Brahmavihārânantaraṃ uddiṭṭhesu pana catūsu āruppesu ākāsānañcâyatanaṃ tāva bhāvetukāmo,
“Dissante kho pana rūpâdhikaraṇaṃ daṇḍâdāna-satthâdāna-kalaha-viggaha-vivādā ‘natthi kho pan’etaṃ sabbaso āruppe’ ti, so iti paṭisaṅkhāya rūpānaṃ yeva nibbidāya virāgāya nirodhāya paṭipanno hotī” ti (ma. ni. 2.103)
vacanato etesaṃ daṇḍâdānâdīnañ c’eva cakkhu-sota-rogâdīnañ ca ābādha-sahassānaṃ vasena karajarūpe ādīnavaṃ disvā tassa samatikkamāya ṭhapetvā paricchinnâkāsakasiṇaṃ navasu pathavīkasiṇâdīsu aññatarasmiṃ catutthajjhānaṃ uppādeti.

Tassa kiñcâpi rūpāvacara-catutthajjhānavasena karajarūpaṃ atikkantaṃ hoti, atha kho kasiṇarūpam pi yasmā tappaṭibhāgam eva, tasmā tam pi samatikkamitukāmo hoti.

Kathaṃ? Yathā ahibhīruko puriso araññe sappena anubaddho vegena palāyitvā palātaṭṭhāne lekhācittaṃ tālapaṇṇaṃ vā valliṃ vā rajjuṃ vā phalitāya vā pana pathaviyā phalitantaraṃ disvā bhāyat’eva uttasat’eva, n’eva naṃ dakkhitukāmo hoti. Yathā ca anatthakārinā veripurisena saddhiṃ ekagāme vasamāno puriso tena vadha-bandha-gehajhāpanâdīhi upadduto aññaṃ gāmaṃ vasanatthāya gantvā tatrâpi verinā samāna-rūpa-sadda-samudācāraṃ purisaṃ disvā bhāyat’eva uttasat’eva, n’eva naṃ dakkhitukāmo hoti.

Tatr’idaṃ opamma-saṃsandanaṃ. Tesaṃ hi purisānaṃ ahinā verinā vā upadduta-kālo viya bhikkhuno ārammaṇavasena karajarūpa-samaṅgi-kālo. Tesaṃ vegena palāyana-aññagāma-gamanāni viya bhikkhuno rūpāvacara-catutthajjhānavasena karajarūpa-samatikkamana-kālo. Tesaṃ palātaṭṭhāne ca aññagāme ca lekhācitta-tālapaṇṇâdīni c’eva verisadisaṃ purisañ ca disvā bhaya-santāsa-adassanakāmatā viya bhikkhuno kasiṇarūpam pi “tappaṭibhāgam eva idan” ti sallakkhetvā tam pi samatikkamitukāmatā. Sūkarâbhihatasunakha-pisācabhīrukâdikā pi c’ettha upamā veditabbā.

Evaṃ so tasmā catutthajjhānassa ārammaṇabhūtā kasiṇarūpā nibbijja pakkamitukāmo pañcah’ākārehi ciṇṇavasī hutvā paguṇa-rūpāvacara-catutthajjhānato vuṭṭhāya tasmiṃ jhāne “imaṃ mayā nibbiṇṇaṃ rūpaṃ ārammaṇaṃ karotī” ti ca “āsanna-somanassa-paccatthikan” ti ca “santavimokkhato oḷārikan” ti ca ādīnavaṃ passati. Aṅgoḷārikatā pan’ettha natthi. Yath’eva h’etaṃ rūpaṃ duvaṅgikaṃ, evaṃ āruppāni pī ti.

So tattha evaṃ ādīnavaṃ disvā nikantiṃ pariyādāya ākāsānañcâyatanaṃ santato anantato manasikaritvā cakkavāḷa-pariyantaṃ vā yattakaṃ icchati tattakaṃ vā kasiṇaṃ pattharitvā tena phuṭṭhokāsaṃ “ākāso ākāso” ti vā “ananto ākāso” ti vā manasikaronto ugghāṭeti.

Kasiṇaṃ ugghāṭento hi n’eva kilañjaṃ viya saṃvelleti, na kapālato pūvaṃ viya uddharati, kevalaṃ pana taṃ n’eva āvajjeti, na manasikaroti, na paccavekkhati, anāvajjento amanasikaronto apaccavekkhanto ca, aññadatthu tena phuṭṭhokāsaṃ “ākāso ākāso” ti manasikaronto kasiṇaṃ ugghāṭeti nāma.

Kasiṇam pi ugghāṭiyamānaṃ n’eva ubbaṭṭati na vivaṭṭati, kevalaṃ imassa amanasikārañ ca “ākāso ākāso” ti manasikārañ ca paṭicca ugghāṭitaṃ nāma hoti, kasiṇugghāṭimâkāsa-mattaṃ paññāyati. Kasiṇugghāṭimâkāsan ti vā kasiṇaphuṭṭhokāso ti vā kasiṇavivittâkāsan ti vā sabbam etaṃ ekam eva.

So taṃ kasiṇugghāṭimâkāsa-nimittaṃ “ākāso ākāso” ti punappunaṃ āvajjeti, takkâhataṃ vitakkâhataṃ karoti. Tass’evaṃ punappunaṃ āvajjayato takkâhataṃ vitakkâhataṃ karoto nīvaraṇāni vikkhambhanti, sati santiṭṭhati, upacārena cittaṃ samādhiyati. So taṃ nimittaṃ punappunaṃ āsevati, bhāveti, bahulīkaroti.

Tass’evaṃ punappunaṃ āvajjayato manasikaroto pathavīkasiṇâdīsu rūpāvacara-cittaṃ viya ākāse ākāsānañcâyatana-cittaṃ appeti. Idhâpi hi purimabhāge tīṇi cattāri vā javanāni kāmāvacarāni upekkhāvedanā-sampayuttān’eva honti, catutthaṃ pañcamaṃ vā arūpāvacaraṃ. Sesaṃ pathavīkasiṇe vuttanayam eva.

Ayaṃ pana viseso. Evaṃ uppanne arūpāvacaracitte so bhikkhu yathā nāma yāna-pputoḷi1-kumbhi-mukhâdīnaṃ aññataraṃ nīla-pilotikāya vā pīta-lohitodātâdīnaṃ vā aññatarāya pilotikāya bandhitvā pekkhamāno puriso vātavegena vā aññena vā kenaci apanītāya pilotikāya ākāsaṃ yeva pekkhamāno tiṭṭheyya, evam eva pubbe kasiṇamaṇḍalaṃ jhānacakkhunā pekkhamāno viharitvā “ākāso ākāso” ti iminā parikamma-manasikārena sahasā apanīte tasmiṃ nimitte ākāsañ ñeva pekkhamāno viharati.

“Sabbaso rūpasaññānaṃ samatikkamā, paṭighasaññānaṃ atthaṅgamā, nānattasaññānaṃ amanasikārā ‘ananto ākāso’ ti ākāsānañcâyatanaṃ upasampajja viharatī” ti (vibha. 508; dī. ni. 2.129)

Tattha sabbaso ti sabbâkārena, sabbāsaṃ vā anavasesānan ti attho. Rūpasaññānan ti saññāsīsena vutta-rūpāvacarajjhānānañ c’eva tadārammaṇānañ ca. Rūpāvacarajjhānam pi hi rūpan ti vuccati,
“Rūpī rūpāni passatī” ti (dī. ni. 2.129)
ādīsu, tassa ārammaṇam pi
“Bahiddhā rūpāni passati suvaṇṇadubbaṇṇānī” ti (dī. ni. 2.173)
ādīsu. Tasmā idha rūpe saññā rūpasaññā ti evaṃ saññāsīsena vutta-rūpāvacarajjhānass’etaṃ adhivacanaṃ. Rūpaṃ saññā assā ti rūpasaññaṃ, rūpaṃ assa nāman ti vuttaṃ hoti, 2 pathavīkasiṇâdi-bhedassa tadārammaṇassa c’etaṃ adhivacanan ti veditabbaṃ.

Samatikkamā ti virāgā nirodhā ca. Kiṃ vuttaṃ hoti? Etāsaṃ kusala-vipāka-kiriya-vasena pañcadasannaṃ jhāna-saṅkhātānaṃ rūpasaññānaṃ, etesañ ca pathavīkasiṇâdivasena navannaṃ ārammaṇa-saṅkhātānaṃ rūpasaññānaṃ, sabbâkārena anavasesānaṃ vā virāgā ca nirodhā ca, virāgahetuñ c’eva nirodhahetuñ ca ākāsānañcâyatanaṃ upasampajja viharati. Na hi sakkā sabbaso anatikkanta-rūpasaññena etaṃ upasampajja viharitun ti.

Tattha yasmā ārammaṇe avirattassa saññā-samatikkamo na hoti, samatikkantāsu ca saññāsu ārammaṇaṃ samatikkantam eva hoti, tasmā ārammaṇa-samatikkamaṃ avatvā,
“Tattha katamā rūpasaññā? Rūpāvacara-samāpattiṃ samāpannassa vā upapannassa vā diṭṭhadhamma-sukhavihārissa vā saññā sañjānanā sañjānitattaṃ, imā vuccanti rūpasaññāyo. Imā rūpasaññāyo atikkanto hoti vītikkanto samatikkanto, tena vuccati sabbaso rūpasaññānaṃ samatikkamā” ti (vibha. 602)
evaṃ Vibhaṅge saññānaṃ yeva samatikkamo vutto. Yasmā pana ārammaṇa-samatikkamena pattabbā etā samāpattiyo, na ekasmiñ ñeva ārammaṇe paṭhamajjhānâdīni viya, tasmā ayaṃ ārammaṇa-samatikkama-vasenâpi atthavaṇṇanā katā ti veditabbā.

Paṭighasaññānaṃ atthaṅgamā ti cakkhâdīnaṃ vatthūnaṃ, rūpâdīnaṃ ārammaṇānañ ca paṭighātena samuppannā saññā paṭighasaññā, rūpasaññâdīnaṃ etam adhivacanaṃ. Yath’āha:
“Tattha katamā paṭighasaññā? Rūpasaññā saddasaññā gandhasaññā rasasaññā phoṭṭhabbasaññā, imā vuccanti paṭighasaññāyo” ti. (vibha. 603)
Tāsaṃ kusalavipākānaṃ pañcannaṃ, akusalavipākānaṃ pañcannan ti sabbaso dasannam pi paṭighasaññānaṃ atthaṅgamā pahānā asamuppādā appavattiṃ katvā ti vuttaṃ hoti.

Kāmañ c’etā paṭhamajjhānâdīni samāpannassâpi na santi. Na hi tasmiṃ samaye pañcadvāravasena cittaṃ pavattati. Evaṃ sante pi, aññattha pahīnānaṃ sukhadukkhānaṃ catutthajjhāne viya, sakkāyadiṭṭhâdīnaṃ tatiyamagge viya ca imasmiṃ jhāne ussāha-jananatthaṃ imassa jhānassa pasaṃsāvasena etāsam ettha vacanaṃ veditabbaṃ.

Atha vā kiñcâpi tā rūpāvacaraṃ samāpannassâpi na santi, atha kho na pahīnattā na santi. Na hi rūpavirāgāya rūpāvacara-bhāvanā saṃvattati, rūpâyattā ca etāsaṃ pavatti, ayaṃ pana bhāvanā rūpavirāgāya saṃvattati, tasmā tā ettha pahīnā ti vattuṃ vaṭṭati. Na kevalañ ca vattuṃ, ekaṃsen’eva evaṃ dhāretum pi vaṭṭati.

Tāsañ hi ito pubbe appahīnattā yeva paṭhamaṃ jhānaṃ samāpannassa “saddo kaṇṭako” ti (a. ni. 10.72) vutto Bhagavatā, idha ca pahīnattā yeva arūpasamāpattīnaṃ āneñjatā3 (vibha. 226) santavimokkhatā4 (ma. ni. 1.66) ca vuttā. Āḷāro ca Kālāmo arūpasamāpanno pañcamattāni sakaṭasatāni nissāya nissāya atikkamantāni n’eva addasa, na pana saddaṃ assosī ti (dī. ni. 2.192).

Nānattasaññānaṃ amanasikārā ti nānatte vā gocare pavattānaṃ saññānaṃ, nānattānaṃ vā saññānaṃ. Yasmā hi etā,
“Tattha katamā nānattasaññā? Asamāpannassa manodhātu-samaṅgissa vā manoviññāṇadhātu-samaṅgissa vā saññā sañjānanā sañjānitattaṃ, imā vuccanti nānattasaññāyo” ti (vibha. 604)
evaṃ Vibhaṅge vibhajitvā vuttā idha adhippetā asamāpannassa manodhātu-manoviññāṇadhātu-saṅgahitā saññā rūpa-saddâdi-bhede nānatte nānāsabhāve gocare pavattanti. Yasmā c’etā aṭṭha kāmāvacara-kusalasaññā, dvādasâkusalasaññā, ekādasa kāmāvacara-kusalavipākasaññā, dve akusalavipākasaññā, ekādasa kāmāvacara-kiriyasaññā ti evaṃ catucattālīsam pi saññā nānattā nānāsabhāvā aññamaññaṃ asadisā, tasmā nānattasaññā ti vuttā. Tāsaṃ sabbaso nānattasaññānaṃ amanasikārā anāvajjanā asamannāhārā apaccavekkhaṇā. Yasmā tā nâvajjeti, na manasikaroti, na paccavekkhati, tasmā ti vuttaṃ hoti.

Yasmā c’ettha purimā rūpasaññā paṭighasaññā ca iminā jhānena nibbatte bhave pi na vijjanti, pageva tasmiṃ bhave imaṃ jhānaṃ upasampajja viharaṇakāle, tasmā tāsaṃ “samatikkamā atthaṅgamā” ti dvedhā pi abhāvo yeva vutto. Nānattasaññāsu pana yasmā aṭṭha kāmāvacara-kusalasaññā, nava kiriyasaññā, dasâkusalasaññā ti imā sattavīsati saññā iminā jhānena nibbatte bhave vijjanti, tasmā tāsaṃ “amanasikārā” ti vuttan ti veditabbaṃ. Tatrâpi hi imaṃ jhānaṃ upasampajja viharanto tāsaṃ amanasikārā yeva upasampajja viharati, tā pana manasikaronto asamāpanno hotī ti.

Saṅkhepato c’ettha “rūpasaññānaṃ samatikkamā” ti iminā sabba-rūpāvacara-dhammānaṃ pahānaṃ vuttaṃ, “paṭighasaññānaṃ atthaṅgamā nānattasaññānaṃ amanasikārā” ti iminā sabbesaṃ kāmāvacara-citta-cetasikānaṃ pahānañ ca amanasikāro ca vutto ti veditabbo.

Ananto ākāso ti ettha nâssa uppādanto vā vayanto vā paññāyatī ti ananto, ākāso ti kasiṇugghāṭimâkāso vuccati. Manasikāravasenâpi c’ettha anantatā veditabbā. Ten’eva Vibhaṅge vuttaṃ:
“Tasmiṃ ākāse cittaṃ ṭhapeti, saṇṭhapeti, anantaṃ pharati, tena vuccati ananto ākāso” ti. (vibha. 605)

Ākāsānañcâyatanaṃ upasampajja viharatī ti ettha pana nâssa anto ti anantaṃ, ākāsaṃ anantaṃ ākāsânantaṃ, ākāsânantam eva ākāsānañcaṃ, taṃ ākāsānañcaṃ adhiṭṭhānaṭṭhena āyatanam assa sasampayuttadhammassa jhānassa devānaṃ devâyatanam ivā ti ākāsānañcâyatanaṃ. Upasampajja viharatī ti tam ākāsānañcâyatanaṃ patvā nipphādetvā tadanurūpena iriyāpathavihārena viharatī ti.

Viññāṇañcâyatanaṃ bhāvetukāmena pana pañcah’ākārehi ākāsānañcâyatana-samāpattiyaṃ ciṇṇavasībhāvena “āsanna-rūpāvacarajjhāna-paccatthikā ayaṃ samāpatti, no ca viññāṇañcâyatanam iva santā” ti ākāsānañcâyatane ādīnavaṃ disvā, tattha nikantiṃ pariyādāya, viññāṇañcâyatanaṃ santato manasikaritvā taṃ ākāsaṃ pharitvā pavattaviññāṇaṃ “viññāṇaṃ viññāṇan” ti punappunaṃ āvajjitabbaṃ, manasikātabbaṃ, paccavekkhitabbaṃ, takkâhataṃ vitakkâhataṃ kātabbaṃ, “anantaṃ anantan” ti pana na manasikātabbaṃ.

Tass’evaṃ karoto ākāse ākāsānañcâyatanaṃ viya ākāsaphuṭe viññāṇe viññāṇañcâyatana-cittaṃ appeti. Appanānayo pan’ettha vuttanayen’eva veditabbo.

Ārammaṇam pi hi purimanayen’eva ākāsānañcañ ca taṃ, paṭhamassa āruppajjhānassa ārammaṇattā devānaṃ devâyatanaṃ viya adhiṭṭhānaṭṭhena āyatanañ cā ti ākāsānañcâyatanaṃ. Tathā ākāsānañcañ ca taṃ, tassa jhānassa sañjātihetuttā “kambojā assānaṃ āyatanan” ti ādīni viya sañjātidesaṭṭhena āyatanañ cā ti pi ākāsānañcâyatanaṃ. Evam etaṃ jhānañ ca ārammaṇañ cā ti ubhayam pi appavattikaraṇena ca amanasikaraṇena ca samatikkamitvā va yasmā idaṃ viññāṇañcâyatanaṃ upasampajja vihātabbaṃ, tasmā ubhayam p’etaṃ ekajjhaṃ katvā “ākāsānañcâyatanaṃ samatikkammā” ti idaṃ vuttan ti veditabbaṃ.

Anantaṃ viññāṇan ti taṃ yeva “ananto ākāso” ti evaṃ pharitvā pavattaviññāṇaṃ “anantaṃ viññāṇan” ti evaṃ manasikaronto ti vuttaṃ hoti. Manasikāravasena vā anantaṃ. So hi tam ākāsârammaṇaṃ viññāṇaṃ anavasesato manasikaronto “anantan” ti manasikaroti.

Yaṃ pana Vibhaṅge vuttaṃ,
“Anantaṃ viññāṇan ti, taṃ yeva ākāsaṃ viññāṇena phuṭaṃ manasikaroti, anantaṃ pharati, tena vuccati anantaṃ viññāṇan” ti (vibha. 610)
tattha viññāṇenā ti upayogatthe karaṇavacanaṃ veditabbaṃ. Evañ hi Aṭṭhakathâcariyā tassa atthaṃ vaṇṇayanti “anantaṃ pharati, tañ ñeva ākāsaṃ phuṭaṃ viññāṇaṃ manasikarotī” ti vuttaṃ hoti.

Viññāṇañcâyatanaṃ upasampajja viharatī ti ettha pana nâssa anto ti anantaṃ, anantam eva ānañcaṃ, viññāṇaṃ ānañcaṃ viññāṇânañcan ti avatvā viññāṇañcan ti vuttaṃ. Ayañ h’ettha rūḷhīsaddo. Taṃ viññāṇañcaṃ adhiṭṭhānaṭṭhena āyatanam assa sasampayuttadhammassa jhānassa devānaṃ devâyatanam ivā ti viññāṇañcâyatanaṃ. Sesaṃ purimasadisam evā ti.

Ākiñcaññâyatanaṃ bhāvetukāmena pana pañcah’ākārehi viññāṇañcâyatana-samāpattiyaṃ ciṇṇavasībhāvena “āsanna-ākāsānañcâyatana-paccatthikā ayaṃ samāpatti, no ca ākiñcaññâyatanam iva santā” ti viññāṇañcâyatane ādīnavaṃ disvā tattha nikantiṃ pariyādāya ākiñcaññâyatanaṃ santato manasikaritvā tass’eva viññāṇañcâyatanârammaṇa-bhūtassa ākāsānañcâyatana-viññāṇassa abhāvo suññatā vivittâkāro manasikātabbo.

Kathaṃ? Taṃ viññāṇaṃ amanasikaritvā “natthi natthī” ti vā “suññaṃ suññan” ti vā “vivittaṃ vivittan” ti vā punappunaṃ āvajjitabbaṃ, manasikātabbaṃ, paccavekkhitabbaṃ, takkâhataṃ vitakkâhataṃ kātabbaṃ.

Tass’evaṃ tasmiṃ nimitte cittaṃ cārentassa nīvaraṇāni vikkhambhanti, sati santiṭṭhati, upacārena cittaṃ samādhiyati. So taṃ nimittaṃ punappunaṃ āsevati, bhāveti, bahulīkaroti. Tass’evaṃ karoto ākāse phuṭe mahaggataviññāṇe viññāṇañcâyatanaṃ viya tass’eva ākāsaṃ pharitvā pavattassa mahaggataviññāṇassa suñña-vivitta-natthibhāve ākiñcaññâyatana-cittaṃ appeti. Etthâpi ca appanānayo vuttanayen’eva veditabbo.

Ayaṃ pana viseso. Tasmiṃ hi appanācitte uppanne so bhikkhu yathā nāma puriso maṇḍalamāḷâdīsu kenacid eva karaṇīyena sannipatitaṃ bhikkhusaṅghaṃ disvā katthaci gantvā sannipātakiccâvasāne va uṭṭhāya pakkantesu bhikkhūsu āgantvā dvāre ṭhatvā puna taṃ ṭhānaṃ olokento suññam eva passati, vivittam eva passati, nâssa evaṃ hoti “ettakā nāma bhikkhū kālaṅkatā vā disāpakkantā vā” ti, atha kho “suññam idaṃ vivittan” ti natthibhāvam eva passati, evam eva pubbe ākāse pavattita-viññāṇaṃ viññāṇañcâyatana-jjhānacakkhunā passanto viharitvā “natthi natthī” ti ādinā parikamma-manasikārena antarahite tasmiṃ viññāṇe tassa apagama-saṅkhātaṃ abhāvam eva passanto viharati.

Idhâpi sabbaso ti idaṃ vuttanayam eva. Viññāṇañcâyatanan ti etthâpi ca pubbe vuttanayen’eva jhānam pi viññāṇañcâyatanaṃ, ārammaṇam pi. Ārammaṇam pi hi purimanayen’eva viññāṇañcañ ca taṃ, dutiyassa āruppajjhānassa ārammaṇattā devānaṃ devâyatanaṃ viya adhiṭṭhānaṭṭhena āyatanañ cā ti viññāṇañcâyatanaṃ. Tathā viññāṇañcañ ca taṃ, tass’eva jhānassa sañjātihetuttā “kambojā assānaṃ āyatanan” ti ādīni viya sañjātidesaṭṭhena āyatanañ cā ti pi viññāṇañcâyatanaṃ. Pattamakkhana-telappabhutīhi ca upamāhi esa attho vibhāvetabbo. Sāmaṇero kira telena pattaṃ makkhetvā ṭhapesi. Taṃ yāgupānakāle thero “pattam āharā” ti āha. So “patte telam atthi, bhante” ti āha. Tato “āhara, sāmaṇera, telaṃ, nāḷiṃ pūressāmī” ti vutte “natthi, bhante, telan” ti āha. Tattha yathā anto vutthattā yāguyā saddhiṃ akappiyaṭṭhena “telam atthī” ti hoti, nāḷipūraṇâdīnaṃ vasena “natthī” ti hoti. Evaṃ sā pi saññā paṭusaññākiccaṃ kātuṃ asamatthatāya n’eva saññā, saṅkhārâvasesa-sukhumabhāvena vijjamānattā nâsaññā hoti.

Kiṃ pan’ettha saññākiccan ti? Ārammaṇa-sañjānanañ c’eva vipassanāya ca visayabhāvaṃ upagantvā nibbidājananaṃ. Dahanakiccam iva hi sukhodake tejodhātu, sañjānanakiccaṃ p’esā paṭuṃ kātuṃ na sakkoti, sesa-samāpattīsu saññā viya vipassanāya visayabhāvaṃ upagantvā nibbidājananam pi kātuṃ na sakkoti.

Aññesu hi khandhesu akatâbhiniveso bhikkhu nevasaññanâsaññâyatana-kkhandhe sammasitvā nibbidaṃ pattuṃ samattho nāma natthi, api ca āyasmā Sāriputto, pakativipassako pana mahāpañño Sāriputta-sadiso va sakkuṇeyya. So pi,
“Evaṃ kir’ime dhammā ahutvā sambhonti, hutvā paṭiventī” ti (ma. ni. 3.95)

Maggappaṭipannassa kira therassa purato gacchanto sāmaṇero thokaṃ udakaṃ disvā “udakaṃ, bhante, upāhanā omuñcathā” ti āha.
