Idāni dibbasotadhātuyā niddesakkamo anuppatto. Tattha tato parāsu ca tīsu abhiññāsu “so evaṃ samāhite citte” ti ādīnaṃ (dī. ni. 1.240 ādayo) attho vuttanayen’eva veditabbo. Sabbattha pana visesamattam eva vaṇṇayissāma.

Tatra1 dibbāya sotadhātuyā ti ettha dibbasadisattā dibbā. Devānaṃ hi sucaritakamma-nibbattā pitta-semha-ruhirâdīhi apalibuddhā upakkilesa-vimuttatāya dūre pi ārammaṇaṃ sampaṭicchana-samatthā dibba-pasāda-sotadhātu hoti. Ayañ câpi imassa bhikkhuno vīriya-bhāvanā-bala-nibbattā ñāṇa-sotadhātu tādisā yevā ti dibbasadisattā dibbā, api ca dibbavihāravasena paṭiladdhattā attanā ca dibbavihāra-sannissitattā pi dibbā, savanaṭṭhena nijjīvaṭṭhena ca sotadhātu, sotadhātu-kicca-karaṇena ca sotadhātu viyā ti pi sotadhātu, tāya dibbāya sotadhātuyā. Visuddhāyā ti parisuddhāya nirupakkilesāya. Atikkanta-mānusikāyā ti manussûpacāraṃ atikkamitvā saddasavanena mānusikaṃ maṃsa-sotadhātuṃ atikkantāya vītivattitvā ṭhitāya.

Ubho sadde suṇātī ti dve sadde suṇāti. Katame dve? Dibbe ca mānuse ca, devānañ ca manussānañ ca sadde ti vuttaṃ hoti. Etena padesa-pariyādānaṃ veditabbaṃ. Ye dūre santike cā ti ye saddā dūre paracakkavāḷe pi ye ca santike antamaso sadeha-sannissita-pāṇaka-saddā pi, te suṇātī ti vuttaṃ hoti. Etena nippadesa-pariyādānaṃ veditabbaṃ.

Kathaṃ panâyaṃ uppādetabbā ti? Tena bhikkhunā abhiññāpādakajjhānaṃ samāpajjitvā vuṭṭhāya parikamma-samādhicittena paṭhamataraṃ pakatisotapathe dūre oḷāriko2 araññe sīhâdīnaṃ saddo āvajjitabbo, vihāre ghaṇḍisaddo, bherisaddo, saṅkhasaddo, sāmaṇera-daharabhikkhūnaṃ sabbathāmena sajjhāyantānaṃ sajjhāyanasaddo, pakatikathaṃ kathentānaṃ “kiṃ bhante, kim āvuso” ti ādisaddo, sakuṇasaddo, vātasaddo, padasaddo, pakkuthita-udakassa cicciṭāyana-saddo, ātape sussamāna-tālapaṇṇa-saddo, kuntha-kipillikâdi-saddo ti evaṃ sabboḷārikato pabhuti yathākkamena sukhuma-saddā āvajjitabbā. Tena puratthimāya disāya saddānaṃ saddanimittaṃ manasikātabbaṃ, pacchimāya, uttarāya, dakkhiṇāya, heṭṭhimāya, uparimāya disāya, puratthimāya anudisāya, pacchimāya… uttarāya… dakkhiṇāya anudisāya saddānaṃ saddanimittaṃ manasikātabbaṃ, oḷārikānam pi sukhumānam pi saddānaṃ saddanimittaṃ manasikātabbaṃ.

Tassa te saddā pākatikacittassâpi pākaṭā honti, parikamma-samādhicittassa pana ativiya pākaṭā. Tass’evaṃ saddanimittaṃ manasikaroto “idāni dibbasotadhātu uppajjissatī” ti tesu saddesu aññataraṃ ārammaṇaṃ katvā manodvārâvajjanaṃ uppajjati, tasmiṃ niruddhe cattāri pañca vā javanāni javanti, yesaṃ purimāni tīṇi cattāri vā parikamma-upacārânuloma-gotrabhu-nāmakāni kāmāvacarāni, catutthaṃ pañcamaṃ vā appanācittaṃ rūpāvacaraṃ catutthajjhānikaṃ.

Tattha yaṃ tena appanācittena saddhiṃ uppannaṃ ñāṇaṃ, ayaṃ dibbasotadhātū ti veditabbā. Tato paraṃ tasmiṃ sote patito hoti. Taṃ thāmajātaṃ karontena “etth’antare saddaṃ suṇāmī” ti ekaṅgulamattaṃ paricchinditvā vaḍḍhetabbaṃ, tato dvaṅgula-caturaṅgula-aṭṭhaṅgula-vidatthi-ratana-antogabbha-pamukha-pāsāda-pariveṇa-saṅghārāma-gocaragāma-janapadâdivasena yāva cakkavāḷaṃ, tato vā bhiyyo pi paricchinditvā paricchinditvā vaḍḍhetabbaṃ.

Evaṃ adhigatâbhiñño esa pādakajjhānârammaṇena phuṭṭhokāsabbhantaragate pi sadde puna pādakajjhānaṃ asamāpajjitvā pi abhiññāñāṇena3 suṇāti yeva. Evaṃ suṇanto ca sace pi yāva Brahmalokā saṅkha-bheri-paṇavâdi-saddehi ekakolāhalaṃ hoti, pāṭiyekkaṃ vavatthapetukāmatāya sati “ayaṃ saṅkhasaddo ayaṃ bherisaddo” ti vavatthapetuṃ sakkoti yevā ti.

Cetopariyañāṇakathāya4 cetopariyañāṇāyā ti ettha pariyātī ti pariyaṃ, paricchindatī ti attho, cetaso pariyaṃ cetopariyaṃ, cetopariyañ ca taṃ ñāṇañ cā ti cetopariyañāṇaṃ, tadatthāyā ti vuttaṃ hoti. Parasattānan ti attānaṃ ṭhapetvā sesasattānaṃ. Parapuggalānan ti idam pi iminā ekattham eva, veneyyavasena pana desanāvilāsena ca byañjana-nānattaṃ kataṃ. Cetasā ceto ti attano cittena tesaṃ cittaṃ. Paricca pajānātī ti paricchinditvā sarāgâdivasena nānappakārato jānāti.

Kathaṃ pan’etaṃ ñāṇaṃ uppādetabban ti? Etañ hi dibbacakkhuvasena ijjhati, taṃ etassa parikammaṃ. Tasmā tena bhikkhunā ālokaṃ vaḍḍhetvā dibbena cakkhunā parassa hadayarūpaṃ nissāya vattamānassa lohitassa vaṇṇaṃ passitvā cittaṃ pariyesitabbaṃ. Yadā hi somanassacittaṃ vattati, tadā rattaṃ nigrodhapakka-sadisaṃ hoti, yadā domanassacittaṃ vattati, tadā kāḷakaṃ jambupakka-sadisaṃ, yadā upekkhācittaṃ vattati, tadā pasanna-tilatela-sadisaṃ. Tasmā tena “idaṃ rūpaṃ somanassindriya-samuṭṭhānaṃ, idaṃ domanassindriya-samuṭṭhānaṃ, idaṃ upekkhindriya-samuṭṭhānan” ti parassa hadayalohitavaṇṇaṃ passitvā cittaṃ pariyesantena cetopariyañāṇaṃ thāmagataṃ kātabbaṃ.

Evaṃ thāmagate hi tasmiṃ anukkamena sabbam pi kāmāvacara-cittaṃ rūpāvacarârūpāvacara-cittañ ca pajānāti, cittā cittam eva saṅkamanto vinā pi hadayarūpadassanena. Vuttam pi c’etaṃ Aṭṭhakathāyaṃ:
“Āruppe parassa cittaṃ jānitukāmo kassa hadayarūpaṃ passati, kass’indriyavikāraṃ oloketī ti? Na kassaci. Iddhimato visayo esa, yad idaṃ yattha katthaci cittaṃ āvajjanto soḷasappabhedaṃ cittaṃ jānāti. Akatâbhinivesassa pana vasena ayaṃ kathā” ti.

Sarāgaṃ vā cittan ti ādīsu pana aṭṭhavidhaṃ lobhasahagataṃ cittaṃ sarāgaṃ cittan ti veditabbaṃ. Avasesaṃ catubhūmakaṃ kusalâbyākataṃ cittaṃ vītarāgaṃ. Dve domanassacittāni dve vicikicchuddhacca-cittānī ti imāni pana cattāri cittāni imasmiṃ duke saṅgahaṃ na gacchanti. Keci pana therā tāni pi saṅgaṇhanti. Duvidhaṃ pana domanassacittaṃ sadosaṃ cittaṃ nāma. Sabbam pi catubhūmakaṃ kusalâbyākataṃ vītadosaṃ. Sesāni dasâkusalacittāni imasmiṃ duke saṅgahaṃ na gacchanti. Keci pana therā tāni pi saṅgaṇhanti. Samohaṃ vītamohan ti ettha pana pāṭipuggalika-nayena vicikicchuddhacca-sahagata-dvayam eva samohaṃ, mohassa pana sabbâkusalesu sambhavato dvādasavidham pi akusalacittaṃ samohaṃ cittan ti veditabbaṃ, avasesaṃ vītamohaṃ.

Thinamiddhânugataṃ pana saṃkhittaṃ, uddhaccânugataṃ vikkhittaṃ. Rūpāvacarârūpāvacaraṃ mahaggataṃ, avasesaṃ amahaggataṃ. Sabbam pi tebhūmakaṃ sa-uttaraṃ, lokuttaraṃ anuttaraṃ. Upacārappattaṃ appanāppattañ ca samāhitaṃ, ubhayam appattaṃ asamāhitaṃ. Tadaṅga-vikkhambhana-samuccheda-paṭipassaddhi-nissaraṇa-vimutti-ppattaṃ vimuttaṃ, pañcavidham pi etaṃ vimuttim appattaṃ avimuttan ti veditabbaṃ. Iti cetopariyañāṇalābhī bhikkhu sabbappakāram pi idaṃ sarāgaṃ vā cittaṃ…pe… avimuttaṃ vā cittaṃ avimuttaṃ cittan ti pajānātī ti.

Pubbenivāsānussatiñāṇakathā

Pubbenivāsânussatiñāṇakathāyaṃ5 pubbenivāsânussatiñāṇāyā ti (dī. ni. 1.244) pubbenivāsânussatimhi yaṃ ñāṇaṃ, tadatthāya. Pubbenivāso ti pubbe atītajātīsu nivutthakkhandhā. Nivutthā ti ajjhāvutthā, anubhūtā, attano santāne uppajjitvā niruddhā, nivutthadhammā vā. Nivutthā ti gocaranivāsena nivutthā, attano viññāṇena viññātā paricchinnā, paraviññāṇaviññātā pi vā chinna-vaṭumakânussaraṇâdīsu, te Buddhānaṃ yeva labbhanti. Pubbenivāsânussatī ti yāya satiyā pubbe nivāsaṃ anussarati, sā pubbenivāsânussati. Ñāṇan ti tāya satiyā sampayuttañāṇaṃ. Evam imassa pubbenivāsânussatiñāṇassa atthāya pubbenivāsânussatiñāṇāya, etassa ñāṇassa adhigamāya pattiyā ti vuttaṃ hoti.

Anekavihitan ti anekavidhaṃ, anekehi vā pakārehi pavattitaṃ, saṃvaṇṇitan ti attho. Pubbenivāsan ti samanantarâtīta-bhavaṃ ādiṃ katvā tattha tattha nivuttha-santānaṃ. Anussaratī ti khandha-paṭipāṭivasena cuti-paṭisandhivasena vā anugantvā anugantvā sarati.

Imañ hi pubbe nivāsaṃ cha janā anussaranti: titthiyā, pakatisāvakā, mahāsāvakā, aggasāvakā, paccekabuddhā, Buddhā ti.

Tattha titthiyā cattālīsaṃ yeva kappe anussaranti, na tato paraṃ. Kasmā? Dubbalapaññattā. Tesañ hi nāmarūpapariccheda-virahitattā dubbalā paññā hoti. Pakatisāvakā kappasatam pi kappasahassam pi anussaranti yeva, balavapaññattā. Asīti mahāsāvakā satasahassakappe anussaranti, dve aggasāvakā ekaṃ asaṅkhyeyyaṃ satasahassañ ca, paccekabuddhā dve asaṅkhyeyyāni satasahassañ ca, — ettako hi etesaṃ abhinīhāro, — Buddhānaṃ pana paricchedo nāma natthi.

Titthiyā ca khandha-paṭipāṭim eva saranti, paṭipāṭiṃ muñcitvā cuti-paṭisandhivasena sarituṃ na sakkonti. Tesañ hi andhānaṃ viya icchita-padesokkamanaṃ natthi, yathā pana andhā yaṭṭhiṃ amuñcitvā va gacchanti, evaṃ te khandhānaṃ paṭipāṭiṃ amuñcitvā va saranti. Pakatisāvakā khandha-paṭipāṭiyā pi anussaranti cuti-paṭisandhivasena pi saṅkamanti. Tathā asīti mahāsāvakā. Dvinnaṃ pana aggasāvakānaṃ khandha-paṭipāṭi-kiccaṃ natthi, ekassa attabhāvassa cutiṃ disvā paṭisandhiṃ passanti, puna aparassa cutiṃ disvā paṭisandhin ti evaṃ cuti-paṭisandhivasen’eva saṅkamantā gacchanti. Tathā paccekabuddhā.

Buddhānaṃ pana n’eva khandha-paṭipāṭikiccaṃ, na cuti-paṭisandhivasena saṅkamanakiccaṃ atthi. Tesañ hi anekāsu kappakoṭīsu heṭṭhā vā upari vā yaṃ yaṃ ṭhānaṃ icchanti, taṃ taṃ pākaṭam eva hoti, tasmā anekā pi kappakoṭiyo peyyālapāḷiṃ viya saṃkhipitvā yaṃ yaṃ icchanti, tatra tatr’eva okkamantā sīhokkanta-vasena6 gacchanti. Evaṃ gacchantānañ ca nesaṃ ñāṇaṃ, yathā nāma kata-vāla-vedha-paricayassa Sarabhaṅga-sadisassa dhanuggahassa khitto saro antarā rukkha-latâdīsu asajjamāno lakkhe yeva patati, na sajjati na virajjhati, evaṃ antarantarāsu jātīsu na sajjati na virajjhati, asajjamānaṃ avirajjhamānaṃ icchiticchitaṭṭhānaṃ yeva gaṇhāti.

Imesu ca pana pubbenivāsaṃ anussaraṇasattesu titthiyānaṃ pubbenivāsa-dassanaṃ khajjupanaka-pabhā-sadisaṃ hutvā upaṭṭhāti. Pakatisāvakānaṃ dīpappabhā-sadisaṃ. Mahāsāvakānaṃ ukkāpabhā-sadisaṃ. Aggasāvakānaṃ osadhi-tārakappabhā-sadisaṃ. Paccekabuddhānaṃ candappabhā-sadisaṃ. Buddhānaṃ rasmisahassa-paṭimaṇḍita-sarada-sūriyamaṇḍala-sadisaṃ hutvā upaṭṭhāti.

Titthiyānañ ca pubbenivāsânussaraṇaṃ andhānaṃ yaṭṭhikoṭi-gamanaṃ viya hoti. Pakatisāvakānaṃ daṇḍakasetu-gamanaṃ viya. Mahāsāvakānaṃ jaṅghasetu-gamanaṃ viya. Aggasāvakānaṃ sakaṭasetu-gamanaṃ viya. Paccekabuddhānaṃ mahājaṅghamagga-gamanaṃ viya. Buddhānaṃ mahāsakaṭamagga-gamanaṃ viya.

Imasmiṃ pana adhikāre sāvakānaṃ pubbenivāsânussaraṇaṃ adhippetaṃ. Tena vuttaṃ:
“Anussaratī ti khandha-paṭipāṭivasena cuti-paṭisandhivasena vā anugantvā anugantvā saratī” ti. (XIII.14)

Tasmā evam anussaritukāmena ādikammikena bhikkhunā pacchābhattaṃ piṇḍapāta-paṭikkantena rahogatena paṭisallinena paṭipāṭiyā cattāri jhānāni samāpajjitvā abhiññā-pādaka-catutthajjhānato vuṭṭhāya sabbapacchimā nisajjā āvajjitabbā, tato āsana-paññāpanaṃ, senāsana-ppavesanaṃ, pattacīvara-paṭisāmanaṃ, bhojanakālo, gāmato āgamanakālo, gāme piṇḍāya caritakālo, gāmaṃ piṇḍāya paviṭṭhakālo, vihārato nikkhamanakālo, cetiyaṅgaṇa-bodhiyaṅgaṇa-vandanakālo, pattadhovanakālo, pattapaṭiggahaṇakālo, pattapaṭiggahaṇato yāva mukhadhovanā katakiccaṃ, paccūsakāle katakiccaṃ, majjhimayāme7 katakiccaṃ, paṭhamayāme katakiccan ti evaṃ paṭilomakkamena sakalaṃ rattindivaṃ katakiccaṃ āvajjitabbaṃ.

Ettakaṃ pana pakaticittassa pi pākaṭaṃ hoti, parikamma-samādhicittassa pana atipākaṭam eva. Sace pan’ettha kiñci na pākaṭaṃ hoti, puna pādakajjhānaṃ samāpajjitvā vuṭṭhāya āvajjitabbaṃ. Ettakena dīpe jalite viya pākaṭaṃ hoti. Evaṃ paṭilomakkamen’eva dutiyadivase pi tatiya-catuttha-pañcama-divase pi dasâhe pi aḍḍhamāse pi māse pi yāva saṃvaccharā pi katakiccaṃ āvajjitabbaṃ.

Eten’eva upāyena dasa vassāni vīsati vassānī ti yāva imasmiṃ bhave attano paṭisandhi, tāva āvajjantena purimabhave cutikkhaṇe pavattita-nāmarūpaṃ āvajjitabbaṃ. Pahoti hi paṇḍito bhikkhu paṭhamavāren’eva paṭisandhiṃ ugghāṭetvā cutikkhaṇe nāmarūpam ārammaṇaṃ kātuṃ.

Yasmā pana purimabhave nāmarūpaṃ asesaṃ niruddhaṃ aññaṃ uppannaṃ, tasmā taṃ ṭhānaṃ āhundarikaṃ andhatamam iva hoti, duddasaṃ duppaññena. Tenâpi “na sakkom’ahaṃ paṭisandhiṃ ugghāṭetvā cutikkhaṇe pavattita-nāmarūpam ārammaṇaṃ kātun” ti dhuranikkhepo na kātabbo. Tad eva pana pādakajjhānaṃ punappunaṃ samāpajjitabbaṃ, tato ca vuṭṭhāya vuṭṭhāya taṃ ṭhānaṃ āvajjitabbaṃ.

Evaṃ karonto hi seyyathā pi nāma balavā puriso kūṭâgāra-kaṇṇikatthāya mahārukkhaṃ chindanto, sākhā-palāsa-cchedana-matten’eva pharasu-dhārāya vipannāya mahārukkhaṃ chindituṃ asakkonto pi dhuranikkhepaṃ akatvā va kammārasālaṃ gantvā tikhiṇaṃ pharasuṃ kārāpetvā puna āgantvā chindeyya, puna vipannāya ca puna pi tath’eva kāretvā chindeyya, so evaṃ chindanto chinnassa chinnassa puna chetabbâbhāvato acchinnassa ca chedanato na cirass’eva mahārukkhaṃ pāteyya, evam evaṃ pādakajjhānā vuṭṭhāya pubbe āvajjitaṃ anāvajjitvā paṭisandhim eva āvajjanto na cirass’eva paṭisandhiṃ ugghāṭetvā cutikkhaṇe pavattita-nāmarūpaṃ ārammaṇaṃ kareyyā ti. Kaṭṭhaphālaka-kesohārakâdīhi pi ayam attho dīpetabbo.

Tattha pacchima-nisajjato pabhuti yāva paṭisandhito ārammaṇaṃ katvā pavattaṃ ñāṇaṃ pubbenivāsañāṇaṃ nāma na hoti, taṃ pana parikamma-samādhi-ñāṇaṃ nāma hoti, atītaṃsañāṇan ti pi eke vadanti, taṃ rūpāvacaraṃ sandhāya na yujjati. Yadā pan’assa bhikkhuno paṭisandhiṃ atikkamma cutikkhaṇe pavattita-nāmarūpaṃ ārammaṇaṃ katvā manodvārâvajjanaṃ uppajjati, tasmiñ ca niruddhe tad ev’ārammaṇaṃ katvā cattāri pañca vā javanāni javanti, sesaṃ8 pubbe vuttanayen’eva purimāni parikammâdi-nāmakāni kāmāvacarāni honti, pacchimaṃ rūpāvacaraṃ catutthajjhānikaṃ appanācittaṃ, tadā’ssa yaṃ tena cittena saha ñāṇaṃ uppajjati, idaṃ pubbenivāsânussatiñāṇaṃ nāma. Tena ñāṇena sampayuttāya satiyā,
“Anekavihitaṃ pubbe nivāsaṃ anussarati, seyyathidaṃ, ekam pi jātiṃ dve pi jātiyo…pe… iti sâkāraṃ sa-uddesaṃ anekavihitaṃ pubbe nivāsaṃ anussaratī” ti. (dī. ni. 1.244)

Tattha ekam pi jātin ti ekam pi paṭisandhimūlaṃ cutipariyosānaṃ ekabhava-pariyāpannaṃ khandha-santānaṃ. Esa nayo dve pi jātiyo ti ādīsu pi. Aneke pi saṃvaṭṭakappe ti ādīsu pana parihāyamāno kappo saṃvaṭṭakappo, vaḍḍhamāno vivaṭṭakappo ti veditabbo.

Tattha saṃvaṭṭena saṃvaṭṭaṭṭhāyī gahito hoti, taṃmūlakattā, vivaṭṭena ca vivaṭṭaṭṭhāyī. Evañ hi sati yāni tāni,
“Cattār’imāni, bhikkhave, kappassa asaṅkhyeyyāni. Katamāni cattāri? Saṃvaṭṭo, saṃvaṭṭaṭṭhāyī, vivaṭṭo, vivaṭṭaṭṭhāyī” ti (a. ni. 4.156 thokaṃ visadisaṃ)
vuttāni, tāni pariggahitāni honti.

Tattha tayo saṃvaṭṭā: āposaṃvaṭṭo, tejosaṃvaṭṭo, vāyosaṃvaṭṭo ti. Tisso saṃvaṭṭasīmā: Ābhassarā, Subhakiṇhā, Vehapphalā ti. Yadā kappo tejena saṃvaṭṭati, Ābhassarato heṭṭhā agginā ḍayhati. Yadā āpena saṃvaṭṭati, Subhakiṇhato heṭṭhā udakena vilīyati. Yadā vāyunā saṃvaṭṭati, Vehapphalato heṭṭhā vātena viddhaṃsati. Vitthārato pana sadā pi ekaṃ buddhakhettaṃ vinassati.

Buddhakhettaṃ nāma tividhaṃ hoti: jātikhettaṃ, āṇākhettaṃ, visayakhettañ ca. Tattha jātikhettaṃ dasasahassa-cakkavāḷa-pariyantaṃ hoti, yaṃ Tathāgatassa paṭisandhi-gahaṇâdīsu kampati. Āṇākhettaṃ koṭisatasahassa-cakkavāḷa-pariyantaṃ, yattha

imesaṃ parittānaṃ ānubhāvo vattati. Visayakhettaṃ anantam aparimāṇaṃ, yaṃ
“Yāvatā vā pana ākaṅkheyyā” ti (a. ni. 3.81)
vuttaṃ, yattha yaṃ yaṃ Tathāgato ākaṅkhati, taṃ taṃ jānāti. Evam etesu tīsu buddhakhettesu ekaṃ āṇākhettaṃ vinassati. Tasmiṃ pana vinassante jātikhettam pi vinaṭṭham eva hoti. Vinassantañ ca ekato va vinassati, saṇṭhahantam pi ekato saṇṭhahati.

Yasmiṃ hi samaye kappo agginā nassati, ādito va kappavināsaka-mahāmegho vuṭṭhahitvā koṭisatasahassa-cakkavāḷe ekaṃ mahāvassaṃ vassati, manussā tuṭṭhahaṭṭhā sabbabījāni nīharitvā vapanti, sassesu pana go-khāyitaka-mattesu jātesu gadrabha-ravaṃ ravanto ekabindum pi na vassati, tadā pacchinnaṃ pacchinnam eva vassaṃ hoti. Idaṃ sandhāya hi Bhagavatā:
“Hoti kho so, bhikkhave, samayo yaṃ bahūni vassāni bahūni vassasatāni bahūni vassasahassāni bahūni vassasatasahassāni devo na vassatī” ti (a. ni. 7.66)
vuttaṃ. Vassûpajīvino sattā kālaṅkatvā Brahmaloke nibbattanti, puppha-phalûpajīviniyo ca devatā.

Evaṃ dīghe addhāne vītivatte tattha tattha udakaṃ parikkhayaṃ gacchati. Athânupubbena maccha-kacchapā pi kālaṅkatvā Brahmaloke nibbattanti, nerayikasattā pi. Tattha nerayikā sattama-sūriya-pātubhāve vinassantī ti eke. Jhānaṃ vinā natthi Brahmaloke nibbatti, etesañ ca keci dubbhikkha-pīḷitā keci abhabbā jhānâdhigamāya, te kathaṃ tattha nibbattantī ti? Devaloke paṭiladdha-jjhānavasena.

Tadā hi “vassa-satasahassass’accayena kappuṭṭhānaṃ bhavissatī” ti Lokabyūhā nāma kāmāvacaradevā muttasirā vikiṇṇakesā rudamukhā assūni hatthehi puñchamānā rattavattha-nivatthā ativiya virūpavesa-dhārino hutvā manussapathe vicarantā evaṃ ārocenti “mārisā, ito vassa-satasahassass’accayena kappavuṭṭhānaṃ bhavissati, ayaṃ loko vinassissati, mahāsamuddo pi ussussissati, ayañ ca mahāpathavī Sineru ca pabbatarājā uddayhissanti vinassissanti, yāva Brahmalokā lokavināso bhavissati, mettaṃ, mārisā, bhāvetha, karuṇaṃ muditaṃ upekkhaṃ, mārisā, bhāvetha, mātaraṃ upaṭṭhahatha, pitaraṃ upaṭṭhahatha, kule jeṭṭhâpacāyino hothā” ti.

Tesaṃ vacanaṃ sutvā yebhuyyena manussā ca bhummadevatā ca saṃvegajātā aññamaññaṃ muducittā hutvā mettâdīni puññāni karitvā devaloke nibbattanti. Tattha dibbasudhābhojanaṃ bhuñjitvā vāyokasiṇe parikammaṃ katvā jhānaṃ paṭilabhanti. Tadaññe pana aparâpariya-vedanīyena kammena devaloke nibbattanti. Aparâpariya-vedanīya-kamma-rahito hi saṃsāre saṃsaramāno9 satto nāma natthi. Te pi tattha tath’eva jhānaṃ paṭilabhanti. Evaṃ devaloke paṭiladdha-jjhānavasena sabbe pi Brahmaloke nibbattantī ti.

Vassûpacchedato pana uddhaṃ dīghassa addhuno accayena dutiyo sūriyo pātubhavati. Vuttam pi c’etaṃ Bhagavatā:
“Hoti kho so, bhikkhave, samayo” ti (a. ni. 7.66)
Sattasūriyaṃ vitthāretabbaṃ. Pātubhūte ca pana tasmiṃ n’eva rattiparicchedo, na divāparicchedo paññāyati, eko sūriyo uṭṭheti, eko atthaṃ gacchati, avicchinna-sūriya-santāpo va loko hoti. Yathā ca pakatisūriye Sūriyadevaputto hoti, evaṃ kappavināsaka-sūriye natthi. Tattha pakatisūriye vattamāne ākāse valāhakā pi dhūmasikhā pi caranti, kappavināsaka-sūriye vattamāne vigata-dhūma-valāhakaṃ ādāsa-maṇḍalaṃ viya nimmalaṃ nabhaṃ hoti. Ṭhapetvā pañca mahānadiyo sesakunnadī-ādīsu udakaṃ sussati.

Tato pi dīghassa addhuno accayena tatiyo sūriyo pātubhavati, yassa pātubhāvā mahānadiyo pi sussanti.

Tato pi dīghassa addhuno accayena catuttho sūriyo pātubhavati, yassa pātubhāvā Himavati mahānadīnaṃ pabhavā “Sīhapapāto Haṃsapātano Kaṇṇamuṇḍako Rathakāradaho Anotattadaho Chaddantadaho Kuṇāladaho” ti ime satta mahāsarā sussanti.

Tato pi dīghassa addhuno accayena pañcamo sūriyo pātubhavati, yassa pātubhāvā anupubbena mahāsamudde aṅgulipabba-temana-mattam pi udakaṃ na saṇṭhāti.

Tato pi dīghassa addhuno accayena chaṭṭho sūriyo pātubhavati, yassa pātubhāvā sakala-cakkavāḷaṃ ekadhūmaṃ hoti, pariyādiṇṇa-sinehaṃ dhūmena. Yathā c’idaṃ, evaṃ koṭisatasahassa-cakkavāḷāni pi.

Tato pi dīghassa addhuno accayena sattamo sūriyo pātubhavati, yassa pātubhāvā sakala-cakkavāḷaṃ ekajālaṃ hoti saddhiṃ koṭisatasahassa-cakkavāḷehi, yojana-satikâdi-bhedāni Sinerukūṭāni pi palujjitvā ākāse yeva antaradhāyanti. Sā aggijālā uṭṭhahitvā Cātumahārājike gaṇhāti. Tattha kanakavimāna-ratanavimāna-maṇivimānāni jhāpetvā Tāvatiṃsabhavanaṃ gaṇhāti. Eten’eva upāyena yāva paṭhamajjhāna-bhūmiṃ gaṇhāti. Tattha tayo pi Brahmaloke jhāpetvā Ābhassare āhacca tiṭṭhati. Sā yāva aṇumattam pi saṅkhāragataṃ atthi, tāva na nibbāyati. Sabba-saṅkhāra-parikkhayā pana sappitela-jhāpanaggisikhā viya chārikam pi anavasesetvā nibbāyati. Heṭṭhā-ākāsena saha upari-ākāso eko hoti mahandhakāro.

Atha dīghassa addhuno accayena mahāmegho uṭṭhahitvā paṭhamaṃ sukhumaṃ sukhumaṃ vassati, anupubbena kumudanāḷa-yaṭṭhi-musala-tālakkhandhâdi-ppamāṇāhi dhārāhi vassanto koṭisatasahassa-cakkavāḷesu sabbaṃ daḍḍhaṭṭhānaṃ pūretvā antaradhāyati. Taṃ udakaṃ heṭṭhā ca tiriyañ ca vāto samuṭṭhahitvā ghanaṃ karoti parivaṭumaṃ padumini-patte udakabindu-sadisaṃ. Kathaṃ tāva mahantaṃ udakarāsiṃ ghanaṃ karotī ti ce? Vivarasampadānato. Tañ hi’ssa tamhi tamhi vivaraṃ deti.

Taṃ evaṃ vātena sampiṇḍiyamānaṃ ghanaṃ kariyamānaṃ parikkhayamānaṃ anupubbena heṭṭhā otarati. Otiṇṇe otiṇṇe udake Brahmalokaṭṭhāne Brahmalokā, upari catukāmāvacara-devalokaṭṭhāne ca devalokā pātubhavanti. Purima-pathaviṭṭhānaṃ otiṇṇe pana balavavātā uppajjanti. Te taṃ pihitadvāre dhamakaraṇe ṭhita-udakam iva nirassāsaṃ10 katvā rundhanti11. Madhurodakaṃ parikkhayaṃ gacchamānaṃ upari rasapathaviṃ samuṭṭhāpeti, sā vaṇṇa-sampannā c’eva hoti gandharasa-sampannā ca nirudaka-pāyāsassa upari paṭalaṃ viya.

Tadā ca Ābhassarabrahmaloke paṭhamatarâbhinibbattā sattā āyukkhayā vā puññakkhayā vā tato cavitvā idhûpapajjanti. Te honti sayaṃpabhā antalikkhacarā. Te Aggaññasutte (dī. ni. 3.119) vuttanayena taṃ rasapathaviṃ sāyitvā taṇhâbhibhūtā āluppakārakaṃ paribhuñjituṃ upakkamanti. Atha nesaṃ sayaṃpabhā antaradhāyati, andhakāro hoti. Te andhakāraṃ disvā bhāyanti.

Tato nesaṃ bhayaṃ nāsetvā sūrabhāvaṃ janayantaṃ paripuṇṇa-paṇṇāsa-yojanaṃ sūriya-maṇḍalaṃ pātubhavati. Te taṃ disvā “ālokaṃ paṭilabhimhā” ti haṭṭhatuṭṭhā hutvā “amhākaṃ bhītānaṃ bhayaṃ nāsetvā sūrabhāvaṃ janayanto uṭṭhito, tasmā ‘sūriyo hotū’” ti sūriyo tv ev’assa nāmaṃ karonti. Atha sūriye divasaṃ ālokaṃ katvā atthaṅgate “yam pi ālokaṃ labhimhā, so pi no naṭṭho” ti puna bhītā honti. Tesaṃ evaṃ hoti “sādhu vat’assa sace aññaṃ ālokaṃ labheyyāmā” ti.

Tesaṃ cittaṃ ñatvā viya ekūna-paṇṇāsa-yojanaṃ candamaṇḍalaṃ pātubhavati. Te taṃ disvā bhiyyoso mattāya haṭṭhatuṭṭhā hutvā “amhākaṃ chandaṃ ñatvā viya uṭṭhito, tasmā ‘cando hotū’” ti cando tv ev’assa nāmaṃ karonti.

Evaṃ candima-sūriyesu pātubhūtesu nakkhattāni tārakarūpāni pātubhavanti. Tato pabhuti rattindivā paññāyanti, anukkamena ca māsaddhamāsa-utu-saṃvaccharā.

Candimasūriyānaṃ pana pātubhūtadivase yeva Sineru-Cakkavāḷa-Himavanta-pabbatā pātubhavanti. Te ca kho apubbaṃ acarimaṃ Phagguṇa-puṇṇama-divase yeva pātubhavanti. Kathaṃ? Yathā nāma kaṅgubhatte paccamāne ekappahāren’eva pupphuḷakāni uṭṭhahanti, eke padesā thūpathūpā honti, eke ninnaninnā, eke samasamā, evam evaṃ thūpathūpa-ṭṭhāne pabbatā honti, ninnaninna-ṭṭhāne samuddā, samasama-ṭṭhāne dīpā ti.

Atha tesaṃ sattānaṃ rasapathaviṃ paribhuñjantānaṃ kamena ekacce vaṇṇavanto, ekacce dubbaṇṇā honti, tattha vaṇṇavanto dubbaṇṇe atimaññanti. Tesaṃ atimāna-paccayā sā pi rasapathavī antaradhāyati, bhūmipappaṭako pātubhavati. Atha nesaṃ ten’eva nayena so pi antaradhāyati, padālatā12 pātubhavati. Ten’eva nayena sā pi antaradhāyati, akaṭṭhapāko sāli pātubhavati, akaṇo athuso suddho sugandho taṇḍulapphalo.

Tato nesaṃ bhājanāni uppajjanti. Te sāliṃ bhājane ṭhapetvā pāsāṇapiṭṭhiyā ṭhapenti, sayam eva jālasikhā uṭṭhahitvā taṃ pacati. So hoti odano sumana-jātipuppha-sadiso, na tassa sūpena vā byañjanena vā karaṇīyaṃ atthi, yaṃ yaṃ rasaṃ bhuñjitukāmā honti, taṃ taṃ raso va hoti.

Tesaṃ taṃ oḷārikaṃ āhāraṃ āharayataṃ tato pabhuti muttakarīsaṃ sañjāyati. Atha nesaṃ tassa nikkhamanatthāya vaṇamukhāni pabhijjanti, purisassa purisabhāvo, itthiyā pi itthibhāvo pātubhavati. Tatra sudaṃ itthī purisaṃ, puriso ca itthiṃ ativelaṃ upanijjhāyati. Tesaṃ ativelaṃ upanijjhāyana-paccayā kāmapariḷāho uppajjati. Tato methunadhammaṃ paṭisevanti.

Te asaddhamma-paṭisevana-paccayā viññūhi garahiyamānā viheṭhiyamānā tassa asaddhammassa paṭicchādanahetu agārāni karonti. Te agāraṃ ajjhāvasamānā anukkamena aññatarassa alasajātikassa sattassa diṭṭhânugatiṃ āpajjantā sannidhiṃ karonti. Tato pabhuti kaṇo pi thuso pi taṇḍulaṃ pariyonandhati, lāyitaṭṭhānam pi na paṭivirūhati. Te sannipatitvā anutthunanti:
“Pāpakā vata bho dhammā sattesu pātubhūtā, mayaṃ hi pubbe manomayā ahumhā” ti
Aggaññasutte (dī. ni. 3.128) vuttanayena vitthāretabbaṃ.

Tato mariyādaṃ ṭhapenti. Atha aññataro satto aññassa bhāgaṃ adinnaṃ ādiyati. Taṃ dvikkhattuṃ paribhāsetvā tatiyavāre pāṇi-leṭṭu-daṇḍehi paharanti. Te evaṃ adinnâdāna-garaha-musāvāda-daṇḍâdānesu uppannesu sannipatitvā cintayanti:
“Yaṃ nūna mayaṃ ekaṃ sattaṃ sammanneyyāma, yo no sammā khīyitabbaṃ khīyeyya, garahitabbaṃ garaheyya, pabbājetabbaṃ pabbājeyya, mayaṃ pan’assa sālīnaṃ bhāgaṃ anuppadassāmā” ti.

Evaṃ katasanniṭṭhānesu pana sattesu imasmiṃ tāva kappe ayam eva Bhagavā bodhisattabhūto tena samayena tesu sattesu abhirūpataro ca dassanīyataro ca mahesakkhataro ca buddhisampanno paṭibalo niggaha-paggahaṃ kātuṃ. Te taṃ upasaṅkamitvā yācitvā sammanniṃsu. So tena mahājanena sammato ti Mahāsammato, khettānaṃ adhipatī ti Khattiyo, dhammena samena pare rañjetī ti Rājā ti tīhi nāmehi paññāyittha. Yañ hi loke acchariyaṭṭhānaṃ, bodhisatto va tattha ādipuriso ti. Evaṃ bodhisattaṃ ādiṃ katvā khattiyamaṇḍale saṇṭhite, anupubbena brāhmaṇâdayo pi vaṇṇā saṇṭhahiṃsu.

Tattha kappavināsaka-mahāmeghato yāva jālupacchedo, idam ekaṃ asaṅkhyeyyaṃ saṃvaṭṭo ti vuccati. Kappavināsaka-jālupacchedato yāva koṭisatasahassa-cakkavāḷa-paripūrako sampatti-mahāmegho, idaṃ dutiyaṃ asaṅkhyeyyaṃ saṃvaṭṭaṭṭhāyī ti vuccati. Sampatti-mahāmeghato yāva candimasūriya-pātubhāvo, idaṃ tatiyaṃ asaṅkhyeyyaṃ vivaṭṭo ti vuccati. Candimasūriya-pātubhāvato yāva puna kappavināsaka-mahāmegho, idaṃ catutthaṃ asaṅkhyeyyaṃ vivaṭṭaṭṭhāyī ti vuccati. Imāni cattāri asaṅkhyeyyāni eko mahākappo hoti. Evaṃ tāva agginā vināso ca saṇṭhahanañ ca veditabbaṃ.

So ādito sukhumaṃ sukhumaṃ vassanto anukkamena mahādhārāhi koṭisatasahassa-cakkavāḷānaṃ pūrento vassati. Khārudakena phuṭṭhaphuṭṭhā pathavī-pabbatâdayo vilīyanti. Udakaṃ samantato vātehi dhāriyati. Pathavito yāva dutiyajjhānabhūmiṃ udakaṃ gaṇhāti. Tattha tayo pi Brahmaloke vilīyāpetvā Subhakiṇhe āhacca tiṭṭhati. Taṃ yāva aṇumattam pi saṅkhāragataṃ atthi, tāva na vūpasammati, udakânugataṃ pana sabbasaṅkhāragataṃ abhibhavitvā sahasā vūpasammati, antaradhānaṃ gacchati. Heṭṭhā-ākāsena saha upari-ākāso eko hoti mahandhakāro ti (XIII.41) sabbaṃ vuttasadisaṃ. Kevalaṃ pan’idha Ābhassara-brahmalokaṃ ādiṃ katvā loko pātubhavati, Subhakiṇhato ca cavitvā Ābhassaraṭṭhānâdīsu sattā nibbattanti.

Athânukkamena heṭṭhā mahāpathaviyā vāto samuṭṭhahitvā pathaviṃ parivattetvā uddhaṃmūlaṃ katvā ākāse khipati. Yojana-satappamāṇā pi pathavippadesā, dviyojana-tiyojana-catuyojana-pañcayojana-satappamāṇā pi bhijjitvā vātavegena khittā ākāse yeva cuṇṇavicuṇṇā hutvā abhāvaṃ gacchanti. Cakkavāḷapabbatam pi Sinerupabbatam pi vāto ukkhipitvā ākāse khipati. Te aññamaññaṃ abhihantvā cuṇṇavicuṇṇā hutvā vinassanti. Eten’eva upāyena bhummaṭṭhaka-vimānāni ca ākāsaṭṭhaka-vimānāni ca vināsento cha kāmāvacaradevaloke vināsetvā koṭisatasahassa-cakkavāḷāni vināseti. Tattha Cakkavāḷā Cakkavāḷehi Himavantā Himavantehi Sinerū Sinerūhi aññamaññaṃ samāgantvā cuṇṇavicuṇṇā hutvā vinassanti.

Pathavito yāva tatiyajjhānabhūmiṃ vāto gaṇhāti. Tattha tayo pi Brahmaloke vināsetvā Vehapphalaṃ āhacca tiṭṭhati. Evaṃ sabbasaṅkhāragataṃ vināsetvā sayam pi vinassati. Heṭṭhā-ākāsena saha upari-ākāso eko hoti mahandhakāro ti (XIII.41) sabbaṃ vuttasadisaṃ. Idha pana Subhakiṇha-brahmalokaṃ ādiṃ katvā loko pātubhavati, Vehapphalato ca cavitvā Subhakiṇhaṭṭhānâdīsu sattā nibbattanti.

Kiṃkāraṇā evaṃ loko vinassati? Akusalamūlakāraṇā. Akusalamūlesu hi ussannesu evaṃ loko vinassati. So ca kho rāge ussannatare agginā vinassati, dose ussannatare udakena vinassati, — keci pana dose ussannatare agginā, rāge ussannatare udakenā ti vadanti, — mohe ussannatare vātena vinassati.

Evaṃ vinassanto pi ca nirantaram eva satta vāre agginā vinassati, aṭṭhame vāre udakena, puna satta vāre agginā, aṭṭhame vāre udakenā ti evaṃ aṭṭhame aṭṭhame vāre vinassanto sattakkhattuṃ udakena vinassitvā puna satta vāre agginā nassati. Ettāvatā tesaṭṭhi kappā atītā honti. Etth’antare udakena nassanavāraṃ sampattam pi paṭibāhitvā laddhokāso vāto paripuṇṇa-catusaṭṭhi-kappâyuke Subhakiṇhe viddhaṃsento lokaṃ vināseti.

Pubbenivāsaṃ anussaranto pi ca kappânussaraṇako bhikkhu etesu kappesu aneke pi saṃvaṭṭakappe aneke pi vivaṭṭakappe aneke pi saṃvaṭṭa-vivaṭṭa-kappe anussarati. Kathaṃ? “Amutr’āsin” ti ādinā (dī. ni. 1.244) nayena. Tattha amutr’āsin ti amumhi saṃvaṭṭakappe ahaṃ amumhi bhave vā yoniyā vā gatiyā vā viññāṇaṭṭhitiyā vā sattâvāse vā sattanikāye vā āsiṃ.

Evaṃnāmo ti Tisso vā Phusso vā. Evaṃgotto ti Kaccāno vā Kassapo vā. Idam assa atītabhave attano nāmagottânussaraṇavasena vuttaṃ. Sace pana tasmiṃ kāle attano vaṇṇasampattiṃ vā lūkha-paṇīta-jīvika-bhāvaṃ13 vā sukha-dukkha-bahulataṃ vā appâyuka-dīghâyuka-bhāvaṃ vā anussaritukāmo hoti, tam pi anussarati yeva. Ten’āha: “evaṃvaṇṇo…pe… evamāyupariyanto” ti.

Tattha evaṃvaṇṇo ti odāto vā sāmo vā. Evamāhāro ti sāli-maṃsodanâhāro vā pavatta-phala-bhojano vā. Evaṃsukhadukkha-paṭisaṃvedī ti anekappakārena kāyika-cetasikānaṃ sâmisa-nirāmisâdi-ppabhedānaṃ vā sukhadukkhānaṃ paṭisaṃvedī. Evamāyupariyanto ti evaṃ vassasata-parimāṇâyu-pariyanto vā caturāsīti-kappasatasahassâyu-pariyanto vā.

So tato cuto amutra udapādin ti so’haṃ tato bhavato yonito gatito viññāṇaṭṭhitito sattâvāsato sattanikāyato vā cuto puna amukasmiṃ nāma bhave yoniyā gatiyā viññāṇaṭṭhitiyā sattâvāse sattanikāye vā udapādiṃ. Tatrâp’āsin ti atha tatrâpi bhave yoniyā gatiyā viññāṇaṭṭhitiyā sattâvāse sattanikāye vā puna ahosiṃ. Evaṃnāmo ti ādi vuttanayam eva.

Therassa ca kucchivāto rujjhati19. So cintesi “ayaṃ yāgu mayhaṃ sappāyā, yāva na sītalā hoti, tāva naṃ pivāmī” ti. So manussehi ummāratthāya āhaṭe dārukhaṇḍe nisīditvā pivi. Itaro taṃ jigucchanto “atikhuddâbhibhūto mahallako, amhākaṃ lajjitabbakaṃ akāsī” ti āha. Thero gāme caritvā vihāraṃ gantvā daharabhikkhuṃ āha “atthi te, āvuso, imasmiṃ sāsane patiṭṭhā” ti? “Āma, bhante, sotāpanno ahan” ti. “Tena h’āvuso, uparimaggatthāya vāyāmaṃ mā akāsi, khīṇāsavo tayā upavadito” ti. So taṃ khamāpesi. Ten’assa taṃ kammaṃ pākatikaṃ ahosi.

Tasmā yo añño pi ariyaṃ upavadati, tena gantvā sace attanā vuḍḍhataro hoti, ukkuṭikaṃ nisīditvā “ahaṃ āyasmantaṃ idañ c’idañ ca avacaṃ, taṃ me khamāhī” ti khamāpetabbo. Sace navakataro hoti, vanditvā ukkuṭikaṃ nisīditvā añjaliṃ paggahetvā “ahaṃ, bhante, tumhe idañ c’idañ ca avacaṃ, taṃ me khamathā” ti khamāpetabbo. Sace disāpakkanto hoti, sayaṃ vā gantvā saddhivihārikâdike vā pesetvā khamāpetabbo.

Micchādiṭṭhito ca mahāsâvajjataraṃ nāma aññaṃ natthi. Yath’āha:
“Nâhaṃ, bhikkhave, aññaṃ ekadhammam pi samanupassāmi, yaṃ evaṃ mahāsâvajjaṃ, yathayidaṃ, bhikkhave, micchādiṭṭhi. Micchādiṭṭhiparamāni, bhikkhave, vajjānī” ti. (a. ni. 1.310)
