-vāhanānaṃ Mahāsammata-Mandhātu-Mahāsudassana-Daḷhanemi-Nimippabhutīnam pi upari nirāsaṅkam eva patitaṃ, kim aṅgaṃ pana mayhaṃ upari na patissati?

Mahāyasā rājavarā, Mahāsammata-ādayo,
te pi maccuvasaṃ pattā, mādisesu kathā va kā ti?

Evaṃ tāva yasamahattato anussaritabbaṃ.

Kathaṃ puññamahattato?

Jotiko Jaṭilo Uggo Meṇḍako atha Puṇṇako,
ete c’aññe ca ye loke mahāpuññā ti vissutā,
sabbe maraṇam āpannā, mādisesu kathā va kā ti?

Evaṃ puññamahattato anussaritabbaṃ.

Kathaṃ thāmamahattato?

Vāsudevo Baladevo Bhīmaseno Yudhiṭṭhilo,
Cānuro yo mahāmallo5 Antakassa vasaṃ gatā.

Evaṃ thāmabalûpetā iti lokamhi vissutā,
ete pi maraṇaṃ yātā, mādisesu kathā va kā ti?

Evaṃ thāmamahattato anussaritabbaṃ.

Kathaṃ iddhimahattato?

Pādaṅguṭṭhaka-mattena Vejayantam akampayi
yo nām’iddhimataṃ seṭṭho dutiyo aggasāvako,

So pi maccumukhaṃ ghoraṃ, migo sīhamukhaṃ viya,
paviṭṭho saha iddhīhi, mādisesu kathā va kā ti?

Evaṃ iddhimahattato anussaritabbaṃ.

Kathaṃ paññāmahattato?

Lokanāthaṃ ṭhapetvāna ye c’aññe atthi pāṇino,
paññāya Sāriputtassa kalaṃ nâgghanti soḷasiṃ.

Evaṃ nāma mahāpañño paṭhamo aggasāvako
maraṇassa vasaṃ patto, mādisesu kathā va kā ti?

Evaṃ paññāmahattato anussaritabbaṃ.

Kathaṃ paccekabuddhato? Ye pi te attano ñāṇavīriyabalena sabbakilesa-sattu-nimmathanaṃ katvā paccekabodhiṃ pattā6 khaggavisāṇakappā sayambhuno, te pi maraṇato na muttā, kuto panâhaṃ muccissāmī ti?

Taṃ taṃ nimittam āgamma vīmaṃsantā mahesayo
sayambhuññāṇa-tejena ye pattā āsavakkhayaṃ,

Ekacariyanivāsena khaggasiṅga-samûpamā,
te pi nâtigatā maccuṃ, mādisesu kathā va kā ti?

Evaṃ paccekabuddhato anussaritabbaṃ.

Kathaṃ Sammāsambuddhato? Yo pi so Bhagavā asīti-anubyañjanapaṭimaṇḍita-dvattiṃsa-mahāpurisalakkhaṇa-vicitra-rūpakāyo sabbâkāra-parisuddha-sīlakkhandhâdi-guṇaratana-samiddha-dhammakāyo yasamahatta-puññamahatta-thāmamahatta-iddhimahatta-paññāmahattānaṃ pāraṃ gato asamo asamasamo appaṭipuggalo arahaṃ Sammāsambuddho, so pi salila-vuṭṭhinipātena mahā-aggikkhandho viya maraṇa-vuṭṭhinipātena ṭhānaso vūpasanto.

Evaṃ mahânubhāvassa yaṃ nām’etaṃ mahesino
na bhayena na lajjāya maraṇaṃ vasam āgataṃ,

Nillajjaṃ vītasārajjaṃ sabbasattâbhimaddanaṃ,
tayidaṃ mādisaṃ sattaṃ kathaṃ nâbhibhavissatī ti?

Evaṃ Sammāsambuddhato anussaritabbaṃ.

Tass’evaṃ yasamahattatâdi-sampannehi parehi saddhiṃ maraṇa-sāmaññatāya attānaṃ upasaṃharitvā, tesaṃ viya sattavisesānaṃ mayham pi maraṇaṃ bhavissatī ti anussarato upacārappattaṃ kammaṭṭhānaṃ hotī ti. Evaṃ upasaṃharaṇato maraṇaṃ anussaritabbaṃ.

Kāyabahusādhāraṇato ti ayaṃ kāyo bahusādhāraṇo. Asītiyā tāva kimikulānaṃ sādhāraṇo, tattha chavi-nissitā pāṇā chaviṃ khādanti, camma-nissitā cammaṃ khādanti, maṃsa-nissitā maṃsaṃ khādanti, nhāru-nissitā nhāruṃ khādanti, aṭṭhi-nissitā aṭṭhiṃ khādanti, miñja-nissitā miñjaṃ khādanti, tatth’eva jāyanti jīyanti mīyanti uccāra-passāvaṃ karonti. Kāyo va7 nesaṃ sūtigharañ8 c’eva gilānasālā ca susānañ ca vaccakuṭi ca passāvadoṇikā ca. Svâyaṃ tesam pi kimikulānaṃ9 pakopena maraṇaṃ nigacchati yeva. Yathā ca asītiyā kimikulānaṃ, evaṃ ajjhattikānaṃ yeva anekasatānaṃ rogānaṃ, bāhirānañ ca ahi-vicchikâdīnaṃ maraṇassa paccayānaṃ sādhāraṇo.

Yathā hi catumahāpathe ṭhapite lakkhamhi sabbadisāhi āgatā sara-satti-tomara-pāsāṇâdayo nipatanti, evaṃ kāye pi sabbupaddavā nipatanti. Svâyaṃ tesam pi upaddavānaṃ nipātena maraṇaṃ nigacchati yeva. Ten’āha Bhagavā:

“Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu divase nikkhante rattiyā paṭihitāya iti paṭisañcikkhati: bahukā kho me paccayā maraṇassa, ahi vā maṃ ḍaṃseyya, vicchiko vā maṃ ḍaṃseyya, satapadī vā maṃ ḍaṃseyya, tena me assa kālaṅkiriyā, so mam’assa antarāyo, upakkhalitvā vā papateyyaṃ, bhattaṃ vā me bhuttaṃ byāpajjeyya, pittaṃ vā me kuppeyya, semhaṃ vā me kuppeyya, satthakā vā me vātā kuppeyyuṃ, tena me assa kālaṅkiriyā, so mam’assa antarāyo” ti. (a. ni. 6.20)

Evaṃ kāyabahusādhāraṇato maraṇaṃ anussaritabbaṃ.

Āyudubbalato ti āyu nām’etaṃ abalaṃ dubbalaṃ. Tathā hi sattānaṃ jīvitaṃ assāsapassāsûpanibaddhañ c’eva iriyāpathûpanibaddhañ ca sītuṇhûpanibaddhañ ca mahābhūtûpanibaddhañ ca āhārûpanibaddhañ ca.

Tad etaṃ assāsapassāsānaṃ samavuttitaṃ labhamānam eva pavattati, bahi nikkhanta-nāsika-vāte pana anto apavisante, paviṭṭhe vā anikkhamante mato nāma hoti. Catunnaṃ iriyāpathānam pi samavuttitaṃ labhamānam eva pavattati, aññataraññatarassa pana adhimattatāya āyusaṅkhārā upacchijjanti. Sītuṇhānam pi samavuttitaṃ labhamānam eva pavattati, atisītena pana ati-uṇhena vā abhibhūtassa vipajjati. Mahābhūtānam pi samavuttitaṃ labhamānam eva pavattati, pathavīdhātuyā pana āpodhātu-ādīnaṃ vā aññataraññatarassa pakopena balasampanno pi puggalo patthaddha-kāyo vā atisārâdivasena kilinnapūti-kāyo vā mahāḍāhapareto vā sambhijjamāna-sandhibandhano vā hutvā jīvitakkhayaṃ pāpuṇāti. Kabaḷīkārâhāram pi yuttakāle labhantass’eva jīvitaṃ pavattati, āhāraṃ alabhamānassa pana parikkhayaṃ gacchatī ti. Evaṃ āyudubbalato maraṇaṃ anussaritabbaṃ.

Animittato ti avavatthānato, paricchedâbhāvato ti attho. Sattānaṃ hi,

Jīvitaṃ byādhi kālo ca dehanikkhepanaṃ gati,
pañc’ete jīvalokasmiṃ animittā na nāyare.

Tattha jīvitaṃ tāva “ettakam eva jīvitabbaṃ, na ito paran” ti vavatthānâbhāvato animittaṃ. Kalalakāle pi hi sattā maranti, abbuda-pesi-ghana-māsika-dvemāsa-temāsa-catumāsa-pañcamāsa-dasamāsa-kāle pi, kucchito nikkhantasamaye pi, tato paraṃ vassasatassa anto pi bahi pi maranti yeva.

Byādhi pi “iminā va byādhinā sattā maranti, nâññenā” ti 10 vavatthānâbhāvato animitto. Cakkhurogenâpi hi sattā maranti, sotarogâdīnaṃ aññatarenâpi.

Kālo pi “imasmiṃ yeva kāle maritabbaṃ, nâññasmin” ti evaṃ vavatthānâbhāvato animitto. Pubbaṇhe pi hi sattā maranti, majjhanhikâdīnaṃ aññatarasmim pi.

Dehanikkhepanam pi “idh’eva mīyamānānaṃ dehena patitabbaṃ, nâññatrā” ti evaṃ vavatthānâbhāvato animittaṃ. Antogāme jātānaṃ hi bahigāme pi attabhāvo patati, bahigāme jātānam pi antogāme, tathā thalajānaṃ vā jale, jalajānaṃ vā thale ti anekappakārato vitthāretabbaṃ.

Gati pi “ito cutena idha nibbattitabban” ti evaṃ vavatthānâbhāvato animittā. Devalokato hi cutā manussesu pi nibbattanti, manussalokato cutā devalokādīnam pi yattha katthaci nibbattantī ti evaṃ yantayuttagoṇo viya gatipañcake loko samparivattatī ti. Evaṃ animittato maraṇaṃ anussaritabbaṃ.

Addhāna-paricchedato ti manussānaṃ jīvitassa nāma etarahi paritto addhā, uo ciraṃ jīvati, so vassasataṃ, appaṃ vā bhiyyo. Ten’āha Bhagavā:

“Appam idaṃ, bhikkhave, manussānaṃ āyu, gamanīyo samparāyo, kattabbaṃ kusalaṃ, caritabbaṃ brahmacariyaṃ, natthi jātassa amaraṇaṃ. Yo, bhikkhave, ciraṃ jīvati, so vassasataṃ, appaṃ vā bhiyyo ti…

Appam āyu manussānaṃ, hīḷeyya naṃ suporiso,
careyy’ādittasīso va, natthi maccuss’anāgamo” ti. (saṃ. ni. 1.145)

Aparam pi āha:

“Bhūtapubbaṃ, bhikkhave, Arako nāma satthā ahosī” ti (a. ni.)

sabbam pi sattahi upamāhi alaṅkataṃ suttaṃ vitthāretabbaṃ.

Aparam pi āha:

“Yo câyaṃ, bhikkhave, bhikkhu evaṃ maraṇassatiṃ bhāveti: aho vatâhaṃ rattindivaṃ jīveyyaṃ, Bhagavato sāsanaṃ manasikareyyaṃ, bahuṃ vata me kataṃ assā ti.

Yo câyaṃ, bhikkhave, bhikkhu evaṃ maraṇassatiṃ bhāveti: aho vatâhaṃ divasaṃ jīveyyaṃ, Bhagavato sāsanaṃ manasikareyyaṃ, bahuṃ vata me kataṃ assā ti.

Yo câyaṃ, bhikkhave, bhikkhu evaṃ maraṇassatiṃ bhāveti: aho vatâhaṃ tadantaraṃ jīveyyaṃ, yadantaraṃ ekaṃ piṇḍapātaṃ bhuñjāmi, Bhagavato sāsanaṃ manasikareyyaṃ, bahuṃ vata me kataṃ assā ti.

Yo câyaṃ, bhikkhave, bhikkhu evaṃ maraṇassatiṃ bhāveti: aho vatâhaṃ tadantaraṃ jīveyyaṃ, yadantaraṃ cattāro pañca ālope saṅkhāditvā ajjhoharāmi, Bhagavato sāsanaṃ manasikareyyaṃ, bahuṃ vata me kataṃ assā ti. Ime vuccanti, bhikkhave, bhikkhū pamattā viharanti, dandhaṃ maraṇassatiṃ bhāventi āsavānaṃ khayāya.

Yo ca khvâyaṃ, bhikkhave, bhikkhu evaṃ maraṇassatiṃ bhāveti: aho vatâhaṃ tadantaraṃ jīveyyaṃ, yadantaraṃ ekaṃ ālopaṃ saṅkhāditvā ajjhoharāmi, Bhagavato sāsanaṃ manasikareyyaṃ, bahuṃ vata me kataṃ assā ti.

Yo câyaṃ, bhikkhave, bhikkhu evaṃ maraṇassatiṃ bhāveti: aho vatâhaṃ tadantaraṃ jīveyyaṃ, yadantaraṃ assasitvā vā passasāmi, passasitvā vā assasāmi, Bhagavato sāsanaṃ manasikareyyaṃ, bahuṃ vata me kataṃ assā ti. Ime vuccanti, bhikkhave, bhikkhū appamattā viharanti, tikkhaṃ maraṇassatiṃ bhāventi āsavānaṃ khayāyā” ti. (a. ni. 6.19)

Evaṃ catupañcâlopa-saṅkhādana-mattaṃ avissāsiyo paritto jīvitassa addhā ti evaṃ addhāna-paricchedato maraṇaṃ anussaritabbaṃ.

Khaṇaparittato ti paramatthato hi atiparitto sattānaṃ jīvitakkhaṇo ekacittappavattimatto yeva. Yathā nāma rathacakkaṃ pavattamānam pi eken’eva nemippadesena pavattati, tiṭṭhamānam pi eken’eva tiṭṭhati, evam eva ekacittakkhaṇikaṃ sattānaṃ jīvitaṃ, tasmiṃ citte niruddhamatte satto niruddho ti vuccati. Yath’āha:

“Atīte cittakkhaṇe jīvittha, na jīvati, na jīvissati, anāgate cittakkhaṇe na jīvittha, na jīvati, jīvissati, paccuppanne cittakkhaṇe na jīvittha, jīvati, na jīvissati.

Jīvitaṃ attabhāvo ca sukhadukkhā ca kevalā
ekacittasamāyuttā lahu so vattate khaṇo.

Ye niruddhā marantassa tiṭṭhamānassa vā idha,
sabbe pi sadisā khandhā gatā appaṭisandhikā.

Anibbattena na jāto, paccuppannena jīvati,
cittabhaṅgā mato loko, paññatti paramatthiyā” ti. (mahāni. 39)

Evaṃ khaṇaparittato maraṇaṃ anussaritabbaṃ.

Iti imesaṃ aṭṭhannaṃ ākārānaṃ aññataraññatarena anussarato pi punappunaṃ manasikāravasena cittaṃ āsevanaṃ labhati, maraṇârammaṇā sati santiṭṭhati, nīvaraṇāni vikkhambhanti, jhānaṅgāni pātubhavanti. Sabhāvadhammattā pana saṃvejanīyattā ca ārammaṇassa appanaṃ appatvā upacārappattam eva jhānaṃ hoti.

Lokuttarajjhānaṃ pana dutiya-catutthāni ca āruppajjhānāni sabhāvadhamme pi bhāvanāvisesena appanaṃ pāpuṇanti. Visuddhi-bhāvanânukkamavasena hi lokuttaraṃ appanaṃ pāpuṇāti, ārammaṇâtikkama-bhāvanāvasena āruppaṃ. Appanāpattass’eva hi jhānassa ārammaṇa-samatikkamana-mattaṃ tattha hoti. Idha pana tad ubhayam pi natthi, tasmā upacārappattam eva jhānaṃ hoti.

Tad etaṃ maraṇassatibalena uppannattā maraṇassat’icc eva saṅkhaṃ gacchati.

Imañ ca pana maraṇassatiṃ anuyutto bhikkhu satataṃ appamatto hoti, sabbabhavesu anabhiratisaññaṃ paṭilabhati, jīvitanikantiṃ jahāti, pāpagarahī hoti, asannidhibahulo parikkhāresu vigata-malamacchero, aniccasaññā c’assa paricayaṃ gacchati, tadanusāren’eva dukkhasaññā anattasaññā ca upaṭṭhāti, yathā abhāvitamaraṇā sattā sahasā vāḷamiga-yakkha-sappa-cora-vadhakâbhibhūtā viya maraṇasamaye bhayaṃ santāsaṃ sammohaṃ āpajjanti, evaṃ anāpajjitvā abhayo asammūḷho kālaṃ karoti, sace diṭṭhe va dhamme amataṃ n’ārādheti11, kāyassa bhedā sugatiparāyano hoti.

Imasmiṃ hi paṭikkūlamanasikāra-kammaṭṭhāne yo pi tipiṭako hoti, tenâpi manasikārakāle paṭhamaṃ vācāya sajjhāyo kātabbo. Ekaccassa hi sajjhāyaṃ karontass’eva kammaṭṭhānaṃ pākaṭaṃ hoti, Malayavāsī Mahādevattherassa santike uggahita-kammaṭṭhānānaṃ dvinnaṃ therānaṃ viya. Thero kira tehi kammaṭṭhānaṃ yācito “cattāro māse imaṃ yeva sajjhāyaṃ karothā” ti dvattiṃsâkārapāḷiṃ adāsi. Te kiñcâpi nesaṃ dve tayo nikāyā paguṇā, padakkhiṇaggāhitāya pana cattāro māse dvattiṃsâkāraṃ sajjhāyantā va sotāpannā ahesuṃ. Tasmā kammaṭṭhānaṃ kathentena ācariyena antevāsiko vattabbo “paṭhamaṃ tāva vācāya sajjhāyaṃ karohī” ti.

Karontena ca tacapañcakâdī ni paricchinditvā anuloma-paṭiloma-vasena sajjhāyo kātabbo. “Kesā lomā nakhā dantā taco” ti hi vatvā puna paṭilomato “taco dantā nakhā lomā kesā” ti vattabbaṃ.

Evaṃ kālasataṃ kālasahassaṃ kālasatasahassam pi vācāya sajjhāyo kātabbo. Vacasā sajjhāyena hi kammaṭṭhāna-tanti paguṇā hoti, na ito c’ito ca cittaṃ vidhāvati, koṭṭhāsā pākaṭā honti, hattha-saṅkhalikā viya vatipāda-panti viya ca khāyanti.

Yathā pana vacasā, tath’eva manasā pi sajjhāyo kātabbo. Vacasā sajjhāyo hi manasā sajjhāyassa paccayo hoti, manasā sajjhāyo lakkhaṇapaṭivedhassa paccayo hoti.

Vaṇṇato ti kesâdīnaṃ vaṇṇo vavatthapetabbo. Saṇṭhānato ti tesañ ñeva saṇṭhānaṃ vavatthapetabbaṃ. Disato ti, imasmiṃ hi sarīre nābhito uddhaṃ uparimadisā, adho heṭṭhimadisā, tasmā “ayaṃ koṭṭhāso imissā nāma disāyā” ti disā vavatthapetabbā. Okāsato ti “ayaṃ koṭṭhāso imasmiṃ nāma okāse patiṭṭhito” ti evaṃ tassa tassa okāso vavatthapetabbo.

Paricchedato ti sabhāga-paricchedo visabhāga-paricchedo ti dve paricchedā. Tattha “ayaṃ koṭṭhāso heṭṭhā ca upari ca tiriyañ ca iminā nāma paricchinno” ti evaṃ sabhāga-paricchedo veditabbo. “Kesā na lomā, lomā pi na kesā” ti evaṃ amissakatāvasena visabhāga-paricchedo veditabbo.

Evaṃ sattadhā uggahakosallaṃ ācikkhantena pana “idaṃ kammaṭṭhānaṃ asukasmiṃ sutte paṭikkūlavasena kathitaṃ, asukasmiṃ dhātuvasenā” ti ñatvā ācikkhitabbaṃ. Idañ hi Mahāsatipaṭṭhāne (dī. ni. 2.377) paṭikkūlavasen’eva kathitaṃ, Mahāhatthipadopama- (ma. ni. 1.300 ādayo) Mahārāhulovāda- (ma. ni. 2.113 ādayo) Dhātuvibhaṅgesu (ma. ni. 3.342 ādayo) dhātuvasena kathitaṃ. Ekantarikāya hi manasikaronto yathā nāma akusalo puriso dvattiṃsapadaṃ nisseṇiṃ ekantarikāya ārohanto kilantakāyo patati, na ārohanaṃ sampādeti, evam eva bhāvanāsampattivasena adhigantabbassa assādassa anadhigamā kilantacitto patati, na bhāvanaṃ sampādeti.

Anupubbato manasikarontenâpi ca nâtisīghato manasikātabbaṃ. Atisīghato manasikaroto hi yathā nāma tiyojana-maggaṃ paṭipajjitvā okkamana-vissajjanaṃ asallakkhetvā sīghena javena satakkhattum pi gamanâgamanaṃ karoto purisassa, kiñcâpi addhānaṃ parikkhayaṃ gacchati, atha kho pucchitvā va gantabbaṃ hoti, evam eva kevalaṃ kammaṭṭhānaṃ pariyosānaṃ pāpuṇāti, avibhūtaṃ pana hoti, na visesaṃ āvahati, tasmā nâtisīghato manasikātabbaṃ.

Yathā ca nâtisīghato, evaṃ nâtisaṇikato pi. Atisaṇikato manasikaroto hi yathā nāma tadahe va tiyojana-maggaṃ gantukāmassa purisassa antarāmagge rukkha-pabbata-taḷākâdīsu vilambamānassa maggo parikkhayaṃ na gacchati, dvîha-tîhena pariyosāpetabbo hoti, evam eva kammaṭṭhānaṃ pariyosānaṃ na gacchati, visesâdhigamassa paccayo na hoti.

Vikkhepa-paṭibāhanato ti kammaṭṭhānaṃ vissajjetvā bahiddhā puthuttârammaṇe cetaso vikkhepo paṭibāhitabbo. Appaṭibāhato hi yathā nāma ekapadikaṃ papātamaggaṃ paṭipannassa purisassa akkamanapadaṃ asallakkhetvā ito c’ito ca vilokayato padavāro virajjhati, tato sataporise papāte patitabbaṃ hoti, evam eva bahiddhā vikkhepe sati kammaṭṭhānaṃ parihāyati paridhaṃsati. Tasmā vikkhe-papaṭibāhanato manasikātabbaṃ.

Paṇṇatti-samatikkamanato ti yâyaṃ kesā lomā ti ādikā paṇṇatti, taṃ atikkamitvā paṭikkūlan ti cittaṃ ṭhapetabbaṃ. Yathā hi udaka-dullabhakāle manussā araññe udapānaṃ disvā tattha tālapaṇṇâdikaṃ kiñcid eva saññāṇaṃ bandhitvā tena saññāṇena āgantvā nhāyanti c’eva pivanti ca, yadā pana nesaṃ abhiṇha-sañcārena āgatâgatapadaṃ pākaṭaṃ hoti, tadā saññāṇena kiccaṃ na hoti, icchiticchitakkhaṇe gantvā nhāyanti c’eva pivanti ca, evam eva pubbabhāge kesā lomā ti paṇṇattivasena manasikaroto paṭikkūlabhāvo pākaṭo hoti, atha kesā lomā ti paṇṇattiṃ samatikkamitvā paṭikkūlabhāve yeva cittaṃ ṭhapetabbaṃ.

Anupubba-muñcanato ti yo yo koṭṭhāso na upaṭṭhāti, taṃ taṃ muñcantena anupubba-muñcanato manasikātabbaṃ. Ādikammikassa hi kesā ti manasikaroto manasikāro gantvā muttan ti imaṃ pariyosāna-koṭṭhāsam eva āhacca tiṭṭhati, muttan ti ca manasikaroto manasikāro gantvā kesā ti imaṃ ādi-koṭṭhāsam eva āhacca tiṭṭhati, ath’assa manasikaroto manasikaroto keci koṭṭhāsā upaṭṭhahanti, keci na upaṭṭhahanti, tena ye ye upaṭṭhahanti, tesu tesu tāva kammaṃ kātabbaṃ, yāva dvīsu upaṭṭhitesu tesam pi eko suṭṭhutaraṃ upaṭṭhahati, evaṃ upaṭṭhitaṃ pana tam eva punappunaṃ manasikarontena appanā uppādetabbā.

Tatrâyaṃ upamā: yathā hi dvattiṃsa-tālake tālavane vasantaṃ makkaṭaṃ gahetukāmo luddo ādimhi ṭhitatālassa paṇṇaṃ sarena vijjhitvā ukkuṭṭhiṃ kareyya, atha kho so makkaṭo paṭipāṭiyā tasmiṃ tasmiṃ tāle patitvā pariyantatālam eva gaccheyya, tattha pi gantvā luddena tath’eva kate puna ten’eva nayena āditālaṃ āgaccheyya, so evaṃ punappunaṃ paripātiyamāno12 ukkuṭṭhukkuṭṭhi-ṭṭhāne yeva uṭṭhahitvā anukkamena ekasmiṃ tāle nipatitvā tassa vemajjhe makuḷa-tālapaṇṇa-sūciṃ daḷhaṃ gahetvā vijjhiyamāno pi na uṭṭhaheyya, evaṃsampadam idaṃ daṭṭhabbaṃ.

Tatr’idaṃ opamma-saṃsandanaṃ: yathā hi tālavane dvattiṃsa tālā, evaṃ imasmiṃ kāye dvattiṃsa koṭṭhāsā, makkaṭo viya cittaṃ, luddo viya yogâvacaro. Makkaṭassa dvattiṃsa-tālake tālavane nivāso viya yogino cittassa dvattiṃsa-koṭṭhāsake kāye ārammaṇavasena anusañcaraṇaṃ. Luddena ādimhi ṭhitatālassa paṇṇaṃ sarena vijjhitvā ukkuṭṭhiyā katāya makkaṭassa tasmiṃ tasmiṃ tāle patitvā pariyantatāla-gamanaṃ viya yogino kesā ti manasikāre āraddhe paṭipāṭiyā gantvā pariyosāna-koṭṭhāse yeva cittassa saṇṭhānaṃ. Puna paccāgamane pi es’eva nayo. Punappunaṃ paripātiyamānassa makkaṭassa ukkuṭṭhukkuṭṭhi-ṭṭhāne uṭṭhānaṃ viya punappunaṃ manasikaroto kesuci kesuci upaṭṭhitesu anupaṭṭhahante vissajjetvā upaṭṭhitesu parikammakaraṇaṃ. Anukkamena ekasmiṃ tāle nipatitvā tassa majjhe13 makuḷa-tālapaṇṇa-sūciṃ daḷhaṃ gahetvā vijjhiyamānassa pi anuṭṭhānaṃ viya avasāne dvīsu upaṭṭhitesu yo suṭṭhutaraṃ upaṭṭhāti, tam eva punappunaṃ manasikaritvā appanāya uppādanaṃ.

Aparā pi upamā: yathā nāma piṇḍapātiko bhikkhu dvattiṃsa-kulaṃ gāmaṃ upanissāya vasanto paṭhamagehe yeva dve bhikkhā labhitvā parato ekaṃ vissajjeyya, puna divase tisso labhitvā parato dve vissajjeyya, tatiyadivase ādimhi yeva pattapūraṃ labhitvā āsanasālaṃ gantvā paribhuñjeyya, evaṃsampadam idaṃ daṭṭhabbaṃ.

Dvattiṃsa-kulagāmo viya hi dvattiṃsâkāro, piṇḍapātiko viya yogâvacaro. Tassa taṃ gāmaṃ upanissāya vāso viya yogino dvattiṃsâkāre parikammakaraṇaṃ. Paṭhamagehe dve bhikkhā labhitvā parato ekissā vissajjanaṃ viya dutiyadivase tisso labhitvā parato dvinnaṃ vissajjanaṃ viya ca manasikaroto manasikaroto anupaṭṭhahante vissajjetvā upaṭṭhitesu yāva koṭṭhāsa-dvaye parikammakaraṇaṃ. Tatiyadivase ādimhi yeva pattapūraṃ labhitvā āsanasālāyaṃ nisīditvā paribhogo viya dvīsu yo suṭṭhutaraṃ upaṭṭhāti, tam eva punappunaṃ manasikaritvā appanāya uppādanaṃ.

Appanāto ti appanā-koṭṭhāsato. “Kesâdīsu ekekasmiṃ koṭṭhāse appanā hotī” ti veditabbā ti ayam ev’ettha adhippāyo.

Tayo ca suttantā ti Adhicittaṃ, Sītibhāvo, Bojjhaṅgakosallan ti ime tayo suttantā vīriya-samādhi-yojanatthaṃ veditabbā ti ayam ettha adhippāyo.

“Adhicittam anuyuttena, bhikkhave, bhikkhunā tīṇi nimittāni kālena kālaṃ manasikātabbāni, kālena kālaṃ samādhinimittaṃ manasikātabbaṃ, kālena kālaṃ paggahanimittaṃ manasikātabbaṃ, kālena kālaṃ upekkhānimittaṃ manasikātabbaṃ. Sace, bhikkhave, adhicittam anuyutto bhikkhu ekantaṃ samādhinimittañ ñeva manasikareyya, ṭhānaṃ taṃ cittaṃ kosajjāya saṃvatteyya. Sace, bhikkhave, adhicittam anuyutto bhikkhu ekantaṃ paggahanimittañ ñeva manasikareyya, ṭhānaṃ taṃ cittaṃ uddhaccāya saṃvatteyya. Yattha takkoṭakā gaṇḍuppādakā tālahīrakā sūcimukhakā paṭatanta-suttakā icc evamādi-dvattiṃsakula-ppabhedā kimayo ākulabyākulā saṇḍasaṇḍacārino hutvā nivasanti, ye pānabhojanâdimhi avijjamāne ullaṅghitvā viravantā hadayamaṃsaṃ abhihananti, pānabhojanâdi-ajjhoharaṇa-velāyañ ca uddhaṃmukhā hutvā paṭhamajjhohaṭe dve tayo ālope turitaturitā viluppanti, yaṃ tesaṃ kimīnaṃ sūtigharaṃ vaccakuṭi gilānasālā susānañ ca hoti.

Yattha seyyathā pi nāma caṇḍāla-gāmadvāre candanikāya nidāghasamaye thūlaphusitake deve vassante udakena vuyhamānaṃ mutta-karīsa-camma-aṭṭhi-nhāru-khaṇḍa-kheḷa-siṅghāṇikā-lohita-ppabhuti-nānākuṇapa-jātaṃ nipatitvā kaddamodakâluḷitaṃ dvîha-tîhaccayena sañjāta-kimikulaṃ sūriyâtapa-santāpa-vega-kuthitaṃ upari pheṇa-pupphuḷake muñcantaṃ abhinīlavaṇṇaṃ parama-duggandha-jegucchaṃ, n’eva upagantuṃ na daṭṭhuṃ araharūpataṃ āpajjitvā tiṭṭhati, pageva ghāyituṃ vā sāyituṃ vā?

Evam eva nānappakāraṃ pāna-bhojanâdi dantamusala-sañcuṇṇitaṃ jivhāhattha-parivattita-kheḷalālā-palibuddhaṃ taṅkhaṇa-vigatavaṇṇagandharasâdi-sampadaṃ, tantavāyakhali-suvānavamathu-sadisaṃ nipatitvā pitta-semha-vāta-paliveṭhitaṃ hutvā udaraggi-santāpa-vega-kuthitaṃ kimikulâkulaṃ uparûpari pheṇa-pupphuḷakāni muñcantaṃ parama-kasambu-duggandha-jeguccha-bhāvaṃ āpajjitvā tiṭṭhati, yaṃ sutvā pi pāna-bhojanâdīsu amanuññatā saṇṭhāti, pageva paññācakkhunā avaloketvā?

Yattha ca patitaṃ pāna-bhojanâdi pañcadhā vivekaṃ gacchati: ekaṃ bhāgaṃ pāṇakā khādanti, ekaṃ bhāgaṃ udaraggi jhāpeti, eko bhāgo muttaṃ hoti, eko bhāgo karīsaṃ, eko bhāgo rasabhāvaṃ āpajjitvā soṇita-maṃsâdīni upabrūhayati.

Sedapariggaṇhakena ca yoginā kesaloma-kūpa-vivare pūretvā ṭhitavasen’eva sedo manasikātabbo. Gaṇentena ca paṭhamaṃ dandhagaṇanāya dhaññamāpaka-gaṇanāya gaṇetabbaṃ. Dhaññamāpako hi nāḷiṃ pūretvā “ekan” ti vatvā okirati, puna pūrento kiñci kacavaraṃ disvā taṃ chaḍḍento “ekaṃ ekan” ti vadati, esa nayo “dve dve” ti ādīsu. Cheko hi gopālako sakkharâdayo27 ucchaṅgena gahetvā rajjudaṇḍa-hattho pāto va vajaṃ gantvā gāvo piṭṭhiyaṃ paharitvā paligha-tthambha-matthake nisinno dvārappattaṃ dvārappattaṃ yeva gāviṃ “ekā dve” ti sakkharaṃ khipitvā gaṇeti. Itaresu pana tīsu catukkesu yasmā visuṃ kammaṭṭhāna-bhāvanānayo nāma natthi, tasmā anupadavaṇṇanā-nayen’eva tesaṃ evaṃ attho veditabbo.

Pītipaṭisaṃvedī ti pītiṃ paṭisaṃviditaṃ karonto, pākaṭaṃ karonto, assasissāmi passasissāmī ti sikkhati. Tattha dvīh’ākārehi pīti paṭisaṃviditā hoti: ārammaṇato ca asammohato ca.

Yasmā pan’esa catasso yoniyo, pañca gatiyo, satta viññāṇaṭṭhitiyo, nava ca sattâvāse aparâparabhāvāya vinanato ābandhanato saṃsibbanato vānan ti laddhavohārāya taṇhāya nikkhanto nissaṭo visaṃyutto, tasmā nibbānan ti vuccatī ti.

Tass’evaṃ mada-nimmadanatâdi-guṇavasena upasamaṃ anussarato,

“N’eva tasmiṃ samaye rāgapariyuṭṭhitaṃ cittaṃ hoti, na dosa… na mohapariyuṭṭhitaṃ cittaṃ hoti, ujugatam ev’assa tasmiṃ samaye cittaṃ hoti upasamaṃ ārabbhā” ti (VII.65)

Buddhânussati-ādīsu vuttanayen’eva vikkhambhita-nīvaraṇassa ekakkhaṇe jhānaṅgāni uppajjanti. Upasamaguṇānaṃ pana gambhīratāya nānappakāra-guṇânussaraṇâdhimuttatāya vā appanaṃ appatvā upacārappattam eva jhānaṃ hoti. Tad etam upasamaguṇânussaraṇavasena 36 upasamânussat’icc eva saṅkhyaṃ gacchati.
